However, in the event of complete loss of hydraulic pressure, elec-

valve, the springs extend and set the brake.
Not only do they act when pressure is lost unexpectedly, but they
may also serve as a parking brake when the rig is idle for extended
periods or while undergoing maintenance.
A crown protection device can be installed in the system, which
when tripped, activates the calipers.

SHEAVES
All National Oilwell sheaves feature our unique Bearing Retention
System, a simple but effective method of preventing a sheave from
“walking” off the bearing. The system consists of snap rings which
are inserted into grooves machined into the bore of the sheave, one
on each side of the bearing cup. A thinner version of a standard
seal completes the system.
• API #8C.
• DnV approved for UKDOE, NMD and NPD requirements.
• Fabricated from top quality materials.
• Full penetration welds at hubs.
• Rims compression fit to webs before welding.
• All welds fully inspected.
• Stress relieved after welding.
• Grooves hardened to Rockwell C35.
• National Oilwell bearing retention system.
• Three coat epoxy paint system.
• Common sizes stocked.

Faster Penetration Rates (due to allowing higher RPM).
Reduced Well Costs Overall. IMPROVING THE PROCESS
In conventional packing arrangements, each seal does all of the
work on its own until it fails. The work effort is then transferred over
to the next seal. In the hydrodynamic packing box, each seal is
doing an equal share of the work from the very beginning, resulting
in a longer lasting seal.
The Hydrodynamic Washpipe System reduces the pressure drop
across the wash pipe seals by pumping pressurized oil into the
cavity behind the seal. The pressure on the back side of the seal is
actually higher than the pressure on the drilling fluid side of the
seal. The seal itself is designed to "float" on the oil, much as a car's
tires will hydroplane on a wet road. The result is a slight amount of
oil seeping underneath the seal and ensuring that drilling fluid does
not come into contact with and degrade the seal itself. The service
life of the wash pipe packing is actually extended by the judicious
application of a "leak".

Triplex Mud Pumps
HIGH PRESSURE MODULES TO 7,500 PSI.
Also available for the 12-P-160 and 14-P-220 mud pumps are high-
pressure modules. These are designed for working pressures up to
7,500 psi (527.4 kg/cm2). The 12-P-160 modules have smaller
internal bores than the standard or premium modules in order to
withstand the higher pressures. The bores for both the 12-P-160
and 14-P-220 high pressure modules, along with premium modules,
are autofrettaged to provide improved fatigue life at the higher pres-
sures.

SLANTHOLE SERVICING RIG
The slant-hole service rig design emphasizes reduced rig-up time
and a capability to function equally well in a vertical position.
The rig incorporates forward and backward, as well as side to side
adjustment to ensure proper mast alignment. Through the use of
hydraulics, the mast can be positioned perfectly over the wellbore at
whatever angle is required.
In the conventional mode, the mast rests on the back of the carrier
in the vertical mode giving stability and improved wellhead
clearance.

THE VERTICAL STARRACKER DUAL
This pipe racking system extends the operating and flexibility to
include racking of any size drill pipe and collars, in stands of triples
or quads, and casing up to 13 3/8 inch stands of doubles.
This Dual version has one set of arms and claws for pipe / collars,
and one set of arms and claws specific for casing. This allows
both independent set of operations to be specifically designed for
the purpose, and allows for unique operating performance and
alternatives. The concept builds on the same principle as our
standard vertical racking system, but the main column has a
unique design which allows the pipe arms and casting arms to
pass each other.
The unique slim multifunction gripping claws, allow full access to all
fingers, and depths of entrance, even if the fingers on either side
are full.

Horizontal Pipe Deck Conveyor
Horizontal Pipe Shuttle
The Horizontal Pipe Deck Conveyor with stabbing support, extends
the operation of traditional horizontal pipe handling to a complete
operation which includes guidance of the pipe when lifting, and
accurate stabbing support of the pipe over mouse hole or well
center. The same mechanism supports the opposite operation
when laying down pipe.
The machine consists of a traditional pipe conveyor, equipped with
a telescopic tail - in/out, and stabbing support arm. The arm is
synchronized with the belt speed, and provides highly improved
operating performance to the horizontal pipe handling / guiding and
stabbing process.
The pipe deck conveyor is equipped with a feeding table for
simplifying loading and unloading with a pipe deck crane, and to
allow faster operating speed. Underneath the conveyor belt are
four solid rubber dampers, which prevent belt damage caused by
tool joints, pipe threads or other sharp edges, or heavy loaded
points.

The Horizontal Pipe Shuttle transfers drill pipe, collars and casing
between the pipe deck and the drill floor, and is especially suited
for applications with major elevations between the pipe deck and
the drill floor.
The machine consists of a horizontally slanted section, with a trol-
ley running on top. The trolley is equipped with a pushing device in
the rear end, and a set of hydraulic operated support arms in the
front section to secure the pipe in the trolley.
When fed with pipe on the pipe deck, the trolley climbs the slanted
section, and with the pushing device, the pipe is delivered to the
elevator pick-up position. All sections of this pipe shuttle are made
for harsh marine environmental and operational conditions.

500-600 HB range. This alloy has 9 times the wear resistance of
cast iron.
The Vertical Magnum has its primary use anywhere that space is a
premium. The footprint is approximately 30% of that required by the
same horizontally mounted pump. The applications are identical to
the rest of the Magnum family with the added advantage of the
small installation space requirement.

Magnum offers the right pump for the application. The Magnum
family of pumps offer optimum pressures and slurry handling
capacities at low operating speeds.
The extra thickness built into the Magnum reduces the effect of
wear and cavitation on fluid end components. The wide full open
impeller design allows for maximum solid handling capability while
minimizing bearing thrust loads.
The Magnum large shaft design allows for pumping of high Specific

tools and motors in either workshop or drillsite locations.
The basic machine consists of a bed complete with a fixed head-
stock chuck, a moveable tailstock chuck that applies the torque, and
a hydraulic console unit.
TORQUE
The torque is produced by two hydraulic cylinders which rotate the
tailstock chuck through a 30 degree arc. Breakout torque is greater
than make-up torque at the same operating pressure due to the
differential areas of the rod and head sides of the pistons.
The Torquemaster requires no anchors or special mounting facilities
since the torsional reactions are resisted by the base frame.
