Objective: Find the Rf values for the colored components present in two samples by separating
them using ascending paper chromatography.

PRELAB INFORMATION
THIS PART WILL BE DELIVERED IN CLASS ON MONDAY AUG 1ST

In your notebook do the following research:

• Date and title of the practice

• INTRODUCTION: Previous to the lab practice, write an introduction (half page) including the
following definitions: Chromatography, stationary phase, mobile phase, solute, solvent, retention
factor (Rf), capillary action, solvent front, polarity.
• HYPOTHESIS: Which components do you think will have a higher Rf value after the separation by
ascending paper chromatography: the more polar components or the less polar components?
• OBSERVATIONS: copy the following charts in your notebook so you can register easily the results
of the practice.
