Weatherford’s Liner Systems

Weatherford's Liner Systems are the industry

leaders in deepwater and ERD liner
installations worldwide. We continually
evaluate our tools and procedures to
ensure that what is needed in the customer's
well, however challenging, are not beyond
the limits of our tools.
The new Remote Control Top Drive
Cementing Head (RCTDH), for instance,
was developed for safety reasons. The
RCTDH allows the releasing of setting balls
and drillpipe darts to be accomplished
without personnel having to be hoisted into
the derrick to perform the task. Likewise,
the new Mechanically expanded (MX) ball
seat was developed to reduce the amount
of hydraulically actuated functions
downhole while setting the liner hanger and
releasing the running tools. The patented
Floating Junk Bonnet (FJB) is the industry
standard in liner top debris isolation
systems.
Additionally, WCS Liner Systems has the
only liner running tools that are rated to 1
million pounds at the liner top. These tools
have been used to set the long heavy liners
that are needed in deepwater applications.
Besides being on the cutting-edge of liner
technologies, Weatherford has a highly
experienced liner engineering group with
30 engineers who design tools that will be
needed as the major producing companies
move to more demanding environments
and deeper water. We also have some of
the most experienced liner hands in the
business, due to Weatherford acquisitions
of several liner hanger companies in the
past. Their knowledge has proved useful in
that we have different methods to address
problems and unique solutions to a variety
of challenges.

TSP Liner Top Packer

The Top Set Packer 'TSP' is Weatherford's premium integral liner top packer.
The TSP utilizes a one-piece mandrel and features a locking mechanism to
prevent premature setting in some sizes. The top end of the packer
incorporates the run-in profile and a high torque clutch mechanism that will
allow the operator to drill-down to reach a desired setting depth or to rotate
the liner after setting. The packing element is locked in the set position by a
set of external hold-down slips and internal body lock rings ensuring that the
packing element remains energized after setting and following pressure or
temperature reversals. The integral beam spring in most sizes provides an
internal force that helps maintain setting load on the C-Ring element under
dynamic loading conditions.

Features
! Locking mechanism helps prevent premature setting in most sizes

Application
The TSP proves useful on any liner job where it may be necessary to isolate
the annular gap between the O.D. of the liner and the I.D. of the accepting
casing. The TSP is run on 95% of Weatherford's liner hangers in the North
Sea and the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. Running a reliable liner top packer provides
insurance against expensive liner top squeezes.

CSPH Liner Top Packer

The Weatherford CSPH Compression-Set Liner-Top Packer is an economical
and easily operated liner-top packer for sealing the annular space between
the liner and the intermediate casing. The CSPH packer features multi-
element packer rubbers with anti-extrusion rings to protect the element during
run-in, as well as hold-down slips to prevent buoyant and/or frictional forces
from moving the liner up the hole. It can be set at any time during cementing
by picking up the setting tool and engaging the top of the tie-back sleeve with
the packer actuator. Compression of the packer elements requires a minimum
of 20,000 lb of force for nominal pressure performance.

Features
! Single element packer rubbers with anti-extrusion rings
! Hold-down slips to prevent the liner from moving up the hole
! Ecner-Array packing element system
! Internal ratchet rings keep element energized after packer is set

Benefits
! Design allows for running with a variety of running tools
! Requires extremely low set-down weight for proper activation
! Provides low-cost alternative to expensive liner-top squeezes

Application
! The CSP is useful on any liner-running job where it may be necessary to
isolate the annular gap between the OD of the liner and the ID of the
accepting casing.

TSP w/ Tieback Seal Mandrel,

Run as a 2nd Trip Isolation
Packer
The TSP is Weatherford's premium liner-top packer. The TSP can be run in conjunc-
tion with a Weatherford Tieback Seal Mandrel. When run this way, the Tieback Seal
Mandrel seals in the existing liner top, and the TSP isolates the annulus between the
liner and the casing string.
The TSP uses a one-piece mandrel and features a locking mechanism to prevent
premature setting in some sizes. The packing element is locked in the set position by
a set of external hold-down slips and internal body-lock rings to ensure that the
packing element remains energized after setting and following pressure or tempera-
ture reversals. In most sizes, the integral body spring provides an internal force that
helps maintain setting load on the C-ring element under dynamic loading conditions.

