Holden Caulfield in the 21st Century
Directions: For the following categories, decide what choices Holden
would make if he was a teenager in 2021. Base your answers on how Holden
has behaved in the novel.

1. What type of music would Holden listen to if he was a teenager in 2020?

Instead of just choosing a genre, can you name specific bands or artists and
explain why?

Lame: Holden would listen to rock because he is old school and this
reflects his personality.

Better: We feel like he would listen to classic rock because Holden

likes things to stay the same, like the way he likes the museum and he
would probably find most modern music to be phony because of the
emphasis on money or appearance or materialism. He would probably
like Led Zeppelin and The Beatles.

Discussion Questions

Chapter 21
Before starting the chapter, I have a discussion with students who are the eldest
sibling and if their younger siblings look up to them, and also with the reverse

- When Holden is looking through Phoebe’s stuff and sees the middle name
she created for herself, I have students share their middle names and meanings

Chapter 22
- Before starting the chapter, I have a discussion about what students think
Holden will do with his life when he is my age, what he wants to be when he finally
grows up
- I also have a quick discussion about song lyrics and if it is always important to
know the meaning behind the words, or if it OK to interpret music however you
want as Holden misinterprets, misreads that poem

Chapter 24
- When Holden talks about keeping that quote Mr. Antolini gave him, I have
students share if they keep anything sentimental. I have several things, a few of
which I carry every day.

Chapter 25
- When Holden sees the curse words, I have a discussion about the first time
we heard profanity. I have a great story about the first time I heard racial slurs and
students always have great stories to share.

End of Novel
- In my Visual Guide, the last slide is a picture of the letter Salinger sent to a
movie study explaining why he doesn’t want Catcher adapted into a movie. I think
Salinger’s son, Matt, controls his estate now, so I have a discussion about if Matt
should sell the rights, which could earn him millions, even if this decision goes
against his father’s wishes.
- If you have ever seen the movie, Field of Dreams, the reclusive writer, Terrence
Mann, is directly based on Salinger. In the short story the movie is based on, the
author, WP Kinsella, uses Salinger’s name instead of Terrence Mann and Salinger
threatened to sue, but didn’t when the movie version changed the name.
