Types of FEVER:

Intermittent fever- This fever has a fluctuating baseline between normal temperatures and fever levels
over the course of the day.

Remittent fever- This type of fever may come and go, and temperature fluctuates, but though it falls, it
never falls all the way back to normal.

Hectic fever- Either an intermittent or a remittent fever is considered hectic if the temperature range
swings widely throughout the day, with a difference of at least 1.4 degrees Celsius between the highest
and lowest temperatures

Continuous fever- Also called a “sustained” fever, this is a prolonged fever with little or no change in
temperature over the course of a day.

Relapsing- This is a type of intermittent fever that spikes up again after days or weeks of normal
temperatures. This type of fever is common with animal bites and diseases like malaria.

Based on Duration of Fever

Acute- less than 7 days (ex. malaria, viral)
Subacute- up to 2 weeks (ex. Typhoid fever)
Chronic- greater than 2 weeks (ex. TB)

Based on Height on Temperature

Mild/low grade fever – 100.5-102.2 *F (38-39 degree C)

Moderate grade fever- 102.2-104.0 (39-40)
High grade fever- 104.1-106.0 (40.05-41)
Hyperpyrexia- >106.0 (>41 degree C)

Warning Signs of Fever

Temperature >103oF
Shortness of breath
Mental clouding
Persistent headache
Fever does not subside in 48 hrs

Hypertensive emergency Vs H. Urgency

Hypertensive emergencies are characterized by evidence of impending or progressive target

organ dysfunction, whereas hypertensive urgencies are those situations without progressive target
organ dysfunction.
Fever of unknown origin (FUO) is defined as fever at or above 101°F (38.3°C) for 3 weeks or more that
remains undiagnosed after 3 days of in-hospital testing or during two or more outpatient visits.

A newborn's head is usually about 2 cm (0.78 inch) larger than the chest size. Between 6 months and 2
years, both measurements are about equal. After 2 years, the chest size becomes larger than the head.
