Pb01: A three-phase two-pole winding is installed in six slots on a stator of synchronous
generator. There are 80 turns of wire in each slot of the windings. All coils in each
phase are connected in series, and the three phases are connected in . The flux per
pole in the machine is 0.060 Wb, and the speed of rotation of the magnetic
field is 3600 r/min. (a) What is the frequency of the voltage produced in this winding?
(b) What are the resulting phase and terminal voltages of this stator?
Pb02: A 480-V 200-kVA 0.8-power-factor-lagging 60-Hz two-pole Y-connected
synchronous generator has a synchronous reactance of 0.25 and an armature
resistance of 0.03 . At 60 Hz, its friction and windage losses are 6 kW, and its
core losses are 4 kW. The field circuit has a dc voltage of 200 V, and the
maximum IF is 10 A. The resistance of the field circuit is adjustable over the range
from 20 to 200 . The OCC of this generator is shown in Figure pb2.
(a) How much field current is required to make VT equal to 480 V when the generator is
running at no load? (b) What is the internal generated voltage of this machine at rated
conditions? (c) How much field current is required to make VT equal to 480 V when
the generator is running at rated conditions?(d) How much power and torque must the
generator’s prime mover be capable of supplying?

Pb 03: Assume that the field current of the synchronous generator in Problem 02 is adjusted
to achieve rated voltage (480 V) at full load conditions in each of the questions below.
(a) What is the efficiency of the generator at rated load? (b) What is the voltage
regulation of the generator if it is loaded to rated KVA with 0.8 PF lagging loads? (c)
What is the voltage regulation of the generator if it is loaded to rated KVA with 0.8 PF
leading loads? (d) What is the voltage regulation of the generator if it is loaded
to rated KVA with unity power factor loads?
pb04: A 3600 rpm, 60 Hz, 13.8 kV synchronous generator has a synchronous reactance of 20 . The
generator is operating at rated voltage and speed with the excitation dc voltage of 11.5kV and
the torque angle 15 .
1- Calculate (a) stator current, (b) power factor, and (c) total output power.

2- Determine (a) the maximum power that can be converted from mechanical to electrical form
without loss of synchronism if the field current is unchanged and (b) the value of current I a for
this condition.
pb05: A 500 MVA, 24 kV, 60 Hz three-phase alternator is operating at rated voltage and frequency
with a terminal power factor of 0.8 lagging. The leakage reactance X 0.15 and the
synchronous reactance X s 0.8 . Stator coil resistance is negligible. The excitation dc
voltage is 18kV. Determine (a) the torque angle , (b) the total output power, (c) the line
current I a , and (d) the resultant voltage EA.

Pb06: A three phase, round rotor synchronous generator is rated 150 MW, 0.85 power factor, 12.6KV,
60Hz, and 1800 rpm. Each winding has a line-to-neutral resistance of 1.535 m . The data for the no-
load

The short circuit armature current test gives a straight line through the origine and through
rated armature current at 700 Amps field current. (a)Determine the unsaturated synchronous
impedance per phase. (b) Determinethe saturated synchronous impedance per phase. (c) Draw
the phasor diagram and determine the voltage regulation for the condition of rated load and
0.85 pf lagging. (d) Repeat (c) for rated load and 0.85 pf leading. the saturation curve and the
short circuit test data are plotted in figure pb 6.

Pb 07: Assume that the field current of the generator in Problem 02 has been adjusted so that
it supplies rated voltage when loaded with rated current at unity power factor. (You may
ignore the effects of RA when answering these questions.)

(a) What is the torque angle of the generator when supplying rated current at unity
power factor? (b) What is the maximum power that this generator can deliver to a
unity power factor load when the field current is adjusted to the current value? (c)
When this generator is running at full load with unity power factor, how close
is it to the static stability limit of the machine?

Pb08: . A 75-kW, 3- , Y-connected, 50-Hz, 440-V cylindrical rotor synchronous motor


operates at rated condition with 0.8 p.f. leading. The motor efficiency excluding field and
stator losses, is 95% and XS = 2.5 . Calculate (a) mechanical power developed (b) armature
current (c) the internal voltage EA (d)power angle and (e) maximum or pull-out torque of the
motor.

Pb09: A 3-Phase synchronous machine is worked as follows: Generator - mode : 400 V/Ph,
32 A/Ph, Unity p.f. XS = 10 ohms. Motoring - mode : 400 V/Ph, 32 A/Ph, Unity p.f. , XS = 10
ohms. Calculate; E and in both the cases.

Pb10. A 3-phase, 6,600 volts, 50 Hz, star-connected synchronous motor takes 50 A current.
The resistance and synchronous reactance per phase are 1 ohm and 20 ohm respectively. Find
the power supplied to the motor and induced emf for a power factor of (a) 0.8 lagging and (b)
0.8 leading.

Pb11:A three-phase, Y-connected load takes 50 A current at 0.707 lagging power factor at
220 V between the lines. A three-phase Y-connected round-rotor synchronous motor, having
a synchronous reactance of 1.27 ohm per phase, is connected in parallel with the load. The
power developed by the motor is 33 kW at a power angle of 30°. Neglecting the armature
resistance, calculate (a) the reactive kVA of the motor, and (b) the overall power factor of the
motor and the load.
Pb12: A 2300-V, three-phase synchronous motor driving a pump is provided with a line
ammeter and a field rheostat. When the rheostat is adjusted so that the a-c line current is a
minimum, the ammeter reads 8.8A. Approximately what horsepower is being delivered to the
pump? How should the rheostat be adjusted so that the motor is operating at 0.8 power-factor
(b) leading? How many kVARs is the motor supplying to the system at 0.8 power factor
leading?

Pb 13: A 208-V, 45-kVA, 0.8-PF-leading, a -connected, 60-Hz synchronous machine has a


synchronous reactance of 2.5 and a negligible armature resistance. Its friction and
windage losses are 1.5 kW, and its core losses are 1.0 kW. Initially, the shaft is supplying a
15-hp load, and the motor's power factor is 0.8 leading.
(a) Sketch the phasor diagram of this motor, and find the values of IA, IL and EA.
(b) Assume that the shaft load is now increased to 30 hp. Sketch the behavior of the
phasor diagram in response to this change.
(c) Find IA, IL and EA. after the load change. What is the new motor power factor ?

Pb14: The 208-V, 45-kVA, 0.8-PF-Ieading, -connected, 60-Hz synchronous motor of the Pb
06 is supplying a 15-hp load with an initial power factor of 0.85 PF lagging. The field
current IF at these conditions is 4.0 A.
(a) Sketch the initial phasor diagram of this motor, and find the values IA and EA.
(b) If the motor's flux is increased by 25 percent, sketch the new phasor diagram of the
motor. What are EA, lA, and the power factor of the motor now?
(c) Assume that the flux in the motor varies linearly with the field current IF. Make a plot of
IA versus IF for the synchronous motor with a 15-hp load.
