Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australi an Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editi ons as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest editi on, and any
amendments thereto.
Full detail s of all Australi an Standards and related publications wil l be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publi cati ons; this informati on is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australi an
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives detail s of new publications, new edit ions
and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.

PREFACE

This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee on Structural Steel. It is
intended to cover the technical aspects of supply of intermediate and high-strength quenched
and tempered steel plates for structural and pressure vessel applications.
This Standard is presented in the same general format as AS 3678, Structural steel — Hot-
rolled plates, floorplates and slabs and AS 1548, Steel plates for boilers and pressure vessels
to facilitate its use. Similarly, the supply conditions and dimensional requirements are
compatible with these Standards.
It introduces new Grades 500, 600, 700 and 700PV, which are high-strength, low-alloy steels
with good weldability, formability and low-temperature toughness.
Grades 500, 600 and 700 are intended for use in structural applications and are mechanically
tested on a batch basis in line with ASTM A 514, Specification for high-yield-strength,
quenched and tempered steel plate, suitable for welding. Grade 700PV is intended for use in
unfired pressure vessels and each plate is mechanically tested in line with ASTM A 517,
Specification for pressure vessel plates, alloy steel, high-strength, quenched and tempered.
Thus the only significant differences between Grades 500, 600, 700 and 700PV are the nature
and frequency of mechanical tests. The mechanical properties of each Grade are developed
by quenching and tempering after plate rolling.
The unification of these Grades into one Standard is to provide maximum availability for
users and to reduce costs. Grade 700 can be used in lieu of Grade 700PV if the results of
additional testing are satisfactory (see Appendix E).

STANDARDS AUSTRALIA

Australian Standard
Structural and pressure vessel steel— Quenched and tempered plate

1 SCOPE This Standard specifies technical requirements for the production and supply
of intermediate and high-strength quenched and tempered low-alloy steel plates from a
minimum thickness of 5 mm to a maximum thickness of 110 mm. It is intended for use in
fusion welded structures and pressure vessels.

2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS The documents referred to in this Standard are listed

in Appendix A.

3 DESIGNATION
3.1 General The steel is supplied in four grades and shall be designated as follows:
(a) Grades 500, 600 and 700—where the mechanical testing shall be carried out at a
frequency required for fusion welded structures.
(b) Grade 700PV—where the mechanical testing shall be carried out at a frequency required
for fusion welded boilers and pressure vessels.
3.2 Steelmaking process The steel shall be made by either the basic oxygen process or
an electric process.
NOTE: The basic oxygen process means the process of making steel in a basic converter blown with
commercially pure oxygen.
4 CHEMICAL COMPOSITION
4.1 General The method of sampling for chemical analysis shall be in accordance with
AS 1213. Chemical composition shall be determined by the procedures given in AS 1050
or AS K1, or by other procedures which achieve the same, or better, degree of accuracy.
4.2 Cast analysis A chemical analysis of the liquid steel shall be made to determine the
proportions of the specified elements. In cases where it is impracticable to obtain samples
from the liquid steel, analysis on test samples taken in accordance with AS 1213 may be
reported as cast analysis.
The cast analysis of the steel shall conform to the limits specified in Table 1 for the
appropriate Grade. Test certificates reporting cast analysis shall indicate values for those
elements necessary to establish compliance with the appropriate Grade, plus any other

element intentionally added to the steel.

4.3 Product analysis The chemical analysis of the finished product is not a mandatory
requirement of this Standard. When the steel is subjected to a product analysis, the analysis
shall conform to the limits given in Table 1.
