Music in the subway.

It is a spring morning in London, and the start of another work day for Taiken Mikkola.

Together with millions of other people, the 18 year old Finn goes into the subway to start the days work.
But as soon as Mikkola is down at the subway platform he pulls out a trumpet, and is already at work.

It is hard work for both the feet and the dignity, but Mikkola’s mood does not seem to suffer. “London is
the best place.” He says, as he watches the faces of the passengers. One cannot earn money in the subways
of New York or Paris, but the Londoners’ attitude towards the young is kind. On a 10 hour work day,
Mikkola can earn as much as 30£. That idea is not Mikkola’s alone. To survive be able to each day buy a
little bread at the baker’s and some meat at the butcher’s, more than 500 young musicians play in the
subways of London. They play everything from the guitar to the harp. Mikkola, and many of these
foreigners spend the cold months of the year in the warmth of the subway.
But it is not enough to be able to sing and play. One must have an actor’s talent of looking innocent, if the
police officers should show up. Taiken Mikkola has decided to stay in Britain for 3 years, but doesn’t know
what he will do after that. That is the situation for many youths of today.

Due to unemployment they feel restless and without a future.
