EXAMPLE 1

The rated values for a separately excited DC motor are 18kW, 125 V, 1800 r/min and the
efficiency η is 91% (the losses such as mechanical losses and iron losses are ignored). The
armature resistance is 0.25 Ω. Evaluate the following questions.

1. the armature current and the rated torque

2. the speed at full-load when the armature voltage is reduced by 10%
3. the speed at full-load current when the flux is reduced by 10% and the output torque
available by armature current at this speed

Solution:

1. From the relation of the input and output powers as

𝑃𝑖𝑛 𝑉𝑎 ∙ 𝐼𝑎
𝑃𝑜𝑢𝑡 = =
𝜂 𝜂

the armature current is

𝑃𝑜𝑢𝑡 18 𝑘𝑊
𝐼𝑎 = =
𝑉𝑎 ∙ 𝜂 125 ∙ 0,91

18000
=
113,75

= 158,24 A

The rated torque is

𝑃𝑜𝑢𝑡
𝑇𝑒 =
𝜔𝑚

18000
= 18000×2𝜋
60

18000
=
1884

= 9,55 Nm.

2. The armature voltage reduced by 10%, Vnew, is 112.5V. At this voltage, the speed is

𝐸𝑎
𝜔𝑚 =
𝑘𝜙𝑓
𝑉𝑛𝑒𝑤 − 𝑅𝑎 𝐼𝑎
= 𝑉𝑛𝑒𝑤 − 𝑅𝑎 𝐼𝑎
𝜔𝑚

112,5 −(0,25 ×158,24 )

= 112,5 −(0,25 ×158,24 )
1884

−72,94
= −72,94
1884

−72,94
=
−0,0387

= 1884,75 𝑟𝑎𝑑⁄𝑠
3. The speed at the flux reduced by 10% is
𝐸𝑎 𝑉𝑛𝑒𝑤 − 𝑅𝑎 𝐼𝑎
𝜔𝑚 = =
0,9𝑘𝜙𝑓 0,9𝑘𝜙𝑓

112,5 −(0,25 ×158,24 ) −72,94

= =
0,9 ∙ −0,0387 −0,03483

= 2094,17 𝑟𝑎𝑑⁄𝑠

At this speed, the output torque available by armature current is

𝑇𝑒 = 0,9𝑘𝜙𝑓𝐼𝑎 = −0,03483 × 158,24

= -5,511 Nm
