APPLY APPROPRIATE SEALANT/ADHESIVE

Learning Outcome # 1

Self check

Answer is called for: Please provide an answer sheet

1.What are sealant?

Sealant is a viscous material that changes state to become solid, once applied and is
used to prevent the penetration of air, gas, noise, dust, fire, smoke or liquid from one
location through a barrier into another.
2. What industry ,where sealant is commonly use?
For construction, automotive and aerospace
3. Give /enumerate at least 3 kind of sealant
Acoustic sealants, Car sealant, Engine sealant
4. What is an adhesive?
An adhesive, or glue is a mixture in a liquid or semi-liquid state that adheres or bonds
items together
5. What are the basic function of sealant?
1. It fills a gap between two or more substrates.
2. It forms a barrier through the physical properties of the sealant itself and by
adhesion to the substrate.
3. It maintains sealing properties for the expected lifetime,
service conditions and environments
Learning Outcome # 3

SELF CHECK

DISCUSS THE FOLLOWING; and provide your own answer sheet

1. Discuss the relevance of work values in the application of sealant/adhesives.

In addition to their bonding power, adhesives also offer protection and surface finish
stability. For instance, epoxy resins can be used on floors and countertops to provide a
highly durable and clean finish. On the other hand, sealants are often used as a product for
added durability, protection, and safety.

2. Why it is necessary to use appropriate sealant/adhesives in the workplace?

Just as a general rule, glues and adhesives contain toxic solvents. The chemical compounds
are poisonous, capable of causing skin and eye irritation, and some particularly harmful
adhesive formulations even cause respiratory difficulties.
3. Give the importance of sealant/adhesives
Sealants are materials used as a type of seal to prevent the passage of liquids through gaps
or joints or openings in various materials, such as tiles, bricks, and concrete.
4. What is the role of 5’s in applying sealant/adhesives
Sealants are widely used because of their capacity to fill gaps and voids, to be
insoluble, to resist corrosion and to be flexible in avoiding relative movement of
substrates. Compared to adhesives, they have lower strength, but they are more
flexible .
5. Is it necessary to observe OHS and environmental procedures and regulations.
Every business has safety risks that could impact employees if not managed efficiently.
These types of safety risks fall under the term occupational safety. Occupational safety
deals with all aspects of physical, mental and social health and safety in a workplace.

REFLECTION

The main difference between adhesives and sealants is that sealants typically
have lower strength and higher elongation than do adhesives. Since the main
objective of a sealant is to seal assemblies and joints, sealants need to have
sufficient adhesion to the substrates and resistance to environmental conditions
to remain bonded over the required life of the assembly. When sealants are used
between substrates having different thermal coefficients of expansion or
differing elongation under stress, they need to have adequate flexibility and
elongation. Sealants generally contain inert filler material and are usually
formulated with an elastomer to give the required flexibility and elongation.
They usually have a paste consistency to allow filling of gaps between substrates.
Low shrinkage after application is often required. Many adhesive technologies
can be formulated into sealants.
