ArchAeology
Archaeology is the study of past human societies through the physical evidence they have left behind. Like CSI detectives of the past we investigate important developments in the human story over millions of years. By taking Archaeology in UCC you can combine an intellectually stimulating subject with a professional career qualification. Archaeologists in Ireland work for the National Monuments Service and the National Museum, as well as for local authorities, county museums and planning offices. Commercial archaeologists work with builders and development agencies, carrying out surveys and excavation, environmental impact assessments, as well as heritage conservation projects and tourism initiatives.

english
Studying English in UCC can mean anything from learning to appreciate the structure of medieval poetry to analysing the ways in which horror films work. We cover texts from the very earliest days of the written word in English to the most contemporary authors across the English-language cultures of the globe. Having studied English, youll look at the world differently, with a much richer understanding of how culture operates in society.Youll also have highly developed skills of interpretation, analysis and communication that transfer to a very wide range of careers and professions, including print, web and broadcast journalism, public relations, marketing and publishing.

Students who study French, German, Italian or Spanish with European Studies in first year, have the option of spending third year studying European Studies at a University in the country of their chosen language.

celtic civilisAtion
Do you want to learn how to lay waste to 150 warriors with a single blow? Then tales from the Celtic past about the mighty deeds of heroes, beautiful goddesses and mysterious druids might be for you. The Celtic Civilisation programme opens up to students a rich world of myth, legend, art, poetry, history and tradition. Speakers of Celtic languages once occupied territories extending all the way from Ireland to what is now Turkey, and were famous for the reckless bravery of their warriors, the mysterious teachings of their druid priesthood and for the magnificence of their precious ornaments.

Graduate Profile: Connie Kelleher graduated from UCC in 1998 with an MA degree in underwater archaeology. She is now employed in the Underwater Archaeology Unit of the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.

chinese studies
Taking Chinese Studies will open up a whole range of new and exciting possibilities for you and other UCC graduates as you prepare to enter a world in which the role of China is of ever-increasing importance. Despite comprising one fifth of the worlds population, few in Ireland know much about China, and even fewer understand it. Chinese Studies at UCC offers you the opportunity to gain such an understanding of China, alongside and through the study of the worlds most widely spoken language Mandarin Chinese. Studying Chinese will distinguish you from the pack as someone who knows whos Hu!

gAeilge/ irish
A student who chooses Gaeilge/Irish as part of their Arts degree programme can expect to enjoy a unique cultural enrichment. As well as acquiring the oral and written communication skills which are an essential part of a university language course, the student of Gaeilge/ Irish develops informed opinions on Irish life and civilisation through an acquaintance with the various sources of information on our heritage and familiarity with Irish literature from early times to the present.

history oF Art
We live in a very visual world. Studying History of Art will help you to understand the complexities of this world, and will help provide you with those visual and written skills that open a number of career opportunities in areas such as web design, fashion, advertising, the media, journalism and the arts and culture industry. Graduates of History of Art from UCC have gone on to pursue a number of careers in Ireland and abroad. We currently have graduates working in London, New York and Shanghai.

philosophy
Philosophy involves asking, and attempting to answer some of lifes biggest questions, what is morally right or wrong? Do we have free will? How should societies be organised? Is there a God? What makes good or bad reasoning, and how can we identify it? Philosophy encourages the ability to appreciate and evaluate different points of viewboth personal and cultural through questioning, discussion and careful analysis. The skills that philosophy teaches (critical thinking, clear analytic writing, creative problem solving, research and project management) are highly valued, wonderfully transferable, and open the door to a wide range of professions in the arts, law, politics, teaching, journalism and business.

Sociology focuses on Society as a whole. How did Society come about? What challenges does it face? Why do the same crises come up again and again? Sociology will help you to become a better informed citizen and participant in social and political life.You will develop a grounded and informed view on the most pressing issues in contemporary social life.

The study of Greek and Roman Civilisation involves the study of the art, history, and literature of the dominant cultures of the Mediterranean Basin and Near East for about one thousand years from the reign of Alexander the Great to the rise of Islam. It transcends national boundaries and introduces students to the shared cultures and histories of a vast region. Hence it forms an ideal part of the preparation for careers from the tourist industry to the diplomatic service, as well as supplementing the professional knowledge of those pursuing careers in areas such as archaeology or museum conservation.

Forever associated with its natural and architectural beauties, the birthplace of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Dante, Machiavelli, Italy is today one of the G8 countries, and an important market for Irish Exports. Italian at UCC offers intensive language tuition to both beginners and non-beginners, and a wide range of courses in literature, cinema and culture - with the possibility of spending one year studying in Italy.

