Lesson: Rectilinear motion: Calculation of velocity, acceleration and displacement using the
displacement-time graph and the velocity - time graph

1. Displacement-time graphs: gradient = velocity

1.1 A car is traveling at a steady speed along a straight road. In 10 s the car has traveled 500 meters.

a Sketch a displacement-time graph to represent the motion of the car.

b From the gradient of the graph, deduce the car’s speed in m s-1.

1.2 A man walks along a straight path The displacement and time is given below:

Displacement / m 0 25 50 75 55 35
Time / s 0 10 20 30 40 50

a Draw a displacement-time graph for the journey.

b Use the graph to find the two velocities of the man and indicate the direction of the velocities.
