Re-apply the brake and remove the temporary polished rod clamp
from above the stuffing box.
8. Carefully start the pumping unit and check the load cell cable for
clearance over the entire stroke. If acceptable, the pumping unit can
be returned to “on-line” status.

Stainless Steel Polished Rod Load Cell
Introduction and Overview
The Stainless Steel Polished Rod Load Cell provides accuracy
and durability in a harsh wellhead environment. The instrument
is constructed of 300 series stainless steel and is hermetically
sealed (nitrogen gas filled). It is immune to salt spray and is
unaffected by H2S. Figure 1 shows two views of a typical
polished rod load cell.

The design of the device minimizes the effects of impact

loading and ensures long-term stability. In addition, the load
sensor is equipped with a lightning suppression circuit. The unit Figure 7: Mark II Pumping Unit Load Cell Cable Routing
receives excitation voltage (+10.00VDC) from the controller.

Load Cell Cable Connector Installation

Following are the steps to install the polished rod load cell cable
connector.

NOTE: Prior to installing the load cell on the well, disassemble the load
cell cable connector as shown in Figure 2.

1. Remove all power from the Load Cell Cable.

Figure 2: Load Cell Cable Connector

2. Wrap Teflon tape or use thread sealant on the Threaded Connector

Shell pipe thread that threads into the load cell body. This helps
provide a weather-tight connection.
3. Assemble the “threaded Connector Shell” into the load cell body and
tighten it, using a wrench on the provided wrench flats.
4. Insert the cable connector end into the Threaded Connector Shell
Figure 6: Air Balance Pumping Unit Load Cell Routing and ensure it is properly aligned and securely seated.
5. Push the rubber strain relief/seal grommet, disk and weather-tight
cap into position and thread the cap onto the threaded shell. Hand-
tighten the Weather Tight Cap onto the connector shell to form a
tight seal.

Routing
Following are the steps to properly route the load cell cable.
1. As shown in Figure 6, place the loop in the load cell cable over the
“S” hook on the load cell. Figure 7 shows the load cell cable routing
for a Mark II Pumping Unit using a Spring Kit (PC8500-925).
2. Anchor the load cell cable on the pumping unit such that it pulls on
the “S” hook at the load cell and has sufficient length to allow for the
full vertical travel of the carrier bar.
3. In the full “down” position of the pumping unit, a slight sag should be
visible in the load cell cable, and in the full up and center positions,
the sag should become slightly greater.

Caution: Do not leave excess slack in the load cell cable, as wind may
cause the cable to become entangled in moving parts of the pumping
unit or parts on the Well Head.
