GI Bleed: Arterial Embolization

A. Patient Identification
-The patient is a 78 year old man.
B. Patient Medical History
-The patient presented a blood in her stool.
C. Anatomy Described
-Gastroinstestinal tract is the pathway food takes from the mouth, through the
esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine. It is supplied by various branches
coming off the aorta.
D. Case / Reason for Procedure
-Suspected bleeding in the GI tract
E. Imaging studies / materials (sample pictures like x-ray/ct scan/ultrasound etc. of the area
of interest)

F. Procedure
-Enter the arterial system by inserting a small catheter directed into the blood
vessel supplying the large intestine.
-Contrast is injected and some flowed from the artery into the large bowel
indicating the presence of an arterial bleeding.
-Metacoils are inserted into the blood vessels supplying that area to stop the
bleeding.
G. Result of the Procedure
-The contrast no longer entering the bowel and remaining within the blood vessels
indicating the bleeding had stopped.
