 PREFACE

The PPI (Producer Price Index) is considered one of the most important
economic statistical indicators for measuring changes within the economic
structure of agricultural, industrial and services activities in the country on
which stakeholders from governmental, public and private sector depend in
making decisions with the aim to support these activities in different
economic sectors.

In the framework of CAPMAS role in developing its data that is published

periodically to be more comprehensive and keep up the economic changes,
CAPMAS has updated the Producer Price index monthly bulletin starting
from November 2017 focusing on August and September 2017 and the
update has included the following points:
-Updating the base year with the base year January 2016
-Updating the weights using total values for industrial, agricultural and
services production for public and private sector (2013 – 2014)
- Updating the goods and services basket by adding new goods to be
more comprehensive.

The developed bulletin covers mainly all users needs through the
coordination and communications between concerned ministries and
associations at country level with regard to the economic activities and
commodity group.

CAPMAS is pleased to publish the new series of the monthly bulletin on

Producer Price Indices and looking forward to achieving all objectives and
meet data users needs including stakeholders from government, private
sector.

   Notice to all users of
  Producer Price Index (PPI) Bulletin

In the framework of keeping up with Central Agency for 
Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) for economic changes,
the producer price index (PPI) bulletin was developed using January
2016 as a base year instead of the base of 2004/2005 starting from the
data of the bulletin of August/September 2017.

Therefore, users of this bulletin should consider Linking between

the previous and current bulletin series according to international
statistical standards by referring to the Central Agency for Public
Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) when requesting any data
containing the two series.

- Producer price indices have been modified from June 2019 to Sep. 2021
for the following groups

1 - All Item.
2 - Manufacturing.
3 - Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products.
4 - Manufacture of plastics products.
5 - Manufacture of finished plastic products.
6 - High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Pipes.
7 - Manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products.
8 - Structural clay products.
9 - Manufacture of structural non-refractory clay building materials.
10 - Manufacture of electrical equipment.
11 - Manufacture of electric motors, generators, transformers and electricity.
12 - Electricity distribution or control apparatus.

Methodology
1- General :
The time series of producer price indices is
issued from September 2007 data using a
base year (2004/2005) , due to economic
variables and user needs the new version of
the index was developed and the new time
series has been issued using a base period
(January 2016) starting from the Bulletin's
data of August / September 2017.
2- Purposes of (PPI):
a- PPI measure changes in the prices level for
local producers of goods and services.
b- A short-term indicator of inflationary
trends.
c- National accounts deflators.
d- Required by several international
organizations such as IMF, and CBE for
economic censorship, comparison and
evaluating monetary policies.
e- Economic analytical tool for stakeholders
and researchers.
3- Producer Price:
It is thebasic prices paid to local producers of
goods and services, at the production place.
4- Base period prices:
The price of the January 2016 is used as a
base period for series of producer price
index.

5- System of weights :
Weights were extracted using average of
(2012/2013, 2013/2014) for public sector
and Public businesses, 2013, 2014 for
private sector, for the total values of
industrial, agricultural and services
production to avoid huge and sudden
changes which affects some economic
activities’ production in case of choosing
one year.
6- Scope :
All production areas in the republic are
represented in constructing of the present
index of producer price without restriction
to certain geographic zone.

7- List of products :
a-Has been taken into account the producer
price index, the most frequently selling of
commodities were selected to represent the
economic activities.
b-The list of products includes eight
sections as stated in the standard
industrial classification (I.S.I.C)
published 2015 to be consistent with
the system of national accounts
classification S.N.A 2008.
c-Number of commodities and services
in the producer price index reached
to 879 commodity.

9 - Computation:
a-The PPI is compiled in hierarchical
manner. The index is first calculated at
the 6- digit level of ISIC Rev. IV.
Indices at higher level divisions are then
derived as a weighted average of the
products falling within each division.
Finally, the overall index is obtained as
a weighted average of each activity.
b-The formula for the calculation of
Egypt’s Producer Price Index PPI is the
modified Laspeyres formula. This
Computation is Based on the short term
basis, thus each month’s price is
compared to the previous month’s price.
c-The PPI is not compiled according to
original laspeyres index due to the
different reference period used for
calculating the weights of the values
from Statistical surveys for each
production sector using average values
of (2012/2013, 2013/2014) for the
reference period for calculation of base
period prices for January 2016
according to the following formula is as