Why was Ireland once the shining light of Europe? Can we regain this position once more? By taking Economics in the BA degree, you will have the opportunity to learn about, research and debate important issues that will affect you in every aspect of your life, whether at work, in business or as members of society. As the only business subject in the BA, Economics will provide you with an excellent education and transferable skills that will prepare you for starting a career in finance, business, government, media, consultancy and teaching. Spanish is one of the worlds most important global languages with an estimated 350 million speakers worldwide. With an ever growing proliferation of speakers in the USA, as well as Mexico, Spain, Colombia, Argentina, Peru and elsewhere, speaking Spanish opens up a vast new world of vibrant cultures that can be seen in many walks of life including music, fashion and sports, not to mention cinema, literature and the arts. Eva Mendes, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Lpez, Shakira and Christina Aguilera are among the many famous faces of the Latino world and studying Spanish can lead to exciting job opportunities in business, tourism, education and media. geogrAphy
In Geography we study the relationships between people, places and environments. As the world is transforming and we face new social, political, cultural and environmental challenges, Geography will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to understand the impacts on the spaces, places and environments in which we live. Our interests include climate change, social and economic inequalities, transformation of urban spaces, the emergence of global economies and population movements. The knowledge and skills gained from studying Geography at UCC are valued by employers and can provide a springboard into careers such as environmental management, urban and regional planning, community development, tourism and heritage planning and education.

Graduate Profile: Fiona Shaw who you may know from the movies as Harry Potters aunt is a graduate of philosophy in UCC. She is a leading theatre director and actress, and was awarded an honorary CBE in 2001.

politics
Politics is not just for politicians! Are you interested in Irish politics, international affairs, human rights, the allocation of power and resources? Then Politics is the subject for you. Politics in UCC is taught by the Departments of History, Philosophy and Government and so we are able to offer students a broad and diverse range of topics to study, from political corruption, war and political extremism to democracy, feminism and comparative politics with lots in between. Politics allows you to study the real world and helps develop skills that make sense of that world long after graduation.

Are you confident that the Great Liberator was Daniel OConnell and not Daniel ODonnell? Did you know that the original Red Army was not a group of Manchester United supporters and that the Blueshirts did not refer to the Chelsea football team? The study of history at UCC will not only dispel the myth that the Great Dictator was not alluding to your mother but will also train you to gather and to interpret information and to interrogate diverse points of view. History prepares you for a number of career paths by the variety of topics in history offered to students, for example social and economic history, political ideologies, modern diplomacy, history of law, media, art, women, government and many more. Former graduates have pursued careers in politics (Michel Martin TD); in journalism, (Helen Callanan, former editor of The Sunday Tribune) and in professions as varied as film historians, copy-editors, teachers, and entrepreneurs. Folklore
Ever wondered what people did for entertainment before television and computers? Folklore is the study of informal, unofficial, ancestral, indigenous or alternative knowledge or ways of knowing and experiencing the world. It refers to the study of ordinary and everyday life from birth to death, and from death to beyond in both the past and the present.

mAthemAtics
Mathematics is not only a powerful and versatile tool for solving practical problems but a highly creative field of study too, combining logic and precision with intuition and imagination. There are three subjects on offer with Mathematics: Applied Mathematics, Mathematics (both of which require at least a HB3 in Mathematics in the Leaving Certificate) and Mathematical Studies (which requires at least an OB3 in Mathematics in the Leaving Certificate). For students who are considering teaching, then Mathematical Studies is the one to choose. Mathematicians are readily employed in areas such as banking, economic forecasting and risk analysis.

studies in psychology
Psychology is the study of people; how they think, how they act, react and interact. It is concerned with all aspects of behaviour and thoughts, feelings and motivations. We study what connects such physical and mental activity. Studies in Psychology is a broad, general introduction to some of the main areas of study in Psychology. It is available in First Arts and then only as a minor subject in second and third year.

French
For centuries, French has been an important world language and one of the two main working languages of the European Union. French culture is renowned for cinema, music, literature and for its day-to-day living. In UCC, you will be able to find out about this culture, its history, books, films, philosophy and language. If you are curious about examining and understanding the world around you then CK102 could be for you. The BSocSc degree helps students develop critical perspectives on issues such as: the future of society in a globalised world; poverty; social work and the social services; social justice and human rights; youth policy; community development; culture and identity; young people and youth culture; social exclusion; the environment, sustainable development and planetary citizenship. Teaching and learning are interactive, involving small group project work, field visits and placements in a variety of work settings and agencies. Social Science graduates are highly valued employees because of their knowledge of people and society.

ck106: Applied psychology


Psychology is a broad discipline which is relevant to every area of human life. It is a research-based discipline, which increases our knowledge of such diverse topics as mental & physical health, social interaction, attitudes, learning & memory, criminality, work, lifespan development and many others. Graduates go on to qualify as psychologists in a number of areas, for example clinical, counselling, occupational, health, educational and also as researchers and academics. Others choose not to pursue further training, but find the skills and knowledge they have acquired to be of benefit in other work settings. In the last five years, 94% of our graduates found employment or are in further training.

DTS is a challenging, exciting, and experiential degree in which practice, analysis, and theory are closely intertwined. Each year of the course involves the study of plays in context, theatre theory, a range of core practical skills, and a public production. In the final year, self-managing creative teams are formed to devise an original show for presentation in The Granary Theatre. The creative and critical skills developed on the course are vital for work in the theatre and in a wide range of other careers. DTS graduates work as teachers, administrators, designers, festival curators, actors and form their own theatre companies.
