The movie that we are going to review is THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. The
movie got released on 10th September 1994. The movie was directed by Frank
Darabont. He has also directed other of the high successful movies like The
Mist, Godzilla, King Kong etc. These all are the signatures of the masterpiece
movie he has directed which have not only won awards but also the statement
in the film industry among the whole worlds. The screenplay of the movie is
also being done by the Frank Darabont. The producer of the movie is Niki
Marvin. All the work related to cinematography is being done by the Roger
Deakins. The Music work in the movie is done by Thomas Newman. The
production company which plays the key feature role in any movie related to
fulfil all types of financial requirement is being done by Castle Rock
Entertainment. The total running time for the movie is 142 minutes (2 hrs 22
min) which is quite precise not too long or too short. As if the movie duration is
too long then it’s starts to lose its essence over the period because the
audience gets bored. The production budget for the movie was estimated to
be $25 million which includes both the advertising and the making cost of the
movie. The total revenue which the movie earned on the box office collection
was estimated to be around $58.4 million both in the domestic and the

FILMING LOCATIONS
This masterpiece movie was being shot in the OHIO STATE REFORMATORY located in the
MANSFIELD OHIO which is halfway between the Columbus and Cleveland. It has been found
that the State Reformatory where shootings happened are still as it is there even the pipe
from where Andy Dufresne came out from prison still. It makes that this masterpiece movie
are still there.
 PLOT SUMMARY
The plot opens with the scene where Andy Dufresne sitting in a car make up
the drink and reload his pistol where it led to another scene going where the
trial of Andy Dufresne is going on where he is convicted of murder charge of
his wife and her lover of lifetime imprisonment. Later he his being taken to the
jail name Shawshank Redemption where he meets with the warden of the jail
Norton. Later he got to know that Red (Ellisboyd Redding) used to provide
everything illegal into the jail and that’s when the Andy ask for the rock
hammer and Andy would pay him ten times for it. He gets his hammer from
the bookkeeper’s name Brooks Hatlen who provides him a hammer. Then
there Andy was working in new building where he overheard that captain
Hadley want to avoid tax. Andy gives him a suggestion and reveals that he was
a vice president of the bank, and he could help him out from saving tax. Later,
every policeman in the state started taking concern from Andy wherein that he
gets permanent job of tax auditor and started working for the Warden Norton
also. Andy starts helping warden NORTAN to laundry his black money by
creating a fake identity of a person who does not exist on this planet and in
return warden NORTON helped Andy to re-stablish the old library in the mean
while the old librarian has completed his punishment but he was so habitual of
prison that he could now survived as a free person and killed himself after that
Andy was made the new librarian and his friend RED as assistance. As a
librarian Andy came across a young prisoner named Tommy Williams who
asked Andy to help him complete his education and after knowing more about
Andy, Tommy told him that he knows the person who has killed his wife and
could prove the innocence of Andy. Hearing this Andy was delighted, and he
went to the warden to prove his innocence, but the warden was scared that if
Andy would be free, he would disclose his secrete of black money, so the
warden killed Tommy and put Andy to dungeon for 2 months. After coming out
of dungeon, Andy asked Red that what would you do, when you will complete
your punishment and gave him some instruction and took promise from RED to
follow his instructions and told him that now he can’t live in prison so either he
will kill himself or he will break-out of the prison. The next day Andy did not
come out of his prison and people soon realized that Andy has broken the
prison by digging a tunnel from last 20 years and after coming out of prison
Andy took all the black money of warden NORTON by becoming that non
existing person and went to Mexico to start a new life.
 CRITICAL ELEMENTS OF THE MOVIE
CAMERA TECHNIQUES

The camera angles which were used in the movie were crucial as it described
each character importance into the film whether it was a Warden Norton,
Andy Dufresne, Red conversation every scene had its own importance. Frank
Darabont very well used the different camera angles according to its message
or conversation. Many of the times Warden Norton scene were shot from the
low camera angle to increase its importance and depict the position in the film.

There was a scene where Andy plays a music, and every prisoner were looking
up the sky that scene was being shot from the Bird’s eye view depicting some
hope for the prisoners that they are set free and are in the open sky.

