The nitrogen generator system uses hollow fibre membranes which are fed by compressed
air.
The compressed air is forced through the membranes. The membranes are filled with
permeable hollow fibres. By using the differences in size and speed of molecules in the
compressed air, the molecules oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and other remaining
elements are separated from each other.
With the above described process the following gas flows are created:
1 Nitrogen gas with a pre-selected oxygen content ≤5% (cargo unload mode);
2 Nitrogen gas with a pre-selected oxygen content of ≤5% in atmosphere mode
and in case the generator is in start-up or stand-by and producing off-spec gas.
3 Waste gas, primarily consisting of oxygen, with a small percentage of argon,
carbon dioxide and small parts nitrogen.
The remaining percentage of oxygen in the produced nitrogen flow is primarily determined
by a pre-set system back pressure value. This back pressure value is generated by an
electric pneumatic operated membrane valve.
During the start-up of the system the membrane valve is completely opened. De position of
this valve is coordinated by the values measured at the oxygen analyser. The PLC controller
will combine the position of the membrane valve and the values measured at the oxygen
analyser. During a continues calculation process the membrane valve will reach a setting for
sufficient back pressure which will lead to a correct percentage of oxygen depending on the
selected mode.
The above described process is depending its stability on several external factors:
- Ambient temperature
- Temperature at suction side air compressor
- Cooling water supply
- Consumption of nitrogen
Practice has shown that the above factors can vary rather quickly and sudden. By making
use of high quality and accurate measuring systems and sensors, combined with a widely
programmed PLC system, a continues and stable production of nitrogen is guaranteed.
During the start up the produced gas, which is not yet according the percentages as
required, will be purged into the atmosphere (on deck , safe area).
A1_1_3A217008 Scope of Supply
During this start up the installation is completely shut off from the cargo and nitrogen system
by the double block and bleed valve arrangement on deck. Safety is guaranteed by using
several normally closed and normally open valves, in combination with a non return valve.
This also prevents the possibility for carbon gasses flowing back towards the nitrogen
generator.

From the moment a correct oxygen percentage is measured in the produced gas, the
system will change its valve settings, and will allow nitrogen to flow towards the cargo or
padding line, if selected.
The system is fitted in the described configuration with a local control panel, situated on the
nitrogen generator. This panel is of the touch screen model. The system can be monitored
and operated completely from this panel.
To protect the nitrogen generator and all the cargo systems attached to this generator
against high pressures, temperatures, oxygen levels and other unforeseen situations the
generator is fitted with the following main alarm monitor systems.
In case of an alarm this will be directly shown on the screen. In case the alarm is causing a
trip situation, the entire system will be shut down. On the screen an exact description of the
alarm will be shown.
When an alarm or trip occurs, the produced gas will be shut off from the cargo system, and
the produced gas will be purged into the atmosphere trough the purge line.
A1_1_3A217008 Scope of Supply
In cases that the alarm or trip is caused outside the feed air compressors, the compressors
will remain in standby on idle running.
