2.1 Week One (22/03/2021 – 26/03/2021)

I reported to my supervisor, Pn. Suhana who is also a staff in the company
where I will conduct practical training at Jurukur Hikmah. I also briefed
myself to the Licensed Surveyor, En. Hj. Fakrul, the owner of the company. I
got task from Pn. Rodziatul to do Pre-Computation Plan related about
partition. I learn about the requirement for Pre-Computation with Pn.
Rodziatul before we started and while doing the task given.

2.2 Week Two (29/03/2021 – 02/04/2021)

I learnt how to use new software which is BricsCAD and how to use the
NDCDB data and Google Earth to apply in CAD software by Pn. Rodziatul. I
also learnt on how to calculate the shareholder of each landlord when doing
the partition. I also got the next task from Pn. Rodziatul which is to make a
detail plan. Then I also had a meeting with all the practical student and
Licensed Surveyor about the hydrography project in Langkawi.

2.3 Week Three (04/04/2021 – 09/04/2021)

All the practical students went to Langkawi to perform the survey work that
had been ask by JKR. We had been explained about the flow of work and the
equipment used while doing the work by the licensed surveyor. We also had
been explained on how the echo sounder collect and record the data. We
divided into three (3) groups of practical students, and we followed the
schedule of rotation so very one will know the process and will learnt them
well. En Shahrul teched us to find the elevation of water level by using GPS.
We also create a new base at the survey location to start the traverse. The
base is measured using Topcon GR5 and traversing was measured by using
total station that in-charge by En. Firdaus. A new control point and
Temporary Benchmark (TBM) were established at Gua Langsir in the
evening of the day. Then, we continue of levelling work. We went to Teluk
Ewa to do levelling work there. Due to the weather problem, we must stop the
survey and we took one hour at the night of the day to do Vertical Control
using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Static method. After that,
the coordinate that had received from base at Jetty Kilim to the Benchmark at
Teluk Ewa had to be compared with the data of levelling. We need to go back
to Penang after finished our job there and continue doing our job in the
office.

1
2.4 Week Four (12/04/2021 – 16/04/2021)
I have been instructed to do a site survey for partition at Chenaam, Pulau
Pinang. We used Topcon Sino T300 to find the point area and if we cannot
detect the area, we used another method using total station due to the
obstacles to reach the receiver. Then I search foe the data needed for report
and continue my report and update my logbook.

2.5 Week Five (19/04/2021 – 23/04/2021)

I attended the meeting with the National Energy worker (TNB) by using

based same Datum which is in Chart Datum. The agreed scope of works is as
follows:

i. Planimetric control survey with the method of crossing from the existing boundary
stones around the survey area to the four monument survey reference marks that
generally appear for further reference. Another planimetric control should also be
performed for the formation of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)
Reference Station and the Tidal Observation Station.

ii. Height control survey by method of leveling static method to the five monumental
surveys established.

iii. Topographic and cross-sectional survey strips in the survey area are accompanied by
the establishment of additional survey control points for planimetric control and all
planimetric features are prominent and visible such as buildings, rock revetments,
groynes, drains, roads / tracks, culverts, hydraulic structures, fences, electric /
telephone poles, trees, rock outcrops, beach slopes. The level of road reduction and
existing reverse roads were also studied. The topographic and planimetric survey
boundaries are 100 metres from the high-water line to land or erosion along the
shoreline area for the survey area. However, this survey does not extend to gated
private property.

iv. Spot levels were taken at a distance of not more than 20 metres along the survey
area and at closer intervals there were significant value changes. Investigation of
planimetric features such as roads, drains, sea walls, revetments, coastal slopes, and
structures etc. traversed by profiles is given attention so that these f eatures can be
demonstrated in the survey area.

a) Control Survey
Control survey is one of type for survey method that consist of works on establishing
a control point to the area of in term for vertical and horizontal position of points. This
method used to provide the standards of accuracy for subsequent and subordinate
method of survey to attain. Also, this survey method used to correct the planimetric
alignment to be add into other supplementary surveys which used as adjustment. For
this project, there are two type of control survey perform on research area.

i. Horizontal Control Survey

To establish horizontal control, the method used were based on concept of Base and
Rover (RTK Fixed). The position of fix point got from known point and transit with
the satellite by the concept RTK Fixed. The horizontal control establishes for the
topographic survey to collect the details and for Underground Utility Mapping to
control the planimetric of research area also for preparation for Right of Way. For
topographic survey, there have main traverse and sub-traverse that must cover all area
alongside routes by group and lastly combine all the detail to overlay with another
group.

ii. Vertical Control Survey

For vertical control survey, the method used to transfer the height for Benchmark
(BM) was GNSS levelling where this requires for application of GPS instrument.
The method use GNSS was Static Method where the GPS measured from Base at
BM to transfer the heights to Rover which on place of new TBM. The purpose of this
vertical control is to provide height control to area to be observed for topography
survey purposes.

2
3.5.4 Calibration and Field check
a) GPS Instrument
i. Zero Baseline Test.
Zero baseline test should be performed to ensure the correct operation of the receivers,
antennas, cabling, and software.

