Rotary Around the World


Nigeria: The percentage of students
in Nigeria who score high enough on their exams at the enc of secondary school to qualify for university admission has been steadily declining. to encourage academic excellence and foster healthy competition, the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt hosted a quiz tournament for 12 local schools in honor of Vocational Service Month. The club donated dictionarieis to the 200 students and teachers who attended the event, working through Distionary 4 Life, a project of the Rotary Club of Tooting, England, and Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland. a sightseeing boat sank in Lake Ohrid, killing 15 of the 50 Bulgarian tourists on board. The Rotary clubs of Ohrid, FYROM, and Pirdop, Bulgaria, located in the town where many of the victims lived, raised funds for a memorial in the city of Ohrid and organized a trip there in September 2010 for its ofcial unveiling. Families of the victims, survivors of the accident and and Rotarians from both Ohrid and Pirdop attended the ceremony. Pirdob club members have also lent support to victims relatives and to surviviors. Sunrise launced an initiative to help at-risk students stay in school. Its approach includes mentoring, nancial assistance, leadership training, and values education. Since the start of the program, the club as supported 17 students with the help of sponsors from New Zealand, Singapore, and Taiwan. It has also trianed 38 mentors and held several workshops.

USA: To celebrate its centennial this


year, the Rotary Club of Denver decided to work with History Colorado, which operates 12 museums and historical sites around the state, to set up an Internet-based system linking the satellite sites to the organizations main facility, the Colorado History Museum in Denver.

But when the club learned that the necessary Internet service wasnt available--Colorado ranks 42nd in the nation in broadband connictivity--it teamed up with a technology purchasing cooperative and with Rotarians in all of the states clubs to secure a $100 million grant from the U.S. government to bring low-cost, high-speed internet to the entire state.

Working with the Rotary clubs of Nagua and Salcedo, volunteers on the groups annual missions remove cataracts and perform surgeries on children with crossed eyes. Canada: The historic shing village


of Steveston, B.C., located at the mouth of the Fraser River, is home to Canadas largest commercial shing eet and has been called the Salmon Capital of the World. To honor this heritage, the Rotary Club of Steveston-Richmond installed banners along the main streets that depict a shing scene and feature the clubs name and website. Club members, styling themselves as the Rotary Club of Steveston Pirates, also make an annual appearance in the Steveston Salmon Festival Parade.
