session. The examination will be recorded. Recordings are sent to Anglia
Examinations, Chichester College for moderation.

AFTER the examination, you must not return to the area where candidates yet
to take the test are still waiting.

Preparation

Think about your future plans and be prepared to talk about them and answer
questions about them. Be prepared to ask the other candidate questions
about his/her future plans as well.

There are two articles to read and think about. You should be prepared to
talk briefly on one of them before discussing it.

Choose two of the topics from the list: food; travel and holidays; transport.
The assessor will ask you a question on one of the topics or ask you to talk
about a statement on that topic.

Task One: up to 4 minutes: Introductory warm-up.

The assessor will ask you to talk about yourself and why you are taking the
examination.

Task Two: up to 8 minutes: Prepared discussion (newspaper article).

The assessor will ask you to talk briefly about the article you have prepared
and then you must be prepared to discuss it.

Task Three: up to 8 minutes: Unprepared discussion (topic only).

The assessor will offer you two topics to talk about, from the list of three
preparation topics that you have already seen. The assessor will ask which
topic you have chosen to talk about. The assessor will then ask you a
question/questions on that topic. You must be prepared to engage in a
discussion about the topic.
LEVEL 2 (PROFICIENCY) SPEAKING EXAMINATION, Set 1 2021

Task Two: Readings for Discussion

READING ONE: FROM EXAMS….. TO FROGS

2020 was a tough year for many school goers, with uncertainty surrounding whether
exams such as A-levels in the UK would take place at all due to the pandemic. During
this period of indecision, however, rather than sit around playing Xbox or trying to
achieve ‘likes’ on social media, two 17-year-olds from Staffordshire in England have
focused their attention on a very different enterprise. Their mission is to restore
reptile and amphibian species which are either endangered or extinct in the country.
Harvey Tweats and Tom Whitehurst plan to open the country’s largest outdoor
breeding facility for reptiles and amphibians, hoping to restore lost species of frogs
and lizards to ponds and wetlands around the UK.

This is more than just a pipe dream of two youngsters hoping to change the world.
They are knowledgeable and passionate, and have already secured financial support
from several leading environmentalists, including Ben Goldsmith, brother of Zac
Goldsmith, Minister of the Environment. They also have the support of influential
individuals such as Derek Gow, who masterminded the reintroduction of the beaver
into the waterways of Britain. They have sponsorship from their YouTube channel and
have appeared on TV several times.
Now that the government has decided that A-level exams will not take place in 2021,
Harvey and Tom can stop agonising over exams and focus on their passion. ‘We’ve got
a lot of work to get on with, so it kind of works in our favour,’ says Tom.

Points to consider:

 Is it worthwhile trying to reintroduce species to an area where they were

previously extinct?
 What particular animal species are under threat in your country and should
more be done to protect them?
 In what ways do you think the Covid-19 pandemic could have a positive
impact on the environment?
 What is the best way of assessing a student’s ability - exams or coursework?
 How could young people become more involved in conservation and caring
for the environment?
LEVEL 2 (PROFICIENCY) SPEAKING EXAMINATION, Set 1 2021

Task Two: Readings for Discussion

READING TWO: ‘THE LINE’ ECO CITY

Saudi Arabia has announced plans to build a zero-carbon city as part of its futuristic
development project. The city will take the form of a 105-mile–long straight line. This
length is equal to around 170 kilometres and it will run along the Red Sea coast.
Appropriately, it will be called ‘The Line’ and it will be made up of three layers. On the
surface will be the pedestrian layer, with paths and green spaces. Below that will be an
invisible layer of infrastructure, providing services such as schools, clinics and hospitals,
leisure and retail facilities. Below that will be the transport layer, intended for freight
transport and high-speed transit, allowing a commuter to travel the entire 105-mile
distance in no more than 20 minutes.
‘The Line’ promises to have no cars, no streets and zero carbon emissions, powered by
100% clean energy. The project was originally announced in 2017 as part of a plan to rid
Saudi Arabia of its reliance on the revenue from crude oil, and allow it to diversify. The
project is predicted to create 380,000 jobs, but will also rely heavily on artificial
intelligence. This AI will work continuously to help find ways to make life comfortable and
easier for those that live there. Construction of ‘The Line’, scheduled to start in 2021, is
expected to cost between $100 - $200 billion. By 2020, it will be home to one million
residents, and aims to preserve 95% of the existing nature along its length.

Points to consider:

 What is your opinion on a place like this and would you like to live there?

 How important is history in terms of where you live?

 In what ways do you think that AI (artificial intelligence) will play a role in
our day-to-day lives in the future?

 Overall, do you think this will be good or bad for the environment?

 In your opinion, how could the government in your country improve the town
or area where you live?
