PHILIPPINE DRAMA
BRIEF HISTORY
PHILIPPINE TELEVISION
DRAMA
Drama is also known as “teleserye” which is derived from two Filipino words:
"tele", which is short for television and "sérye" means series.
• The teleserye has evolved into a genre with its own unique characteristics,
often working as a social realist reflection of Filipino reality.
• Teleseryes are aired in prime-time, afternoon, five days a week.
• They attract a broad audience crossing age and gender lines, and they
command the highest advertising rates in the Philippine television industry.
• The series last anywhere from three months to a year, or even longer,
depending on their rating.
1950s – 1980s
Soap operas in the Philippines originated when Gulong ng
Palad (Wheel of Fortune) was first heard on the radio in 1949.
The genre then expanded into television in the early 1960s. The first
Philippine TV soap opera was Hiwaga sa Bahay na Bato (Mystery at
the Stone House) in 1963, and was produced by ABS-CBN.
1990s
By the 1990s, a new wave of international television
phenomenon swept the Philippines, starting with the
'teleserye craze' over ABS-CBN imported Mexican dramas.
The most popular were the Las Tres Marias Trilogy
produced by the world-leading Televisa and starred
by Thalía.
2000s
Modern Philippine television dramas have begun to evolve to today's
modern form called teleserye, a portmanteau of the Filipino words
"telebisyon" ("television") and "serye" ("series").
The term originated from the ABS-CBN hit drama Pangako Sa 'Yo,
airing from 2000 to 2002 and starring Jericho Rosales and Kristine
Hermosa, and the iconic rivalry between actresses Eula Valdez as the
original Amor de Jesus-Powers and Jean Garcia as the original Claudia
Buenavista
The year 2008 also marked the international success of

breathing.
Alcohol is also described as a psychoactive drug. This means a drug that

POLITICAL SYSTEM IN
THE PHILIPPINE CULTURE
Election is a big deal for the
aspiring politicians and for the
people whose family has been
part of the political dynasty, but
nowadays people, especially
those who studied history and
politics, seems to care more
about the elections and the
system we have today.
HISTORY
From ancient times to
today’s time, Philippines has
a lot of history about the
political system, and this has
been a great part of the
Philippines’ culture.
PRE-SPANISH
ERA the Spaniards, we have the
Before
“barangay” system in the Philippines.
These barangays were different
districts in and out of every province.
Islamic sultanates were also evident in
the region of Mindanao. Barter trade
was also done in this era by the
different barangays, also they traded
with other races such as Vietnamese,
Chinese, and Brunei.
SPANISH
ERA
The coming of Ferdinand Magellan in the
Philippines have such a big impact in the political
system of the Philippines, in Mindanao region,
they started to conquer every place they can
starting from Cebu. As they continue to conquer
the island, things were changed. They started to
spread Christianism in the country simultaneously
changing the political system of the Philippines.
As soon as Ferdinand Magellan died, they
started to conquer the City of Manila, and they
victoriously did, then the Philippines was under
the Spanish rule.
Filipinos were not able to participate any of kind of elections,
because there were people who are mandated by the Spanish
Government to rule around country. The Philippines had a
representative in Spanish Cortes, which led to the continuously
appeals of the illustrados. And there, with these educated young
men of the Philippines came the consecutive rebellion and
Admiral George Dewey of the
United States started to conquer the
Manila, and defeated Spanish navy.
In 1898, there was a mock battle in
Manila where Americans won
against the Spaniards, and took
control of the whole city, then there
was Emilio Aguinaldo who
proclaimed the Philippine
Independence Day on June 12.
After the term of
former President
Aguinaldo, the
Americans gave
Filipinos limited time
for self-governance.
Philippine Organic Act
of 1902 was written
by Henry Cooper that
stated the end of
Philippine-American
War – this is also the
Philippine Assembly was addressed by William
Howard Taft, which then the start of the first lower
house of the Philippines in 1907. Later on,
Tydings-McDuffie Act was passed, and paved the
way for the Commonwealth of the Philippines
(Manuel L. Quezon as the President, former
Senate President of the Philippine Senate) in 1935
that states the Philippine Independence on July
04, 1946.
The invasion of Japanese in 1941,
delayed the independence granted by
the government of America due to the
World War II. The Commonwealth
government was forcedly exile, and the
Philippines gone through the Puppet
Government – the Second Republic of the
Philippine was established and led by
former President Jose P. Laurel, who
never approved of a war against
Americans. In 1944, the Americans
Jose P. Laurel reconquered the country, and upon
Quezon’s death, Osmeña took over and
restored the Commonwealth government.
Independent Era
Elpidio Quirino took over upon winning
the 1949 elections after the death of
Roxas. He was dethroned by Ramon
Magsaysay in 1953 elections because of
his corruption. He was followed by Carlos
P. Garcia who implemented “Filipino
First,” who was defeated by his Vice
President – Diosdado Macapagal in
1961. Ferdinand Marcos defeated
Macapagal in the 1965 elections.
Marcos was re-elected din
1969, and he declared
Martial Law in 1972,
because of the heightened
protests. In 1973, a
semi-presidential
government was approved.
Marcos still ruled when the
Interim Batasang
Pamabansa was elected in
1978.
Marcos continued the Martial Law not until 1981,
the opposition group boycotted the elections,
which made him easily won in 1981 elections.
The death of Benigno Aquino in
1983 made the opposition group to
grow larger. The opposition group
was not large enough to defeat
Marcos in 1984 parliamentary
election. The rampant growing of the
opposition group forced Marcos to
have a Snap election in 1986, which
he defeated Aquino’s spouse
Corazon, and that was the start of
the People Power Revolution. Aquino
was then proclaimed the new
president of the Philippines, and
POST-PEOPLE POWER ERA

