Various art movements exhibit distinct characteristics which include the

different elements of arts such as the color, texture, shape, form, line, space,
and value. Characteristics of different art movements play a vital role in
identifying art pieces in different art movements as well as the mood, idea and
message derived therein. This lesson will enlighten you to be more aware of the
different artworks’ message, idea or mood reflected by the different artists.

After you are through with this module, you are expected to:

 reflect on and derive the mood, idea, or message from selected artworks;

 create an artwork that portrays a message of gratitude of today’s frontliners;

 display appreciation of the different characteristics of art movements; and

 demonstrate respect for individual differences.

A. Futurism (Italian: Futurismo) was an artistic and social movement that
originated in Italy in the early 20th century. It emphasised speed, technology,
youth, violence, and objects such as the car, the airplane, and the industrial

city. Its key figures were the Italians Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Umberto
Boccioni, Carlo Carrà, Fortunato Depero, Gino Severini, Giacomo Balla,
and Luigi Russolo. It glorified modernity and aimed to liberate Italy from the
weight of its past. Cubism contributed to the formation of Italian Futurism's
artistic style. Important Futurist works included Marinetti's Manifesto of Futurism,
Boccioni's sculpture Unique Forms of Continuity in Space, Balla's
painting Abstract Speed + Sound, and Russolo's The Art of Noises.

Although it was largely an Italian phenomenon, there were parallel movements

in Russia, where some Russian Futurists would later go on to found groups of
their own; other countries either had a few Futurists or had movements inspired
by Futurism. The Futurists practiced in every medium of art, including painting,
sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, industrial design, interior design, urban
design, theatre, film, fashion, textiles, literature, music, architecture, and
even cooking.

B. Artes mechanicae (mechanical arts) are a medieval concept of ordered

practices or skills, often juxtaposed to the traditional seven liberal arts (artes
liberales). Also called "servile" and "vulgar", from antiquity they had been
deemed unbecoming for a free man, as ministering to baser needs.

Johannes Scotus Eriugena (9th century) divides them somewhat arbitrarily into
seven parts:

 vestiaria (tailoring, weaving)

 agricultura (agriculture)
 architectura (architecture, masonry)
 militia and venatoria (warfare and hunting, military education, "martial
arts")

9
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education
Region VII
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF TOLEDO CITY

 mercatura (trade)
 coquinaria (cooking)
 metallaria (blacksmithing, metallurgy)

In his Didascalicon, Hugh of St Victor (12th century)

includes navigation, medicine and theatrical arts instead of commerce,
agriculture and cooking. Hugh's treatment somewhat elevates the mechanical
arts as ordained to the improvement of humanity, a promotion which was to
represent a growing trend among late medievals. The classification of the artes
mechanicae as applied geometry was introduced to Western Europe
by Dominicus Gundissalinus (12th century) under the influence of his readings
in Arabic scholarship.

In the 19th century, "mechanic arts" referred to some of the fields that are
now known as engineering. Use of the term was apparently an attempt to
distinguish these fields from creative and artistic endeavors like the performing
arts and the fine arts, which were for the upper class of the time, and
the intelligentsia. The mechanic arts were also considered practical fields for
those that did not come from good families.

Related phrases, "useful arts" or "applied arts" probably encompass the

mechanic arts as well as craftsmanship in general.

The most famous usage of the term "mechanic arts" (and the one in which it
is most commonly encountered today) is in the Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act.

C. What Is Non-Objective Art?

Artists use all kinds of ideas in their work, even some related to math. You
might have taken geometry in high school, but did you know that it's sometimes
also used in art? In the early 20th century, some artists used straight lines and
geometric figures in work they called non-objective art.

Non-objective art is not based on things you see in the real world. Often it
involves elements of geometry, and you might see it referred to as geometric
abstraction. It's a type of abstract art, in which artists aren't concerned with
portraying recognizable objects from visible reality. Instead, in non-objective art,
they work with ideas and formal elements of composition. This makes it very
different from representational art, in which the goal is to render an image of
something like a person, animal, place or thing.

Non-objective art uses geometric forms, clean edges, flat planes and simplified
dimensions. The artist paints on the canvas in ways that emphasize its flatness.

11
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education
Region VII
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF TOLEDO CITY

Example of non-objective When you look at a non-objective painting, you might see
art by Olga Rozanova
lines and shapes like triangles or squares. But you don't get
a sense that some shapes are closer to you than others. In
this type of work, artists often paint geometric forms in
bright color and give them crisp, clean edges. You'll rarely
see works done in this style with thick brushstrokes of
textured paint. In a way, non-objective art expresses ideas
like simplicity and purity.
