LESSON 4

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Photosynthesis is a process used by plants and other organisms to convert light energy into chemical
energy that can later be released to fuel the organisms' activities (energy transformation). This
chemical energy is stored in carbohydrate molecules, such as sugars, which are synthesized
from carbon dioxide and water

Photosynthesis capacity depends on intensity and wavelength of light.

2. PRACTICE
2.1. Plant material
Fresh leaves
Fresh Alga
2.2. Chemical
Solution Ba(OH)2
2.3. Experiments
2.3.1. Photosynthesis utilizes CO2
Prepare 2 bottles labeled 1 and 2.
Blow air into the 2 bottles and quickly cover by rubber caps.
+ Bottle 1: Inject 10 ml Ba(OH)2 solution. Shake gently.
+ Bottle 2: Inject 10 ml distilled water. Shake gently.
Observe phenomenon at the 2 bottles
Put into the 2nd bottle few fresh plant pieces. Repeat the blow in both two bottles and quickly cover
by rubber caps. Place both bottles under sun light for 90 mins. Then inject into each bottle 10 ml
Ba(OH)2 solution. Shake gently and observe the phenomenon.

2.3.2. Photosynthesis releases O2
- Cover an funnel on few fresh algal pieces cut by a blade in a
container. Cover the funnel by a tube containing water (see the
Figure).
- Place a system under sun light. Observe the phenomenon during 60
mins.

3. REPORT
Explain the phenomenons occurred at each experiment.
