The kings in France ruled with absolute monarchy and didn’t believe in the need to consult their
people, thus creating riots.
Causes of the French revolution.
1. Bad harvest: old regime at France didn’t pay proper attention to the sufferings of
common people. Economic factors included hunger and malnutrition due to rising bread
prices. After several years of poor rain harvest, the poor had nothing to eat.
2. Bankruptcy: Another cause was France’s near bankruptcy as a result of many wars
fought by previous rulers & the French participation in the American revolutionary war.
The national debt amounted to almost 2 billion.
3. Unequal taxation: French society was divided and unequal. The nobility owned much of
the land but weren’t taxed; they forced people to work for them. Majority of the land
tax was paid by peasants.
4. The growing middle class: This class included lawyers, philosophers, traders,
businessmen and government officials, which was growing in size but had no say in the
government.
5. Freedom revolutionary fighters: Many of the soldiers who had gone off to fight in
America against British returned with the ideas of freedom and democracy.
