Background

A lot of accidents occur in the laboratory especially during practical sessions. This is mainly due to lack of knowledge on laboratory
safety. To minimize accidents learners must take precautions. Learners must know all the safety symbols as well as their meaning. This
will ensure safety when it comes to chemical use and storage.
Objectives
 Identify causes of accidents in the laboratory
 Discuss ways of minimizing laboratory accidents
 Identify safety symbols and meanings
 Draw each symbol and paste it on a manila paper.

BACKGROUND
A lot of accidents occur in the laboratory especially during practical sessions. This is mainly due to lack of knowledge on laboratory
safety. To minimize accidents learners must take precautions. Learners must know all the safety symbols as well as their meaning. This
will ensure safety when it comes to chemical use and storage. You are therefore required to design a flier with all safety symbols drawn
and explained.
The CALA has two separate parts A, and B.
Part A
You are required to identify causes of accidents in the laboratory and explain how they can be minimized. [5]
PART B
You are required to design a FLIER showing safety symbols for chemicals used and stored in the laboratory. For each symbol drawn you
state its meaning and give a brief explanation of its meaning. [20]
HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED
 To assess your presentation, your facilitator will consider your neatness in presentation, drawing skills and good explanation
for each safety symbol.
 Achievement standards specific to this CALA will be provided so that you are aware of the assessment criteria.
