Grammar Spot
As you observe Georgian letters are written on the lines. Some of them are written above
the lines (17 letters). And some are written on the lines (16 letters; part of the letter is
above the line and part-below the lines).
Letters that are written above the lines are easier to pronounce. That’s why we will learn to
write them first. There are 17 letters that we write above the lines. The three vowels: ა, ი, ო
are among them.

Cases
There are seven cases in Georgian: Nominative, Ergative, Dative, Possessive, Instrumental,
Adverbial, and Vocative. This applies to nouns, adjectives and pronouns. Cases are used to
show what role a word plays in a sentence. Two cases in the English language common and
possessive appear in Georgian as well. The other five cases in Georgian are expressed by
means of prepositions in English.
Nominative Case
In Georgian all nouns in the Nominative Case end with a vowel: ი, ა, ე, ო, or უ.
Examples:
დირექტორი Director
მოხალისე Volunteer
You may have already noticed that Georgians put ი in the end of any foreign proper name
that ends in a consonant. That’s because they put them in Nominative Case.
Examples:
ჯონი John
სმიტი Smith
But: ევა Eva
Words in Nominative Case answer the questions: who? (ვინ? )and what? (რა?).
Example:
ვინ არის ის? ის არის მოხალისე
Who is he? He is a volunteer

Dative Case
As we already know, in Georgian all nouns end with a vowel: ი, ა, ე, ო, or უ. To form the
Dative Case we put ს, a Dative Case marker in the end of the noun.
If a noun ends in ი, the final letter is dropped and ს is added. The same rule applies to all
nouns in the plural form since they end in -ები.
Words in Dative Case answer the questions: ვის? (Who in Dative); რას? (What in
Dative).
ვის აქვს ფანქარი? Who has a pencil?

Plural nouns take demonstrative pronouns in singular form. Note that Inanimate nouns
take singular verbs and animate nouns take plural verbs:
If demonstrative pronouns stand as subject in the sentence, they take plural form.
Demonstrative pronouns which stand for inanimate nouns take a singular verb:
ეს ფანქრები შენი არის? არა, ესენი ჩემი არ არის.
Are these pencils yours? No, these are not mine.
(ესენი stands in plural because it is not followed by noun that is in plural)
Demonstrative pronouns that stand for animate nouns take a plural verb:

The Past Simple Tense
M System Verbs
The Past Simple Tense shows action that happened in past and is already
finished. There is not one universal pattern of forming the Past Simple Tense from the
Present simple tense for M System verbs; the verbs use different preverbs and they
don’t follow any rule.
With M System verbs the subject is in the Dative Case and the object in the
Nominative one. (as it is in the Present Simple Tense).
Note! Irregular M System verbs to have both (animate and inanimate) do not have the
Past Simple Tense forms. They use Past Progressive Tense forms instead.
მე მქონდა მე მყავდა
I had/I was having (inanimate) I had/I was having (inanimate)
