Información

Present perfect

There are a few reasons for using the present perfect:

1. Events that started in the past but are important now.

Example:

I have eaten lunch already, sorry – I won’t be coming with you

She has fixed her bike, so she can come with us

She’s broken her leg so she can’t compete.

2. Experience – life, career. These might be finished actions or unfinished actions

Examples:

I have never met such a nice man.

I have taught English for four years.

I have never eaten at that restaurant.

3. News and very recent events.

Examples:

The terrorists have named their next target.

The Prime Minister has arrived.

The speech has started.

Subject + Auxiliary Verb + Main Verb

Example:

I + have + verb -ed/past participle

Grammar rules for the present perfect tense:

• The auxiliary verb changes according to the sentence's subject.

• The main verb uses the past participle form.

• For regular verbs, add –ed to the verb base form.

• For irregular verbs, check the verb chart.

Subject Auxiliary Verb Main Verb   

I have lived here for 3 years.

We have played football since we were kids.

She has known me since we were in college together.

For negative sentences, “not” is added between the auxiliary and the main verb.

Subject Auxiliary Verb Main Verb

I have not seen the result of the match yet.

You have not done the training.

She has not paid her entrance fee.

For questions, the auxiliary verb comes before the subject.

Auxiliary Verb Subject Main Verb

Have you seen the news?

Has she left the building yet?

Have they done their homework already?

We use the adverbs since, for, just, yet, already and adverbs of frequency with the present perfect.

Since
Is used as a point in time and means “from that point to the time of speaking”.

Example:

Since 1990, since yesterday.

For
Is used with a duration.

Example:

For a few days, for a long time, for 3 hours.

Just
Is used to express a recently completed action. Just must be placed between the auxiliary and the main verb.

Example:

I´ve just gone out for lunch.

Yet
Is used in a negative sentence to show that an action which began in the past is not finished or completed, or that something which was
expected to happen still has to.

Examples:
We haven´t finished eating yet.

We haven't had lunch yet.

Already
Is used in an affirmative sentence to show that the action began in the past and finished at an indefinite time.

Example:

I have already finished my dinner.

Frequency adverbs:
Never and always are placed between the auxiliary and the main verb.

He has never been to Portugal.

I have never driven a racing car.

I have always wanted to buy a piano.
