I. Title: Technical Terms in Research

II. Most Essential Learning Competency:

The most essential learning competency in this learning activity sheet is

distinguishing technical terms used in research (EN10VC-IVb-15).

III. General Instructions: Welcome to English 10, Quarter 4-Week 1 on Technical

Terms in Research!
This activity sheet intends to develop your skills in writing while exposing
you with contents that align with research. The activities designed for you allow
you to think freely, explore ideas actively, and read other learning resources
independently to advance your skills in academic writing.
Furthermore, the activity sheet enables you to distinguish technical terms
used in research. One of the complex tasks in the field of academic writing is
writing a research paper. It is therefore timely and relevant to identify different
technical terms in research and determine how these could be applied in writing an
effective research so as to gain success in future academic tasks.

IV. Activities:

A. WORD SEARCH. Copy the word puzzle on a separate sheet of paper or in

your activity notebook. Beneath the puzzle are incomplete sentences. With
the use of context clues and beginning letters of the mystery words, find the
words in the word puzzle by searching vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.

terms that you need to be familiar with in research.
B. TECHNICAL TERMS UNLOCKED
Copy the table below in another sheet of paper. Using any resource,
a dictionary or an e-dictionary in your android phones, unlock the
denotative meanings of the words listed in the 1st column from the given
definitions in the 2nd column. Draw a line to connect each term to its
corresponding definition.

TERMS DEFINITIONS
1. Title A. announces what your topic is about, and provides
context and rationale for your work
2. Abstract B. interprets and describes the significance of your
findings and of what you already know about the
problem.
3. Introduction C. surveys scholarly articles, books, and other
sources relevant to a particular area of research.
4. Literature D. a section of research paper where you report the
Review findings of your study based upon the information.

5. Methodology E. a system of methods used in a particular area of

study
6. Results F. summarizes the main idea/ideas of your study
7. Discussion G. systematic description of books, their authorship,
printing, publication, editions and is arranged
alphabetically
8. Conclusion H. a brief summary of research article, thesis, and
reviews to help the reader quickly find out the paper’s
purpose
9. Reference I. the use of sources of information in order to
ascertain something
10. Bibliography J. intends to help the readers understand why the
research should matter to them after reading the
paper

C. STRAIGHT TO THE CONCEPTS

The following are few of the basic research terminologies. With reference on
this, analyse the excerpts of the given parts of a research proposal titled,
“Higa-onon Speech Community: A Sociolinguistic Case Study” by Leilane
Mae B. Manpatilan and name each part. Choose your answer from the pool
of research terminologies.
1. Research. It is a systematic and scientific, controlled, orderly and
objective investigation to develop, refine and expand body of
knowledge.
2. Abstract. It is a clear, concise summary that communicates the
essential information about the study.
3. Concept. It refers to a mental idea of a phenomenon. It is a word or
term that symbolizes some aspects of reality.
4. Conceptual Framework. This refers to interrelated concepts or
abstractions that are assembled together in some rational scheme by
virtue of their relevance to a common theme.
5. Hypothesis. It is a statement of the predicted relationship between two
or more variables in a research study; an educated or calculated
guess by the researcher.
6. Literature Review. A critical summary or research on a topic of
interest, generally prepared to put a research problem in context.
7. Limitations/Scope and Delimitation. Restrictions in a study that may
decrease the credibility and generalizability of the research findings.
8. Research setting. The study setting is the location in which the
research is conducted.
9. Reliability. This is the degree of consistency or accuracy with which an
instrument measures the attributes it is designed to measure.
10. Analysis. It is a method of organizing, sorting, and scrutinizing data
in such a way that research question can be answered.

EXCERPT 1.

The study tries to prove that the Higa-onon language is gradually becoming
out of use due to acculturation with the Cebuano Visayan language.
This research uses some linguistics theories namely, Social Interactionist
Theory by Vygotsky and Bruner; and Internal and External Forces in Language
Change by Yang.
Language acquisition is the process by which humans acquire the capacity
to perceive, produce and use words to understand and communicate. Most of the
concepts and theories we do have explaining how native languages are acquired go
back to the approaches put forward by researches such as Skinner, Chomsky,
Piaget, and others.
Vygotsky’s social interaction theory incorporates nurture arguments in that
children can be influenced by their environment as well as the language input
children receive from their caregivers. Although the theories of Skinner, Chomsky
and Piaget are all very different and very important in their own contexts, they
don’t necessarily take into account the fact that children don’t encounter language
in isolation. The child is a little linguist analyzing language from randomly
encountered adult utterances.
EXCERPT 2.

This study was conducted to the Higa-onon settlers of Poblacion, Esperanza,

Agusan del Sur. This area in Esperanza is inhabited by different ethnicity with
Cebuano
Visayan is the major language used. This study only covers the observation
of the Higa-onon speech community of all age brackets in that particular area. It
doesn’t include the Higa-onons in Salug area since the settlers there are deemed to
be more immersed in the unadulterated Higa-onon culture thus, language change
is minimal.

EXCERPT 3.

Redfield, Linton, and Herskovits (1936) said that acculturation occurs when
group of individuals from different culture come into continuous contact with each
other, and subsequently, there are changes in the original cultural patterns of
either or both groups.
Redfield et al. (1936) were clear about the importance of “continuous first-
hand contact” between individuals of different cultures as the essential ingredient
of acculturation. These authors also pointed out that change in cultural patterns is
essential for at least one of the two groups in contact; however, Redfield et al. held
that acculturation did not imply that assimilation would ensue automatically.
Nearly 20 years later, another group of social scientist under the auspices of the
Social Science Research Council expanded on the Redfield et al. (1936) model of
acculturation by adding a psychological dimension to the process of acculturation.
Their definition stated that acculturative change may be the consequence of direct
transmission; it may be derived from non-cultural causes, such as ecological or
demographic modifications induced by an impinging culture; it may be delayed, as
with internal adjustments following upon the acceptance of alien traits or patterns;
or it may bear active adaptation of traditional modes of life. Its dynamics can be
seen as the selective adaptation of value systems, the processes of integration and
differentiation, the generation of developmental sequences, and the operation of
role determinants and personality factors. (Social Science Research Council, 1954,
p. 974).
D. HD CLASH (HONESTY VS. DISHONESTY)
Academic honesty is an essential virtue that an academic writer must
possess. Read each situation below and evaluate whether it is an act of honesty or
dishonesty in the academic field. Write H if the act shows academic honesty and
write D if it reveals dishonesty. Write your answer on your paper.

H or D SITUATION
A student…
1. submits the same paper to two teachers without the knowledge of
both.
2. copies a paragraph from a source, uses quotation marks, and
neglects to cite the source.
3. changes the structure of copied sentences from a source, and cites
the source of the sentences.
4. forgets the original source of the copied material, and creates a
fictional author’s name.
5. copies the passage verbatim, encloses it in quotation marks, and cites
the source.
6. grabs a photo from the internet, includes it in the submitted work,
and fails to cite the source.
7. uses another concept from a source, rephrases the idea, and provides
proper citation.
8. purchases an essay from the internet, and submits it to the
professor.
9. paraphrases a passage completely, and claims it as hers.
10. asks a family member to write her class requirements, and submits
it to the professor.
