Finances
Your tuition and fees remain the same, whether you are in Washington or Ann Arbor; however, we
estimate it costs a minimum of $5,000 in living expenses more to spend a semester in Washington than
in Ann Arbor. LSA Financial Aid recalculates your financial need, given the increase in living expenses.
Usually, your existing scholarships, loans and grants “come” with you to Washington. All students
admitted to the program receive a $1,000 scholarship, regardless of financial need. All other MIW
scholarship awards greater than $1,000 are based on financial need. Note: work study is not available in
Washington, nor will you have time to work at a part-time job. If you are admitted to the program and
have any concerns about money, please set up an appointment to talk to program administrator, Amber
Blomquist, akblomqu@umich.edu. Our goal is to make MIW an experience open to all students,
regardless of household income.

Housing
If you are admitted to the program, you will live in the University of California Washington Center at 1608
Rhode Island Ave., NW Washington, DC 20036, www.ucdc.edu. The UCDC website’s Res Life tab has
the answers to what the UCDC honor code is, what the apartments are like, etc. Please do not contact
UCDC. Your questions will be answered during the preparation course in Ann Arbor. Three or four
students share an apartment at UCDC and you will be given the opportunity to request your roommates.
No private apartments are available. If you are in MIW, you must live at UCDC.

Preparation Seminar
If you are admitted to MIW, you will take PoliSci 392, the MIW preparation seminar that meets the
semester before you go to Washington. This two-credit class will prepare you for searching for an
internship, living in Washington, and functioning well as an intern in a Washington office. You will
officially register for the during your semester in DC.

Classes
If admitted, you will enroll in:
PoliSci 392 Preparation Seminar (2 credits)
PoliSci 393.096 Inside Washington (1 credit)
PoliSci 398.096 Washington DC Internship (2 credits)
PoliSci 411 National Capital Research Seminar (4 credits)
PoliSci 492.096 Directed Studies (3 credits for your elective)
