The Importance of Technology

The implementation of technology has benefited teachers and students in their teaching

and learning process. It has helped students build knowledge and progress as individuals.

Technology has allowed students to engage in their learning, collaborate with their peers, and

demonstrate their understanding.

There are a multitude of educational resources available with just a click of a button.

Many come in forms of games where kids earn points or rewards for their performance. This

makes learning exciting for students and engages them in their academic programs and learning.

With careful selection and monitoring, we as educators can select the most productive and

exciting educational resources for students. They are also learning how to use computers.

Technology is a very important tool, and it is essential that students understand how it works. In

addition, technology in education has helped increase collaboration. According to the article

How Important Is Technology in Education? Benefits, Challenges, and Impact on Students by

the School of Education, technology allows students to “work together and solve problems” and

in “collaborative activities, students can share their thoughts and ideas and support each other.”

With such devices, there are a multitude of assignments that allow students to work in groups

and can even make communication easier at school and from home. Technology in education

allows students to demonstrate their understanding. With educational resources, teachers are able

to evaluate the progress being made by students. It allows teachers to assess their students and

further plan their lessons.

Technology has made a lasting impact in the education of students of all ages. All in all,

it has benefited both teachers and students by allowing students to engage in their learning,

emphasize collaboration, and demonstrate their understanding.

Identification of Standards Summary

The Nevada Computer and Technology Standards and the ISTE standards, although

separate documents, share many similarities and differences. In terms of similarities, many of the

standards they share are very similar. An example of this is the second listed standard under 2.B

for grade 8 in the Comp Tech Standards. It states, “Create digital products in formats

appropriately targeted to specific audiences of purposes.” ISTE Standard 1.6d similarly has the

standard that “Students publish or present content that customizes the message and medium for

their intended audiences.” Although the standards are basically the same, the Comp Tech

Standard is intended to be met by grade 8. There are a multitude of similar standards. Both

documents have 4 sections for each standard starting from A and the last one being D. However,

the Comp Tech Standards have multiple subsections that correlate to what a student should meet

by a certain grade level. ISTE has a total of 7 standards listed while the Nevada Computer and

Technology Standards only have 6. Following the Nevada Computer and Technology Standards

affects instructional choices because they must create assignments that will guide students to the

mastery listed for their grade level. As for ISTE standards, teachers have a wide range of

standards that they can select from and improve on without a certain grade for mastery. This

gives the instructor more freedom and more options for creating assignments involving

technology. For section 4, I will be focusing on the first Comp Tech Standard: Creativity and

Innovation. This standard states, “Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge

and develop innovative products and processes using technology.” From this section, I will be

focusing on the sub section 1.B 2.1: “Create an original work using a variety of digital tools as a

mean of personal or group expression.”

Lesson Plan
Name of Lesson: Creating A Profile
Grade Level Appropriateness: 4
Technology Content Standard Addressed: Nevada Computer and Technology
Standards (1. Creative and Innovation, 1.A.8.1): Apply existing knowledge to
independently generate new ideas, products, or processes with digital tools.
Other Content Standard Addressed: Common Core Standards (Key Ideas and Details,
4.3): Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on
specific details in the text (e.g., a character’s thoughts, words, or actions).
Objective: Students will identify character traits and settings of a story and create a
profile that correctly describes their selected character along with where the story takes
place.
Materials needed to facilitate the lesson: Student Chromebooks, copy of teacher
selected story, Microsoft Word
Suggested group size: Individual
Procedures: Using a grade-level teacher selected book, teacher and students will read the
book as a whole class. After reading the book, the teacher will create 2 lists on the board.
One will be labeled “Characters” and the other will be labeled as “Settings”. Students
will raise their hands to share different characters and setting examples from the story for
the teacher to list on the board. After completing the list, students will individually use
their Chromebooks to create a profile for a character of their choice. They will include
personal descriptions of their character and will also include a well-written description of
where the character is from. At the end of this project, students will be sharing their
profiles with their table mates and will be given 2 minutes each to share.
Assessment: Students will be graded using a rubric that pertains to the lesson and
assignment. It will range from 0-5 and using these numbers, they will be graded on
whether they have reflected their understanding of the story and were able to properly
describe the characters and settings.
Story: The Summer I Turned Pretty

Character Name: Belly

Character Traits: Belly is full of energy, kind,

determined, and adventurous.

Examples from the text where character

exemplifies traits:
• Belly loves to swim. Her favorite time to swim
\
is at night.
\

• Belly worries for her friends and family.

• She is determined to finish things she started.
• Belly goes on adventures with friends
throughout the book.

Description of Character:
Belly starts off describing her yearly summers while
talking about the people she loves the most. This
shows how loving and kind Belly is for the people
she cares about. She spends a lot of time at the beach
either by herself or with her family and family
friends. She shows her adventurous side and in many
parts of the story, the reader can see Belly growing as
a character.

Selected Setting: Beach

Why this setting is important: Belly spends a lot of

time on the beach. In fact, the house where her, her
family, and her family friends stay at is a beach
house. When Belly doesn’t feel good or wants to do
something fun, she goes for a swim to the beach
since it is very close. Many events in the story occur
on the beach as well.
