CE 141-2 HW #3

Solve the following:

1. A trench 100 ft long is excavated 300 ft away and is parallel to a river bank. A sand aquifer is
20 ft thick and similar to that shown in Fig. 3-6 The river water surface is 30 ft above the
horizontal bottom of the aquifer. If the water depth in the trench must be maintained at 6ft,
at what rate must water be pumped from the trench? How far from the trench will the
aquifer cease to be saturated?

SOLUTION:

𝑄 = 𝐾𝑖𝐴
𝐾𝐿(𝐻 2 − ℎ𝑜2 )
𝑄𝑅 =

𝐾𝐿(𝐻 2 − ℎ𝑜2 )
𝑄=
2𝑅
300𝑓𝑡
𝐾=
𝑑𝑎𝑦

𝑅 = 𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑢𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑖𝑛𝑓𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒

𝑅 = 3000(𝑆𝑜 )√𝐾 = 3000(14)(. 3048)√((3000)(0.3048))/((24)(60)(60) = 416.26𝑚

(300)(100)(202 − 602 ) 𝑓𝑡 3
𝑄= = 18200
2(300) 𝑑

2. An aquifer slopes away from a river, as shown in Fig. 3-7 The hydraulic conductivity of the
aquifer which is 30 ft thick is known to be 0.2 ft/day. The water is 40 ft deep in the river, and
the bottom of the trench is 30 ft below the bottom of the river and 600 ft away from the
edge of the river. The trench is 40 ft deep. Will water flow out of the trench without
pumping? If so, what will be the rate of flow?

SOLUTION:

Consider Point B at Bottom of trench

Consider Point A at Bottom of River

Consider Bottom Level of Trench as Datum

Total hydraulic at A=Total hydraulic head at B

∆𝑧 + ℎ1 = 0 + 𝑃𝐵
20 + 30 = 𝑃𝐵

𝑃𝐵 = 50𝑓𝑡
∴ 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑛 𝑇𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐ℎ 𝑤𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑎 ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑓𝑡, 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑑𝑒𝑝𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑇𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐ℎ 𝑎𝑣𝑎𝑖𝑙𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑜𝑛𝑙𝑦 35 𝑓𝑡. 𝑇ℎ𝑢𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑇𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐ℎ
Calculate Rate of Flow(Q)

Total hydraulic head at A=∆𝑧 + ℎ1

= 20 + 30 = 50𝑓𝑡
Total Hydraulic head at B=0 + ℎ2

0 + 35 = 35𝑓𝑡
50 − 35 15
∴𝑖= = = 0.025
𝐿 500
𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑤 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒, 𝑄 = 𝐾𝑖𝐴 (darcy law)

0.05𝑓𝑡 3
𝑄 = 0.1(0.025)(𝐵 × 1) = 0.1(0.025)(20 × 1) =
𝑑𝑎𝑦

END HERE- Goodluck!!!!!