 The test shall be carried out by connecting two (2) GPS receivers to the same
antenna, using an antennacable-splitter appropriate for the brand of
receiver/antenna (as recommended by the GPS manufacturer).
 The test shall be used to verify the precision of the receive measurements (and
hence its correct operation), as well as validate the data processing software.
 Zero baseline test should be performed before any GPS survey activity is carried
out.

 The test may be carried out any place where it is convenient but should be carried
out at a site with at least90% sky visibility.
 The test should be performed for a minimum of ten (10) minutes observation
session, with at least 15 seconds recording interval.
 The receivers should track at least five (5) satellites during the test session with a
GDOP of less than six(6).
 Cut-off angle of fifteen degrees (15°) should be applied during the baseline
processing.

 The resulting (computed) slope distance between the two (2) receivers being tested
must be less than three

(3) millimeters. If this tolerance is not met the test should be repeated or the
equipment sent to the GPSagent for further testing.
 The test should be applied twice, for both antennas.

2
ii. EDM baseline test

An EDM baseline test should be performed to ensure the correct operation of a pair of
GPS receivers and dataprocessing software that will be used for baseline measurement.

 The GPS instrumentation shall be tested on an EDM baseline that itself has
been calibrated to a localstandard of distance using a special a high quality EDM
instrument.
 The test shall be used to study the precision of the receiver measurements (and
hence its correct operation),as well as validate the data processing software.

 EDM baseline test should be performed on a six-monthly basis or prior to any

large survey campaign beingcarried out.

 The test should be carried out at an established EDM baseline test site, by
occupying pillars with at least90% sky visibility.
 The GPS receivers should be tested against the established EDM baseline lengths
(between pillars),varying from twenty (20) meters to about one (1) kilometer.
 Each GPS receiver is to be connected to its designated antenna (mounted on
the pillar) using the sameantenna cable used during surveys.
 The test should be performed for a minimum of ten (10) minutes observation
sessions.

 The receivers shall track at least five (5) satellites during the test session with
a GDOP of less than six (6).

 Cut-off angle of fifteen degrees (15°) should be applied during the baseline
processing.

 The resulting difference in slope distance between the GPS measurement and
the standard must be lessthan ten (10) millimeters. If this tolerance is not met the
test should be repeated, and if the equipment fails again the instrument should be
returned to the GPS agent for repair.

2
iii. GPS Network Test
A network test should be performed to assure the operation of the GPS
instrumentation for the purpose of determining high accuracy relative coordinates.

 The GPS instrumentation must be tested on part of the established high order
geodetic network. The network should include a minimum of three (3) existing
First Order GPS Control stations.
 The network test should be carried out on an annual basis, or when the receiver's
firmware or post- processing software is upgraded to a new version. In the latter
case, the test should include the Zero BaselineTest and EDM Baseline Test.
 The network test could be carried out over several GPS observation sessions. More
than one pair of GPS equipment could be used at the same time.
 The test should be carried out on a station network with at least 90% sky visibility.
 The network test should be carried out using the Static positioning method, with at
least two (2) hours observation sessions. All other recommended procedures
should be followed.
 The receivers shall track at least five (5) satellites during the observation session
with a GDOP of less than six (6).
 Cut-off angle of fifteen degrees (15°) should be applied during the baseline
processing.

 The minimally constrained network adjustment should be carried out using the
computed baselines expressed in the WGS84 datum.
 The final coordinates should be given in the established local system.

 The maximum allowable discrepancy between the surveyed coordinates

(observed GPS values) and thetrue coordinates (established values) for the
network test must be less than ten (10) millimeters in the horizontal component or
relative accuracy of better than a + bL millimeters (a=5mm, b=2ppm, L= baseline
length n kilometers), and less than twenty (20) millimeters in the vertical
component. If this tolerance isnot met, the surveyor will be required to validate
the results by repeating the test again.

2
3.5.5 Methodology and Fieldwork
a) Site visit / Reconnaissance
Site Visit is required before starting a job to determine the location and scope of work
provided.

b) Preparatory of Work
Provision of work which includes workers and third-party insurance to protect
themselves and their equipment while carrying out survey work for this project. In
addition, obtain site-specific information such as previously measured topographic
measurement plans and term of reference provided by the JKR. Additional information
from the Jabatan Teknikal such as topographic data and digital cadastral data (lot
number, bearing, distances, benchmark level and coordinates) is required.

c) Control Survey
At very beginning of any survey activities, a control or datum must be established to
ensure the subsequent surveys like Topography and Utility Mapping survey data were
adjusted according to existential value points of area and preserved the high-quality
standard of output data. Procedure for carry out the control may consist of two types of
control to be perform.

i. Horizontal Control Survey

By using GPS equipment, the field procedure performed as below:

 Placement of control station or points baselines must be less than 30 kilometers

in length but longer than 50 meters apart.
 For observation, two or more receivers are considered. This observation was
using carrier phase only.

