Chapter 6 : “SAFETY AND FIRST AID”

The immediate help given to a sick or an injured person
before taking him/her to the doctor is called first aid.
POISON CHEMICAL NAPHTHALENE BALLS LIZOL

1. Wear only cotton clothes in the kitchen as synthetic clothes catch fire easily.
2. Never play with matchsticks.
3. Use a lighter instead of matchsticks to light the gas stove.
4. Do not keep kerosene, diesel, petrol or other such substances in the kitchen.
These substances catch fire easily.
5. Regularly check and repair all your electrical appliances especially in the kitchen.
6. Switch off the knob the cylinder when not in use especially at night.
7. In case of leakage open the doors and windows of the kitchen and do not touch
any electrical appliance.
STOP The victim should not run as running can increase the fire
due to increase in oxygen supply.

DROP The victim should drop on the ground and cover his/her face
with the hands to prevent injury to the face.

The victim should roll on the ground to try and extinguish

the fire. Cover him/her with a blanket or some other thick
cloth. This would cut off the air supply and the fire would
extinguish.
 The fire can be extinguished
by using fire extinguisher.
 Fire extinguisher is a device

containing water or certain other substances


that can be used for putting out fire.
Cuts and wounds provide an easy way for germs to enter in our body. So,
do not ignore them.

• MINOR CUTS: 1) If the cut is small, rinse it with cold water.


• 2) Clean the cut with the cotton dipped in an antiseptic solution to remove germs.

• 3) If the cut is made by a rusted object, an anti –tetanus injection may be needed.
1. To stop the bleeding in case of deep cuts, take some cotton wool or
make a thick pad of sterile gauze and press on the wound.
2. Then, tie it tightly with a bandage.
3. Raise the injured body part to stop the bleeding.
4. Take the injured person to a doctor.
