Sport should be all about fair play. But is it? What
do some famous sports celebrities, like Diego
Maradona, Lance Armstrong, and Boris Onischenko
have in common? Well, they have all played their own
dishonest roles during large, international sporting
events. Diego Maradona,an Argentinian player, scored
a goal using his hand during the 1986 World Cup.
Lance Armstrong lost all of his seven Tour de France
medals after a scandal about using illegal drugs. And
Boris Onischenko, who wanted to be sure of winning
the gold medal during the 1976 Olympic Games,
changed his fencing equipment so that he was scoring
points without actually hitting his opponent. He was
caught and banned from the sport.

Unfair behaviour is, unfortunately, becoming more
and more common in sport. It may come in the form
of using illegal equipment or steroids, breaking
international rules, or it might even involve dishonest
referees. Unfortunately for millions of football fans,
their beloved discipline is at the top of the list, with
lots of examples of ‘unfair play’ during almost every
game.

Hi,
I’m a big fan of football and I support the local
football team in my city. Last weekend, I went
to the stadium with my friends to watch the match
live. I don’t go to see matches as often now as I used
to, so I was really looking forward to the game.
When we arrived at the stadium, the atmosphere
was great and we were really enjoying ourselves. But
from the start of the match, the dirty play was really
awful. The players from both teams were quite brutal,
and three of them got red cards from the referee.
Worse than that, one of the players scored a goal with
his hand. Everybody at the stadium could see this,
but the referee still gave the goal. After that, I was
really disappointed, not with the score (our team
lost the game) but with the fact that the match had
very little to do with real sport. I mean, it’s OK if you
want to win, but isn’t it more important to be a fair
competitor? Unfortunately, as such things happen
at big international events, local sports competitions
won’t be free from cheating too.
