ODD SEMESTER 2020-21

MA102 – ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS II
ASSIGNMENT 2
Monday, 28 December 2020 Due: Thu, 31 December, 11:59pm
Marks:5
Instructions:
• Use a mathematical word-processor (e.g. TeX) or write on A4 paper, take careful
photographs and assemble them into a single pdf file (there are many apps available
for doing this).
• Start each question on a new page. Write your roll number in the top right corner
of each page. Use only one side of each page(for clear photo).
• Write your name, department and roll number clearly at the top of the first page.
• Answer all questions. Give proper justification. Don’t copy from others.
• Upload your work to the Google-Classroom for your tutorial section.
Be sure that you are logged on with your official (@itbhu.ac.in) E-mail
account. Otherwise you will not receive credit.

(3) Let V denote the set of real valued twice differentiable functions on R. If α, β ∈ V ,
and c ∈ R define α + β and cα by
(α + β)(x) = α(x) + β(x), for all x ∈ R, and
(cα)(x) = c(α(x)), for all x ∈ R.
It can be shown that V is a vector space over R with these operations.
(a) Let f, g, h ∈ V be defined by f (x) = x, g(x) = sin x and h(x) = cos x for
x ∈ R, and let S = {f, g, h}. Is S linearly independent? Justify. (1 Mark)

It can be shown that W is a subspace of V . Find a basis for W and compute
the dimension of W .
(c) Let B = {ex , xex }, and W = span(B). It can be shown that B is a basis for

W . Prove that if f ∈ W then dx f ∈ W , and that dx is a linear operator on W .