Features
h In most sizes, integral body spring provides an internal force that helps maintain
setting load on the C-ring element under dynamic loading conditions
h Packing element locks in the set position with a set of external hold-down slips and
internal body-lock rings
h One-piece mandrel
h Premium connections are standard

Benefits
hLocking mechanism prevents premature setting in most sizes
hPacking element system extremely resistant to swabbing effect
hProvides insurance against expensive liner-top squeezes

Applications

BSP Compression Set Liner

Packer
The BSP is a bottom trip liner top packer that is used as a second trip
isolation packer. Tieback seal stacks are run on the lower mandrel and are
utilized to seal off the existing liner top. The nitrile-packing element is
complemented by an external hold down and an internal set of body lock
rings. The BSP also incorporates a beam spring in the design. The beam
spring is loaded in compression when the packer is set and if the packer is
subjected to pressure or temperature fluctuations, the beam spring ensures
that the packing element remains energized.

Features
! Field proven nitrile packing element with high differential pressure rating
! Packing element fully protected by metal anti-extrusion rings
! One-piece mandrel

Benefits
! Low set down weight requirements for proper activation
! Can be used with any Weatherford running tool
! Special safety trip collet nose prevents premature setting of the packer
whole going the hole

Applications

TBSS Tie-back Seal Assembly

The Weatherford TBSS Tieback Seal Mandrel Assembly is used to tie back an
existing liner to some point higher up in the wellbore. Seal stacks that are
made from nitrile or molyglass are standard. The standard TBSS comes with
four seal stacks to ensure proper sealing. The guide shoe is built with a ¾
muleshoe (one-quarter of the bottom of the guide is removed) in order to
assist in entering the tieback receptacle in deviated wellbores. Lock rings on
either side support each seal stack individually so if a single seal support ring
fails, it will not affect any of the other seal stacks. A shear sleeve indicator
(SSI) can be ordered as an option on the TBSS. The SSI provides a great
advantage while attempting to space out tieback casing strings that will be
landed subsea. The SSI also acts as a centralizer when running the TBSS in
deviated wells.

Features
! Muleshoe guide ensures entrance into the tieback receptacle
! Lock rings on either side support each seal stack individually
! SSI assists in spaceout
! Available with round noseguide

Benefits
! The SSI provides a great advantage while attempting to space out tieback
casing strings that will be landed subsea.

Applications
! On the bottom of a casing tieback to give integrity to the liner that is tied
back
! On the bottom of a scab liner to sting an existing liner top so that the well
can provide pressure integrity over a given length above the existing liner
top
! Below a TSP Liner Top Packer to be run as a second-trip isolation packer

Liner Hangers

PHR Hydraulic-Set Rotating

Liner Hanger
The PHR Liner Hanger is Weatherford's premium rotating, hydraulic-set liner
hanger. The PHR has a one-piece mandrel and features nonwelded
construction. The slip design allows for reliable penetration of standard casing
grades up to Q-125. Because the cone section of the PHR is designed with
optimal longitudinal bypass slots and pocket-protected slips, it is the ideal
choice for drill-down situations where many formation cuttings must be
pumped past the liner top during cleanup and cementing operations.

Features
! Cylinder keyed to mandrel to eliminate seal wear caused by relative rotation
! Premium connections are standard
! Locking feature helps prevent presetting of slips
! Rugged design incorporates protected slips

Benefits
! Large bypass at the slips when set and unset
! Hydraulically activated; no pipe rotation is required for setting

Application
! Can be used to hang a liner at any depth (a seal system is required above
the liner hanger to build up the setting pressure)
! Especially useful in deep, highly deviated wells where rotation of the liner is
required to achieve a good cement job
! Can be run with an integral liner top packer, if desired, and can be run with
any type of Weatherford liner wiper-plug system

Liner Hangers

PMR Mechanical-Set Liner

Hanger
The PMR Liner Hanger is one of Weatherford's premium rotating, mechanical-
set liner hangers. The PMR uses a continuous mandrel and features a
nonwelded construction. The nitrided slip design allows reliable penetration
into standard grades of casing up to Q-125.

