ABSTRACT OF PRESENTATION

Metro railway is considered as lifeline for development of any city. Almost every
developing city in our country is currently planning to construct tunnels and
underground structures for rails, roads, metros, subways and other utilities as well
as sustainable development of the city. An underground metro rail project should
be planned and designed in such way that it can provide a socially, economically,
and environmentally sustainable transportation network. The design of tunnels and
underground structures should be done with realistic assumption and actual site-
specific considerations of design parameters like site geotechnical data, water
table, surcharge load etc. It is a well-known fact that over conservative approaches
provide uneconomical and unrealistic situations. This presentation will cover two
project specific case studies of underground metro structures.
