THANKSGIVING DAY
During the religious upheavals of the 16th century, a body of men and
women called Puritans sought to reform the Established Church of
England from within. Essentially, they demanded that the rituals and
structures associated with Roman Catholicism be replaced by simpler
5 Protestant forms of faith and worship. Their reformist ideas, by destroying
the unity of the state church, threatened to divide the people and to
undermine royal authority.
In 1607 a small group of Separatists, a radical sect of Puritans,
departed for Leyden, Holland, where the Dutch granted them asylum.
10 However, the Calvinist Dutch restricted them mainly to low-paid laboring
jobs. Some members of the congregation grew dissatisfied with this
discrimination and resolved to emigrate to the New World.
This group of Puritans secured a land patent from the Virginia
Company. 101 men, women and children set out for Virginia on board the
15 Mayflower. A storm sent them far north and they landed in New England
on Cape Cod. Believing themselves outside the jurisdiction of any
organized government the men drafted a formal agreement to abide by
“Just and equal laws” drafted by leaders of their own choosing. This was
the Mayflower Compact. In December, l620, the Mayflower eventually
20 reached Plymouth harbor where the Pilgrims began to build their
settlement.
During the harsh winter that followed nearly half of the colonists died of
starvation and disease. Thanks to the Wampanoags, who taught them
how to grow maize, their first harvest was above all expectations. The
25 friendly Indians also taught them how to hunt for animals, soon giving
rise to a growing fur trade. In 1621 the Pilgrims of the Plymouth Colony
first celebrated Thanksgiving Day. Governor William Bradford decreed
that a day of feasting and expression of gratitude to the Lord be set
apart. The Wampanoags were invited for this first celebration. For the
30 feast the settlers provided wild turkey, geese, cod, lobster and bass, while
the Indians provided deer to be cooked over an open fire. Clam chowder
was cooked, Indian puddings were prepared. In addition, there were
dried fruits, berries, pumpkin and corn. The feast lasted three days but
the friendship between the colonists and the Indians was long-lasting.
35 The traditional Thanksgiving menu nowadays includes roast stuffed
turkey, chicken broth, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, celery, radishes,
squash, olives and pumpkin pie. Ironically, members of the Wampanoag
tribe have recently commemorated Thanksgiving as a fast day. They
claim that the United States has broken the promises made to their
40 ancestors.

President Lincoln, in 1863, established Thanksgiving as a national

holiday to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November.
Thanksgiving Day was observed rather irregularly before President
Lincoln’s act. In the early years, the feast was held only when the crops
45- and harvest had been plentiful. In 1941, Congress set Thanksgiving Day
as the fourth Thursday in November.
Thanksgiving continues to be a day set apart to thank the Lord for the
year’s blessings, an opportunity for families to get together for bountiful
dinners, a time to care for the needy - this ever growing contingent of
50- down-and-out, destitute people. In spite of everything Thanksgiving
remains the most truly American of the annual holidays today. (Excerpt

Be careful not to fall into these traps:

Grow should be followed by an adjective when it functions as a linking
verb (= to become)
O verbo grow deve ser seguido de um adjetivo quando funciona como
verbo de ligação.
Compare:
Incorrect: The child has grown quick in the last few years.
Correct: The child has grown quickly in the last few years.
Naturally the verb ‘grow’ can be followed by an adverb when it means

develop or increase in size. Other verbs used similarly in English.