Features
! Standard with premium connections (Vam Top HT or New Vam)
! Large bypass at the slips when set and unset
! Solid one-piece mandrel with no potential leak path
! Rugged design that features well-protected slips
! Bearing for rotation

Benefits
! Nitrided slip design allows reliable penetration of standard casing grades
up to Q-125
! Auto re-jay feature allows for easy re-jay of the hanger, if required
! Can be rotated during cleanup and cementing operations

Application
! Can be used when liners will be run in relatively straight wellbores, and
when rotation of the liner is necessary during cleanup or in cementing
operations.
! Often, a mechanical-set hanger is preferred over a hydraulic-set hanger on
a production liner because the PMR does not have the setting port in the

Liner Hangers

PMX Mechanical Set

Liner Hanger
The PMX Liner Hanger is one of Weatherford's premium nonrotating, mechani-
cal-set liner hangers. The PMX uses a continuous mandrel and features a
nonwelded construction. The nitrided slip design allows for reliable penetration
into standard grades of casing up to Q-125.

Features
! Standard with premium connections (Vam Top HT or New Vam)
! Large bypass at the slips when set and unset
! Solid one-piece mandrel with no potential leak path
! Rugged design that features well-protected slips

Benefits
! Nitrided slip design allows for reliable penetration of standard casing grades
up to Q-125
! Auto re-jay feature allows for easy re-jay of the hanger, if required

Applications
! Can be used when liners will be run in relatively straight wellbores, and when
rotation of the liner is not necessary or practical during cleanup or in
cementing operations.
! Often, a mechanical-set hanger is preferred over a hydraulic-set hanger on a
production liner because the PMX does not have the setting port in the body
of the hanger.

Liner Hangers

SHR Hold-Down Sub

The Weatherford SHR Hold-Down Sub is used for “light” liners and in
applications where a positive indication of the setting tool release is required.
It is configured to function simultaneously with the PHS/PHR Liner Hanger
and acts as an anchor against forces that could potentially unset the liner
hanger. The SHR can be easily added to existing liner-hanger systems.

Features

! Can be used as an anchor point to give a positive indication that the setting
tool has released
! Can be unset by a predetermined overpull
! Counteracts buoyancy forces during cementation and frictional forces
when “stroking” the running string

Applications
The SHR is designed to be run in situations where any upward force caused
by buoyancy and frictional forces can unset the liner hanger.

Wiper Plugs and Darts

SWP Liner Wiper Plug with

Ball Seat
The SWP is Weatherford's premium single-liner cementing plug system. A
major advantage of the SWP is its integral ball seat used to activate hydraulic
liner hangers and running tools. When run in conjunction with outer joints
connected to the RSM pack-off, the SWP is never moved in the liner.
Typically, when an operator picks up to ensure release from a liner, the wiper
plug is pulled up hole, damaging the plug or prematurely releasing the plug
from the running-tool string. Using the RSM system with the SWP helps
prevent these problems.

Features
! High-strength design allows for high bump pressure
! Equipped with latch and anti-rotation device when mated with landing
collar
! Wiper plug is attached to the liner running tool with a set of positive-locking
dogs instead of brass shear screws

Benefits
! Reduces shock loading of the formation because the liner volume forms a
buffer in which the shear out pressure can dissipate
! Integral ball seat increases reliability of ball seating and reduces surge
! PDC-drillable

Applications
! When liners are run in highly deviated wells, it is often difficult to seat the
setting ball in the ball-seat in the landing collar. The SWP allows the ball
seat to be located close to the setting tool for improved seating ability.

Wiper Plugs and Darts

DWP Plug System with

Ball Seat
The Weatherford Dual-Wiper Plug (DWP) with Ball Seat is a liner wiper-plug
system for efficiently and accurately displacing well fluids and cement. An
integral ball seat allows a setting ball to be dropped to build up the pressure
required to set a hydraulic-set liner hanger. The dual-wiper plug system acts
as a mechanical barrier between mud and cement when a liner is being
cemented. The wiper plug in front of the cement column wipes or cleans the
inside of the casing before contact with cement, and the second plug cleans
behind the cement column. The wiper plug is held in a plug adapter at the
liner top until released by the dart. At the end of the displacement, the wiper
plug is bumped on a landing collar at the bottom of the liner. The integral ball
seat allows a setting ball to be dropped to the vicinity of the liner top instead
of to a ball seat near the bottom of the liner. This makes this system very
useful in highly deviated/horizontal applications.

