How to use this Competency Based Learning Materials

The unit of competency, "Install wiring devices of

floor and wall mounted outlets, lighting
fixtures/switches and auxiliary outlets", is one of the
competencies of Electrical Installation and Maintenance
NCII, a course which comprises the knowledge, skills and
attitudes required for a TVET trainer to possess.
The module, Installing wiring devices of floor and
wall mounted outlets, lighting fixtures/switches and
auxiliary outlets, contains training materials and
activities related to identifying learner’s requirements,
preparing session plan, preparing basic instructional
materials and organizing learning and teaching activities
for you to complete.
In this module, you are required to go through a
series of learning activities in order to complete each
learning outcome. In each learning outcome are
Information Sheets, Self-Checks, Task Sheets and Job
Sheets. Follow and perform the activities on your own. If
you have questions, do not hesitate to ask for assistance
from your facilitator.
Remember to:
 Read information sheets and complete the self-
checks. Suggested references are included to
supplement the materials provided in this module.
 Perform the Task Sheets and Job Sheets until you
are confident that your outputs conform to the
Performance Criteria Checklist that follows the
sheets.
 Submit outputs of the Task Sheets and Job Sheets
to your facilitator for evaluation and recording in
the Accomplishment Chart. Outputs shall serve
as your portfolio during the Institutional
Competency Evaluation. When you feel confident
that you have had sufficient practice, ask your
trainer to evaluate you. The results of your
assessment will be recorded in your Progress
Chart and Accomplishment Chart.

ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM

A wiring diagram is a simplified conventional pictorial representation of an

electrical circuit. It shows the components of the circuit as simplified shapes, and the
power and signal connections between the devices.

A wiring diagram usually gives information about the relative position and
arrangement of devices and terminals on the devices, to help in building or servicing
the device. This is unlike a schematic diagram, where the arrangement of the
components' interconnections on the diagram usually does not correspond to the
components' physical locations in the finished device. A pictorial diagram would
show more detail of the physical appearance, whereas a wiring diagram uses a more
symbolic notation to emphasize interconnections over physical appearance.

A wiring diagram is often used to troubleshoot problems and to make sure

that all the connections have been made and that everything is present.

The following are common electrical wiring diagram needed in the

installation of electrical wiring plan.

and its Definition

Schematic Diagram: A drawing

showing all significant components,
parts, or tasks (and their
interconnections) of a circuit, device,
flow, process, or project by means of
standard symbols. Schematic diagrams
for a project may also be used for
preparing preliminary cost estimates.

A wiring diagram is a type of

schematic which uses abstract pictorial
symbols to show all the interconnections
of components in a system. Wiring
diagrams are made up of two things:
symbols that represent the components

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Recognize the different types of electrical of wiring devices that use in the
electrical work.
2. Select and use of electrical wiring devices to be used in a particular
electrical work.
3. Prepared for electrical wiring devices according to the job requirements.

WIRING DEVICES

The extent of wiring device work is indicated by drawings and schedules. Wiring
devices are defined as single discrete units of electrical distribution systems
which are intended to carry but not utilize electrical energy.

Work described in this Section includes furnishing all labor, materials, equipment,
tools and incidentals required for a complete and operable installation of wall
switches, receptacles, plugs, device plates and box covers. All equipment
shall be installed, adjusted, tested and placed in operation in accordance with
these Specifications, the manufacturer's recommendations and as shown on
the Drawings.

The following are common electrical wiring devices needed in the electrical
installation.

A ground fault circuit

Ground fault interrupter (GFCI), or Residual
current Current Device (RCD) is a type
interrupting device of circuit breaker which shuts off
electric power when it senses an
imbalance between the outgoing
and incoming current
Grounding type A grounding line is used to
convenience protect your appliances from
outlet surges or overvoltage problems.
It also stabilizes voltage and
protects people, properties, and
equipment from electric shock.
Convenience A convenience outlet is a
Outlet receptacle outlet installed into
something other than the
building itself. Such as into the
base of a lamp, or the side of a
medicine cabinet.

Weatherproof The weatherproof outlet is a

convenience particular type of electrical outlet
outlet that is designed for installation
outside the home. Outlets of this
kind are often installed on the
exterior of homes, garages, or

Single-Pole Switch The single-pole switch is the
general-purpose workhorse of
switches. It is used to control a

from a single location.

DUPLEX SWITCH A duplex switch consists of two

separate switches in the same
switch box. Each switch may
have its own mounting strap
within a two-gang box, or there
may be two switches held by a
single mounting strap in a single-
gang box. ... Duplex switches are
common in residential wiring
because they conserve wire.
Three way switch an electric switch that has three
terminals; used to control a

that conduct electricity. It
can be made of many
plastics, but vinyl is most
popular, as it stretches
well and gives an effective
and long lasting insulation.
Electrical tape for class H

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are gadgets to protect workers from

injury or illness caused by having contact with the dangers/hazards in the workplace
whether they are chemical, biological, radiation, physical, electrical, mechanical and
others.

These are the common Personal Protective Equipment gadgets used in

electrical installation.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE PICTURES

EQUIPMENT AND DESCRIPTION

Hard hats / Helmets - is a type of

helmet predominantly used in workplace
environments such as industrial or
construction sites to protect the head
from injury due to falling objects, impact
with other objects, debris, rain, and
electric shock. Suspension bands inside
the helmet spreads the helmet's weight
and the force of any impact over the top
of the head.
Gloves- covering for the hand made
with a separate sheath for each finger
and for the thumb.

Goggles - large spectacles equipped

with special lenses, protective rims, etc.,
to prevent injury to the eyes from strong
