Honors Earthquake Scrapbook

For this project, you will create a scrapbook of items related to earthquakes. This scrapbook is to be personal
endeavor by relating space to your own interests, research and experiences. Your scrapbook must include at
least 8 entries. The first 7 entries are to be selected in any combination from the list below but may not be
repeated. The last entry is to be a reflection on what you have learned through this project. The purpose of this
is to stretch your current knowledge – if you do not learn anything new you most likely have not done a good
job on the scrapbook. The scrapbook is worth 150 points.

1. Briefly explain the parts of an earthquake (what causes an earthquake, fault types, focus, epicenter, seismic
waves – P, S & L) Include diagrams and other explanations.
2. Relate the risk of an earthquake from the New Madrid fault (location, description of past events, occurrence
odds)
3. Explains how to prepare for and how to survive an earthquake (what to do, where to go, emergency kit
contents)
4. Explanation of Earthquake damage: Describe the damage occurred by poorly constructed buildings / houses.
What happens with unstable soil conditions. Are landslides a concern?

5. Making your home safer: Discuss refitting construction (retrofitting). Include what to look for in the house
and how to fix items such as things that may fall, bed location, overhead fixtures, etc.

6. Use the web sites below to help you locate the most recent world-wide measurable
Earthquakes and prepare a world wide map showing the location of all the
measurable earthquakes for the past week. On your map, use different
symbols (Colors, shapes, to show the different magnitudes of earthquakes.)
Use a legend to show the individual colors and shapes. Be sure to include the
depth of the earthquake as well as the magnitude.

7. Earthquakes in Kentucky: Give on overview of Kentucky’s earthquake history and describe where the major
faults are. Include a description of our largest recorded earthquake (where located, magnitude, damage caused,
etc).

8. Describe in detail an experience you may have had with earthquakes (what you felt, where were you, time of
day, etc)

9. A poem that you have composed regarding an earthquakes

10. Artwork you have created about earthquakes

Reflection: Reflect on the progress you feel you have made in better understanding earthquakes. You can
include new things you learned while doing this assignment.

All items in your scrapbook should be presented on standard 8.5” x 11” sheets of paper and stapled together
along with a cover sheet. The scrapbook may also be presented electronically as a Power Point, web page or
document either on a disk or placed on public server under the folder Wiley using your first initial and last name
as the title.