Features
! Positive locking dogs prevent premature release
! Equipped with anti-rotation device that, when mated with landing collar,
prevents rotation during drill-out
! High-strength design allows for high bump pressure

Benefits
! Reduces shock loading of the formation because the liner volume acts as a
buffer in which the shear-out pressure can dissipate
! Integral ball seat located close to the setting tool increases reliability of ball
seating
! PDC drillable

Applications
! When liners are run in highly deviated wells, it is a great advantage if the
ball seat can be located close to the setting tool
! Liner wiper plugs are typically run during cement jobs for two reasons:
indication of cement displacement, and as a wiper and/or barrier at the
cement/displacing fluid interface. The pumping of a wiper plug ahead of the
cement and a second wiper plug behind the cement will often reduce
contamination at the leading edge of the cement.

Wiper Plugs and Darts

FLWP Full-Length Wiper

Plug System
Weatherford's FLWP Full-Length Wiper Plug System uses two darts released
from the surface to wipe both the drillpipe and smaller liner sizes without a
high degree of mechanical risk.
The system consists of four components. The two darts are designed to be
released from the Weatherford Top Drive Cementing Head (TDH) and dis-
placed to the end of the liner. The first dart acts as a physical barrier between
the fluids, and wipes the drillpipe and liner in front of the cement. The second
dart has a special sleeve mounted on its tail that latches and shears off in a
dedicated shearout sub usually located at the top of the liner running tools. As
the shear sleeve is behind the dart fins when the dart enters the shearout sub,
the fins do not “see” the pressure to shear off the sleeve. The shear sleeve
provides a positive surface indication that the drillpipe has been fully dis-
placed and allows a check on the displacement volume of the liner.

Features
! Darts have fins to wipe both the drillpipe and liner or casing
! Second dart has special sleeve mounted on the tail

Benefits
! Can also be used as a “one-dart” system
! Eliminates the need for standard liner wiper plugs on smaller liner sizes
! Unique shear sleeve on second dart gives surface indication that the
drillpipe has been fully displaced

Applications
! The FLWP system can be used on smaller liners where the ID of the
drillpipe is close to being the same ID as the casing being run. This allows
the FLWP darts to wipe both the drillpipe and the liner, eliminating the liner
wiper plug(s)

Landing Collars

Lite Landing Collar

Landing collars are run near the bottom of a liner in order to provide a landing
profile for the liner wiper plug. An important quality of this type of equipment is
drillability. Weatherford's Lite Landing Collar has been engineered with a
minimal volume of aluminum in order to reduce drillout times.
The Lite Landing Collar is run in conjunction with Weatherford's SWP or DWP
Liner Wiper Plugs. The landing profile is engineered to fit with the nose of the
liner wiper plug to provide a reliable bump. Also integral to the design of the
landing collar is the anti-rotation profile upon which the liner wiper plug lands,
preventing rotation while the plug is being drilled.
The modular design of the landing collar permits catcher sleeves to be run as
needed to protect the float equipment below. A catcher sub is typically run to
catch an expended ball seat or the core of the lead cementing plug of the
DWP Liner Wiper Plug.

Features
! Minimal volume of aluminum
! Modular design for catcher subs to protect float equipment
! Provides landing profile for plug bump
! Anti-rotation profile

Benefits
! Reduces drillout time
! No additional subs required
! No rotation while plug is being drilled

Applications
The Lite Landing Collar is placed at the top of the desired shoe track (typically
two joints from bottom and above all other float equipment), and is run in
conjunction with Weatherford's SWP or DWP Liner Wiper Plugs.

Running Tools

HNG Hydraulic Release

Running Tool
The Weatherford HNG Hydraulic-Release Running Tool is used to run rotating
liner hanger systems whenever hole geometry or poor hole conditions require
the liner string to be rotated under tension or compression. This running tool
will not release the liner hanger prematurely whether rotated to the right or
because of buildup of residual torque in the string. In effect, it allows the liner
to be rotated and pushed to bottom at the same time, or “drilled” into position.

