photographs and assemble them into a single pdf file (there are many apps available
for doing this).
• Start each question on a new page. Write your roll number in the top right corner
of each page. Use only one side of each page(for clear photo).
• Write your name, department and roll number clearly at the top of the first page.
• Answer all questions. Give proper justification. Don’t copy from others.
• Upload your work to the Google-Classroom for your tutorial section.

(1) Let S be the set of integers. If a, b ∈ S, define aRb if ab ≥ 0. Is R an equivalence

relation on S? Justify your answer. (1 Mark)
(2) Does the set Q+ of positive rational numbers form a group under multiplication?
Justify your answer. (1 Mark)
(3) Let F denote the set of real-valued continuous functions on [0, 1]. If f, g ∈ F , define
f + g and f g by (1 Mark)
• (f + g)(x) = f (x) + g(x) for all x ∈ [0, 1], and
• (f g)(x) = f (x)g(x) for all x ∈ [0, 1].
Is F a field with these two binary operations?
(4) Let F = R and V = R × R. Define (1 Mark)
(x, y) + (x1 , y1 ) = (x + x1 , 0), (x, y), (x1 , y1 ) ∈ V
c(x, y) = (cx, cy), c ∈ F, (x, y) ∈ V.
Is V a vector space with these operations? Justify your answer.
(5) Let V be the vector space of 2 × 2 matrices. Is (1 Mark)

a subspace of V ? Justify your answer.