2
 This observation must be carried out in Static Mode with minimum observation
periods of 60 minutes.

 For setting up, GPS equipment shall be placed at point where sky coverage
was at least 60% with antenna poles set up to 10m being allowed.
 By using remotes, provide checking on satellite geometry where at least
minimum of five (5) must viewed for both receivers for entire observations.
The elevation mask should not be less than 15°. Then, measurement rate
recommended to be 30 second or faster.
 All points to be surveyed must include two independent baselines form two or
more of First Order GPS geodetic controls stations or a minimum of one
proven Cadastral Reference Mark. The new points shall be established.

Figures 3.3: process of using GNSS system.

2
ii. Vertical Control Survey
For vertical control, method use is GNSS Levelling where surveyor use this method to transfer
height from nearby Benchmark (BM) to site area to establish temporary benchmark (TBM) for
use in Topography and Detail survey. For this project, surveyor required in monumenti ng the
TBM as requested by clients. The field procedures for levelling were stated as below.

 On this levelling procedure, method was used is GNSS levelling. The starting
position will be atBenchmarks (BM) where has known value of reduced level. To
transfer heights must consist of at least
(2) two or more Benchmark use for data integrity.

 By using static method, carried out the observation prior to 60 minutes of observation
periods.

 For setting up, GPS equipment shall be placed at point where sky coverage was at
least 60% withantenna poles set up to 10m being allowed.
 By using remotes, provide checking on satellite geometry where at least minimum
of five (5) mustviewed for both receivers for entire observations. The elevation mask
should not be less than 15°
 All points to be surveyed must include two independent baselines form two
or more of established Benchmark. The class levelling must achieve 1 st Order
with Permissible Discrepancy 0.003√K mm. K
= Distance of baselines.

3
d) Topography and Detail Survey
After establish datum or control, Surveyor proceed on performing topography and
detail survey to the area. For this survey, method used is Real-Time Kinematic where
GPS instrument are used. This method used to provide coordinates and height of
unknown points based on Base receivers through communication link. Procedure of
survey stated as below:

 For starter, the Base receiver were placed at control point where have been
established its owncoordinate and heights. The Rover were handheld by
surveyor use for collecting the points.
 Surveyor set up the Base at the point with proper height while Rover was
attaching to GPS pole withcontroller. Both heights were measured.
 Surveyor perform the setting using the controller to both receivers.

 Proceed to survey while using rover and controller.

 Surveyor placed the rover on top of point for features and collecting the point
by using controller andlabel it according to the code.
 This process repeated until all features and points necessary were collected.
The data store in controllerwhich be later transfer to technical unit.

3.7.6 Final Products
In this project, we have produced two (2) plans which is Land Survey Datum and Chart
Datum. For Land Survey Datum is usually used to vertical datum from established BM.
For Chart Datum, there are red areas in plan which is referring to dangerous areas for
boat routes. There are three (3) plans for LSD and three (3) plans for CD. It is because the
scales for the following plans are additional then separated and divided into 3 plans.

The result of the surveys is in survey plans and they are:

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

4.1 Overall General Comments.

During industrial training courses, student had learned a lot of new things relating
to engineering survey. For such, topography survey was considered a well experience
and practical work that student had done because they learned a lot about the
procedure on carry out the surveys and data processing in more deeply understand
better than back in UiTM. This provides a genuine positivity to our learning and
knowledge in this field. Student also learned a lot about working environment in
professional area. This might a lot educate and discipline in time management and
responsibility. The survey team and staff at Jurukur Hikmah was very cooperative in
the site and office as they unremitting in provide guidance and taught to student so
they can be truly professional workers without fails. However, due to current situation
of Covid 19 pandemic that occur in Malaysia, the practical session had quite
disturbance and because of that training period of student at the company were shorten
from schedules.

4.2 Overall General Suggestion.

i. The first suggestion to this AP120 courses is to add more or new study
material focusing on engineering survey
ii. The second suggestion is to faculty. Please upgrade the facilities and
equipment at UITM so that student can learned properly without having
a minor issue about the equipment that may disturb their process of
learning.
iii. The third suggestion consist of advising to lecturer to educate the
student onto true current fieldwork practice and method also involve
many fieldworks related to engineering survey to student so that student
can be more understand the practical of works.
iv. Lastly, suggestion to this program courses is to add extra courses for
student in earlier semester in experiencing professional fieldwork
practice.

4.3 Conclusion of Project

From this project, we conclude that research and observation achieve its objective
required successfully. The objective is to provide all the necessary data and information
required for undertaking the engineering design for Topography Survey - Construction
of New Jetty and Completing Other Related Works Project in Gua Langsir Kilim Karst
Geoforest Park, Mukim Ayer Hangat, Langkawi, Kedah. At the seashore, the
acquisition of data consists of collection on shoreline along the beach. This is important
to get the accurate shape at the beach because it required by job specification from Gua
Langsir to cover the area of. From the work carried out and, we can successfully
complete this project and meet the requirements of the Jabatan Kerja Raya Malaysia
which include rules and regulations when carrying out this work.