Features
! Heavy-duty design for high load/torque limits allows operation with long, heavy
liners
! Primary hydraulic release from liner
! Emergency left-hand release
! Spring-loaded torque sleeve ensures positive engagement of the torque system
with the liner hanger when in tension or compression

Benefits
Allows for right-hand rotation while picking up or pushing the liner into the hole
Can be mechanically released, if necessary

Applications
The tool is designed for use in horizontal and deviated wells where it may be
necessary to work the liner to bottom with torque in both tension and compression.

The Weatherford Floating Junk Bonnet (FJB) is a patented liner-top protection
system that prevents junk, debris, or formation mud/cement solids from
entering the polished bore receptacle (PBR) during liner cementing. The FJB
is a sealed system that floats at the top of the PBR and stays in place until the
liner-setting tools are released and the running tools are retrieved.

Features
! Completely sealed system
! Equipped with blades for back-reaming debris or cement

Benefits
! Prevents debris from being sucked into the PBR, a common problem with
other debris-exclusion devices
! Provides sealed interface between liner equipment and running-tool string
! Increases reliability of packer actuator and running tool
! Remains inside the PBR, even when the string is raised to check for
release

Applications
! Cemented liners
! Unconsolidated formations, especially at higher deviations
! Sidetracked wells with accumulations of steel debris
! Holes with problems caused by mud solids and LCM fluids
! Well conditions that create liner-top debris
! Wells where it is difficult to retrieve running tools

Running Tools

RPA Rotating Packer

Actuator
The Weatherford Rotating Packer Actuator is run on the running tool string
any time a compression set liner packer is run integral to a liner hanger
assembly. It has the facility to be rotated while the setting weight is being
applied. This feature proves most advantageous in difficult well profiles where
sufficient drill-pipe weight is not available or where the weight has to be
“worked” down. The Actuator is located above the liner setting tool and
housed inside the PBR. The tool acts as a “No-Go” profile to which weight can
be applied to activate the setting mechanism of the Packer.

Features
! Solid body design ensures reliability in high-torque / high load applications.
! Axial Thrust Bearing permits rotation of the drill pipe while applying set
down weight to activate a liner packer

Benefits
! Rotation enhances weight transfer down hole, especially in deviated well
bores or where helical buckling is introduced

Applications
! The RPA Rotating Packer Actuator can be used any time a liner packer is
integrally run with the primary liner hanger system.
! When the TSP Packer is run with a Tieback Seal Mandrel as a second run
isolation packer

Running Tools

RSM Retrievable Cementing

Pack-off
The Weatherford RSM (Retrievable Seal Mandrel) pack off is a sealing sub
containing internal and external seals and is an optional part of the running
tool assembly. It is designed to fit into the profile located in the TSP Liner Top
Packer body that provides the seal bore for the external seals and the lock
profile for the dogs. The inner seals seal around a stinger run below the
setting tool. This is accomplished by the use of a pick up sub connected to
the bottom of the sealing stinger.

Features
! The pack-off is retrieved on the running-tool string to leave the liner ID
open to drift
! Incorporates jointed system to eliminate liner wiper-plug movement before
cementing
! Released by shifting the inner sleeve and shearing the shear screw
allowing the dogs to retract into the body.

Benefits
! Reduces the hydraulic lifting forces that affect the running-tool string during
cementing operations, especially when the wiper plug is bumped
! Eliminates need to drill out a pack-off on a subsequent trip into the well
! Because the slick joint is not directly connected to liner wiper plug, the liner
wiper plug does not have to be pulled backwards inside the liner when the
operator picks up to verify release of the running tool
! Saves rig time by eliminating the need to drill out an aluminum pack-off
bushing at the liner top

Applications
! The RSM pack-off is used as the liner top seal between the running string
and the liner. This allows pressure to be built up against a ball seat further
down the hole to set hydraulic type liner hangers. It also ensures that all
circulation of mud or cement is down through the bottom of the liner and
not around the bottom of the running string at the liner top. The liner wiper
plug system can be attached to the RSM pack-off by means of joints.