Many of the scenes inside of Shawshank prison were completely of grey shade
highlighted the black life where there is lack of power and no hope is left there
in behind them after going to prison.

When brook and Andy get free from the prison then as soon as the colors are
filled in the screen like celebrating the victory of freedom and they have finally
gathered some power into themselves for the future.
 CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE MOVIE

The Shawshank Redemption is all over about the lives in jail and how the
things around them revolves. It makes up the strong perception and proves the
media wrong about the harassment of the jail or the people who feared a lot.
This movie taught us the best thing that how to overcome the pressure in jail
and get ourselves busy. This movie also shows that how the things work in
prison and what kind of all illegal activities took place in prison. The movies
shows that some good bond and friendship can also be done in such an awful
place just like Andy Dufresne and Red their bond get so much stronger that
even after getting out of the prison he still contacts the Red. This taught us
what the real bonds are and how they are made which is now quite difficult in
the outer world these days. The business activity or exchanges take place
between Andy and guards tell us how the business used to occur in the prison.
It taught us how the discipline and the utilization of the jail works, and system
related to it. The other around story is where the Warden Norton shows that
how religious and good follower is, but it shows the true color by setting up the
example by slaughtering Tommy Williams that Andy shouldn’t think of
escaping prison. Some places in the movie it shows the strictness of the
captain where they don’t get compromised or negotiated instead, they kept on
reflecting their manpower or their strength by beating the prisoner and getting
harsh on them time by time. The example where one of the captains
intentionally beats up to the death of the one of the inmate cells to show his
cruelness towards the other inmates.

The Negative Analysis for the movie is the usage of lots of fowl word like fish,
rat, gorilla, and other F words which are A rated shows us how bad the
communication took in the prison and negative environment is present all
there all time. The institutionalization system where the prison is such a hard
place to live where every captain and the warden keeps on making them scare
about the escaping from the prison punishment and how good the jail
structure is there and can’t let them escape away
 Key Learnings
HOPE IS GOOD THING – As we have seen in the movie that hope is a solid
confined thing where it never dies from the heart of a person as much
someone can do. Just like we saw in movie where the Andy plays some song so
that it can instil the hope into them through this that one day they would get
out of this prison and would be free and live their lives as wanted. One should
never leave the hope and faith as these are the two biggest weapon to fight
with the hardcomings or the hurdles in your life. If anyone loses this in the
middle of his fight then he loses the fight so one should always keep alive the
hope and faith into them always.

Start taking chances in your life – There are many of the people in this world
like Red who stop taking chances into their live and leave they’re on the God or
start considering as their destiny. But the Andy character not only taught us
that we shouldn’t leave our spirit to fight back and nothing in this world is give
up or can’t happen. Just like Andy made it possible through that small hammer
by digging the tunnel in 20 years which generally took 50 years for any man.
But it was Andy and his spirit that makes him to never give up and leaving their
destiny on fate.

Bad things come around fast – Many of the people in today’s world believes
karma where if you do anything bad to someone that same thing is going to hit
you more harder than you done to someone else just like Warden Norton
where he used to convert all his black money into white but later on Andy
sends all his details about his black money to the police and ultimately at the
end he has to commit suicide. The worse he did to the prisoner harsher the
punishment he got.

Change do happen – There is a myth that people doesn’t get change or many
of us in the world act like we have changed but we aren’t. That is a wrong
perception how much the bad person is the people tends to get change by his
nearby surroundings and environment. Just like the Red where he kept on
applying for his parole but every time, he got rejected by the investigator at
the end with a different mind perspective which changed him from inside gets
him a parole.
Struggle makes you tougher – Everyone in this world is going through some
hardship in his life one or the other. But the person who faces more hurdles in
his life the more experiences he gets by that and can share his experiences
with everyone so that if the same thing happened with other, he could know
how to tackle with it. Just like Andy who spent almost half of his life in the jail
about 30 years of his life and even sometimes harsh punishment, but he
overcome all the obstacles and made clear statement through it that nothing
could turn him down.