All the problems caused by the People’s

Power Revolution was faced by Aquino. In
the 1992 elections, Aquino declined to run
and support Ramon Mitra, who is a Filipino
statesman, diplomat, and pro-democracy
activist, but Aquino withdrew and
supported Fidel V. Ramos instead. Ramos
won the 1992 elections, and he reinstated
the death penalty.
With a landslide victory, Joseph Estrada won the 1998 elections, but soon
impeached through the 2001 EDSA Revolution. In January 20, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo
sworn as the new President of the Philippines. Arroyo became the most unpopular
Philippine president because of a lot of issue such as tax increase.
In 2010, the son of the late first woman president, Benigno Aquino III, won the elections.
Aquino had rising oppositions because of the pork barrel scam. Aquino’s handpicked
successor Mar Roxas was defeated by Rodrigo Duterte in the 2016 elections, and as soon
as he proclaimed as the President, he declared war on drugs.
THE BRANCHES OF THE PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT

LEGISLATIVE
EXECUTIVE
JUDICIARY
LEGISLATIVE
The legislative power is vested in the Congress of the Philippines which consists of the Senate
of the Philippines and House of Representatives.

Senate of the Philippines House of Representatives

The district and sectoral representatives are elected
for a term of three years. They can be re-elected but
they may not run for a fourth consecutive term.
Senators are elected to a term of six years.
EXECUTIVE
The highest official is elected separately
from the President by popular vote. The Vice
President is first in line to succession if the
President resigns, is impeached or dies. The
Vice President is usually, though not always, a
member of the president's cabinet. If there is a
vacancy in the position of vice-president, the
President will appoint any member of
Congress (usually a party member) as the new
Vice President. The appointment must then be
validated by a three-fourths vote of the
Congress.
JUDICIARY
The judicial power is vested in the Supreme Court of the Philippines and lower courts
established by law. The Supreme Court, which has a Chief Justice as its head and 14
Associate Justices, occupies the highest tier of the judiciary. The justices serve until the age
of 70. The justices are appointed by the president on the recommendation of the Judicial and
Bar Council of the Philippines.
CAMPAIGN STYLES
OF POLITICIANS
1. PRINT ADS
2. DIGITAL ADS
3. CELEBRITIES
PRINT ADS
This is where they use
the print their names, and
faces, and give it to people
around town, such as
flyers, tarpaulin, and
sometimes, if they are rich
enough a billboard.
DIGITAL ADS
This style is more expensive than
the print ads, they use jiggle and
produce it online, and into the
television. This kind of campaign is
usually done by the politicians who
run for national elections, but reality
speaking, the used of different songs
without the permission of the Filipino
Society of Composers, Authors, and
Publishers, Inc. (FILSCAP) is rampant
in the Local Government elections.
CELEBRITIES
This campaign style can be used by someone who runs from local to national government,
either the politician is a good friend of the celebrity or the celebrity has been paid by the
politician to endorse him. This type of style is effective in the Philippines, because most of the
time Filipino based their votes through their idol’s endorsements.