Running Tools

RCP Retrievable Cementing

Packoff
The Weatherford RCP Retrievable Cementing Pack-off is used to
provide a seal between the liner and the setting tool during cementing
operations, preventing contamination of the cement. After cementing is
completed and the bushing is ready to be retrieved, the setting tool is
picked up, a retrieving ring on the end of the polish joint disengages the
RCP from the releasing sleeve, and the entire assembly can be picked
up and pulled out of the hole, leaving no permanent seals to be drilled
out later.

Features
! External Poly-Pak seals
! Internal Chevron seals
! Locking dogs hold pack-off position until released

Benefits
! Entire assembly can be picked up and pulled out of the hole, leaving
no permanent seals to be drilled out later.

Applications
! The RCP Retrievable Cementing Pack-off is used to provide a seal
between the liner and the setting tool during cementing.

Running Tools

Mechanically Expanded (MX)

Ball Seat
The Weatherford Mechanically Expanded (MX) Ball Seat is a patent-pending
hydraulic liner-setting system that prevents the ball seat from being sheared
out before the liner hanger is set and released. Because the ball seat does
not open with pressure, there is no surge when the seat is opened. This gives
the option to pin the liner hanger to higher activation pressures than previ-
ously possible, or to apply a higher setting pressure to enhance slip-to-casing
engagement in challenging well conditions. The MX uses mechanical manipu-
lation of the running tools after the liner hanger is set to open the ball seat,
providing unrestricted drillpipe dart passage.

Features
! Ball seat is mechanically opened instead of being pressure-dependent
! Ability to set hydraulic liner hanger with higher pressure
! Pressure is bled off at surface before ball seat is opened
! Ball seat is located in liner running tools
! Ball seat opens to full running-tool ID
! Ball seat is retained in running tool
! Solid, steel ball-seat design
! Supported design provides impact resistance
! Seat can be opened fully, even without ball sealed off in it
! Large-bore ball seats available

Benefits
! Ball seat cannot prematurely shear out from pressure events
! Increased probability for setting hydraulic liner hangers in challenging well
conditions.
! No surge to formation when ball seat is opened
! No additional waiting and pumping for ball to reach seat in landing collar
! No restrictions or sharp edges for drillpipe darts to pass
! Setting ball can be reused to trip auto-fill float equipment
! No ball seat to drill up
! Ball seat will not shear out when impacted
! Improved erosion resistance
! Improved contingency options
! Decreased internal flow restriction during run-in possible

Running Tools

HD Cementing Manifold
The Weatherford HD Heavy-Duty Cementing Manifold is constructed with the
drillpipe plug retainer and swivel mechanism below the elevators. Fluid flow
through the manifold is directed either above or below the pumpdown plug by
external valves. With the upper valves closed and the lower valve open,
cement will bypass the plug until it is time to release the plug. To release the
pumpdown plug, which cleans the drillpipe of cement, the plug-retaining pin
must be retracted, then the upper valve opened and the lower valve closed.
This positive, three-step operation reduces the possibility of accidentally
releasing the pumpdown plug before the total cement volume has been
pumped. The HD manifold is fitted with a ball-dropping sub for use when a
hydraulic-set liner hanger is to be run. The ball is held in its retainer by the
retaining pin and can only be released by retracting the pin to open the port.

Features
! Positive, three-step operation
! Ball-dropping sub option for hydraulic-set liner hangers
! Heavy-duty swivel

Benefits
! Reduces the possibility of accidentally releasing the pumpdown plug
! Swivel permits easy manipulation of the workstring without having to break
down the cementing lines

Applications
! General-purpose manifold where rotation of the workstring may be required
! Good for cement jobs where reliable plug-release action is desired

Flag Indicator
The Weatherford Flag Indicator provides a visible indication that a plug has
been launched from the cementing head. The indicator is located at the
bottom of the cementing head assembly. After the drillpipe dart leaves the
cement head launcher, it passes through the flag indicator and shifts (rotates)
a pin, which in turn rotates the flag pin outside the body. This indication gives
immediate assurance that the drillpipe dart is moving downhole.

Features
! Uses standard drillpipe connections
! Can be reset and used for multiple plug latches during a cement job
! Mechanical properties such as burst, collapse, and tensile strength are
equal to or better than the workstring

Benefits
! Positive indication assures that a physical barrier exists between the
cement and displacement fluids.

Applications
! Use on any service job requiring the surface release of drillpipe darts.
