ABE 153 - AB Waste Management Engineering

Laboratory Exercise Number 1

Water Pollution

I. Introduction
The polluting of water bodies is referred to as water pollution. Water
pollution occurs when industrial and agricultural effluents contaminate water bodies
such as rivers, lakes, oceans, groundwater, and aquifers.

When water gets polluted, it adversely affects all lifeforms that directly or
indirectly depend on this source. Contamination of water will have long-term
consequences.

The 2004 Philippine Clean Water Act (Republic Act No. 9275). An act that
establishes a comprehensive water quality management system and serves other
functions. This Act provides for the abatement and control of pollution from land-
based sources, and lays down water quality standards and regulations.

II. Objectives
At the end of the exercise, the student should be able to:
1. Have a perspective on the reality of water pollution that is happening at a
community level; and
2. Know the cause, effects and possible solutions of water pollution in a certain
area.

III. Methodology
1. Identify, take photos and describe the different sources and causes of water
pollution in the community.
2. Determine the impacts of water pollution in the community.
3. Acquire a copy of ordinance/s from the barangay/municipality/city supporting
the implementation of the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004 or any ordinance/s
regulating the citizens’ activities related to water pollution.
4. Discuss how this ordinance is being implemented in the community.
5. Explain your suggestions, recommendations and ideas on how to mitigate the
effects of water pollution in the community.
IV. Results and Discussion

1. Photos of the different sources and causes of water pollution in the community.

 This is one of the main reasons of water pollution, garbage disposal. Some communities
don’t know how to properly segregate and dispose their garbage’s. They tend to put it in
canals, side of the roads, bodies of water and etc. This will cause pollution not only water
also other types of pollution.
 Also, household waste or sewage. This also contribute in water pollution dishwater
contains leftover foods, urine, manure, detergents and soaps or even materials that
is contaminated by sick person.
 This is an irrigation canals that is infested with garbage’s. This will affect the water
that is distributed in the farms and it will cause pollution.

2. Determine the impacts of water pollution in the community.

 Contaminated water contains different bacteria and viruses that can be responsible
for diarrhea, cholera and other health related problems.
 Shortage of water supply can be an impact to the community because the source of
water is contaminated and it’s not advisable to drink the contaminated water.
 Livestock can be affected also, such as in the fish ponds, agricultural animals or
even pets. This will lead to loss of income because it can kill animals.
 In agriculture, the water can lead to the accumulation of microbiological and
chemical pollutants in crops, livestock products and soil and water resources. This
will also affect the consumers and farm workers.
3. Copy of Ordinance from the Brgy that supports the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004.
4. Discuss how this ordinance is being implemented in the community.

 An ordinance enacting the Solid Waste Management Act 2019 of Brgy. 30-B,
Sta. Maria, Laoag City.
 The Brgy 30-B, Sta. Maria, Laoag City is committed to the protection,
preservation and conservation of the Ecosystem.
 The unsystematic wastes disposal by households and commercial/industrial
establishments causes unsightly surroundings, polluted environment, and spread
of communicable diseases.
 The practice of wastes segregation to facilities reuses and recycling does not
only reduce the cost of collection and disposal of garbage but conserves the
natural sources of materials and avoid wasteful consumption of goods.
 This ordinance is not just for water pollution but for the protection of
environment including bodies of water. This ordinance will lead the community
to help and protect the environment. Proper segregation, recycling and
conservation of environment.

5. Explain your suggestions, recommendations and ideas on how to mitigate the effects of
water pollution in the community.

 It should start within ourselves, if you can, pick up the garbage and take it to a trash
can.
 Proper segregation of garbage’s is important also. Non-biodegradable and
biodegradable in order for us to recycle also.
 No throwing of garbage’s in rivers or lakes.
 Avoid using chemical pesticides or fertilizers.
 Clean up drive
 Weekend oplan dalus
V. Summary and Conclusions

 Water pollution is occurring to nowadays in community level. According to my

observation to our community, its very evident that water sources or bodies of
waters are contaminated with garbage’s and even canals. That’s why our barangay
officials are doing their job to mitigate the effects of water pollution. Their
implementing ordinance in order to help our environment to heal and stop the
further effects of it.
 The causes are us not knowing to segregate, abusing the environment overall our
activities. The possible solutions start within us, we need to be more cautious and
stop abusing our environment. We need to segregate, we need to clean up drive, we
need to plant more trees, recycle and stop using a lot of chemicals.
