HISTORY OF MARRIOTT INTERNATIONAL

Marriott International, Inc. is an American multinational


company that operates, franchises, and licenses lodging
including hotel, residential, and timeshare properties. It is
headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland. The company was
founded by J. Willard Marriott and his wife Alice Marriott.

Marriott Corporation was founded by John Willard Marriott in
1927 when he and his wife, Alice Marriott, opened a root beer stand
in Washington, D.C. As Mormon missionaries in the humid summers
in Washington, D.C., the Marriotts were convinced that what
residents of the city needed was a place to get a cool drink. The
Marriotts later expanded their enterprise into a chain of Hot
Shoppes restaurants. In 1953, Hot Shoppes, Inc. became a public
company via an initial public offering.
The company opened its first hotel, the Twin Bridges Motor Hotel, in
Arlington, Virginia, on January 16, 1957. It cost $9 per night, plus an
extra $1 for every person that was in the car.[11] Its second hotel, the
Key Bridge Marriott in Rosslyn, Arlington, Virginia, was opened in
1959 and is Marriott International's longest continuously operating
hotel.
Hot Shoppes, Inc. was renamed the Marriott Corporation in 1967.
In 1976, the company opened two theme parks: California's
Great America and Six Flags Great America.
Currently more than 30 brands are owned by Marriott
International and it is the 3rd largest hotel chain in the world.

Housekeeping department is the most important department of the hotel which


deals with the cleanliness and hygiene of the property and especially during the
covid times the importance of this department. The Housekeeping Department
not only cleans the room and prepares it on timely basis but also cleans and
maintain everything in the property so that the property looks neat and
attractive.
JW Marriott Kolkata is a 281 room property that includes 87 suite rooms and 1
presidential suite room with state of the art facilities. The Amenities of the rooms
include wireless internet access, iron board, safe locker ,Television with
International channels, tea-coffee making machines and a mini bar. Due to the
covid 19 Pandemic there are a few changes brought in the room amenities section
like there are contact less IRD menu with QR code, holy books and stationeries
are provided only on guest requests and minimum number of towels are

during this pandemic era.

JW Kitchen is the all-day dinning restaurant of our hotel. It serves


variety of cuisine like the Indian , Continental, Chinese and
European cuisine. It is a 180 cover coffee shop.This restaurant have
also got small bar attached to it. The current outlet manager of JW
Kitchen is Mr. Bijayan Bose.

Front office deals in accommodating guest in the hotel and is a


very important department. It is an essential because it deals with
a location of room, which is a major income of hotel. The way in
which a receptionist deals with the guest has d direct impact on
the guest. Front Office is one department, which deals with guest
directly. A receptionist, with his/her salesmanship can induce the
guest to stay at the hotel and in this way, it increases the revenue
the of the hotel.
The FRONT OFFICE as the name signifies deals with the
activities of the “Front of the House”. As the Front Offices is the
first department that the guest comes into contact with, so it is
through this department that the guest forms his/her opinion
about the hotel. So, the staff should be aways on their very best
when dealing with the guest.
The front office department consists of group of brilliant, efficient
and ever smiling staff that resemble and focus the organization in
the initial seconds of the guest contact, giving him the feeling of
the best in the Hospitality
movement that have
engulfed the modern human
Generation. The front office
department motivated
workforce strives to achieve
the highest eve of
performance in meeting the
need of the guests.

With their traditional


commitment to serve, the staff strives endlessly to ensure total
guest satisfaction and loyalty. Sothis is the feelings which make a
whole world of difference.
The person at the reception carries the perpetuation of the hotel
with him. They take down the Check INS of the guests and
groups. They hand over the keys to the guest too. The first thing
done by an assistant is to check whether the guest has a
reservation or not. In case he is not shown any reservation and
the guest is a walk in then the guest can be straight away refused
in case he is suspected of any untoward thing. In case the guest
has a booking then a registration card is given to him to f up
boards. The require details. (The card attached along with the
page for every details. Then the guest is handed over the key to
his room, which the assistant checks on his room, which the
assistant checks on his computer and allots.
The bellboy then leads the guest away to his room. Then the
assistant enters the details of the card into his computer. An
identification number is given to the guest who is written down on
the registration card. Then the rate is checked in the computer
and after everything is ascertained then the entry is made in the
guest arrival register.
‘First Impression is the last impression.’ The first department
with guest comes in contact. Front office department is just one of
the departments, working towards the satisfaction of the guest.
For a hotel ‘Room Sold Revenue’. Room is the major operating
revenue producing department. It covers 80-85) of hotel revenue
& amp; does not need investment frequently.

CONCIERGE / BELLDESK/ TRAVELDESK/


INFORMATION:
The major function of this section is to take care of the guest’s luggage

and their belongings and guide the guest to their respective rooms

carrying their baggage, coats etc. till guest room. They are responsible

for the guest luggage during check-in and check-out and are a so

responsible for providing newspaper in the morning.

This section is a way in the public eye and usually are the first line

of customer service for a lodging property. Their attitude and

behaviour greatly influence the public's impression of the

establishment. Luggage is one of its prime concerns. The section

performs a variety of duties: carrying guests' items to and from

automobiles, loading and navigating a luggage cart, escorting guests to


their rooms and explaining rooms' features, organizing and storing

luggage in the rooms' designated areas, answering questions and

offering assistance.
Not only this, this particular section has the information regarding the
hotel and hotel policies. Any information that comes via mail or any
other source is thoroughly checked by the department. As we
informed concierge staff will keep the guests happy, and that will
bring back repeat business. It will a so encourage guests to refer their
friends which helps the business grow. When the businesses that the
concierge uses are happy, they will a so refer their clients and bring in
even more guests to the hotel. It's a win-win situation a around.
he basic task of a concierge is to serve as the guest’s liaison with both
hotel and non-hotel services. In a sense, the function of a concierge is
an extension of the function of a front desk agent A concierge must be
resourceful and knowledgeable about the hotel and the surrounding
community. Regardless of whether concern in-hotel or of premises
attractions, facilities, services, or activities, a concierge specializes in
providing assistance to guests

 HOUEKEEPING - Both Front office and Housekeeping are


concerned with rooms. The form with letting the rooms &
atter with preparation of room. For this is to be done efficiently
department. The housekeeping informs the front office about the
occupancy thrice a day. It a so informs about room change being
done out of order rooms, rooms taken for re-decoration. Which
helps in smooth functioning of Front office and sale of room
without delay.
 SECURITY - Co-operation here is mainly concerned with
prevention of free theft and safe keeping the property.
 TELEPHONE - Reception and information assistant after
receiving any request for wake up call, pass is on to telephone
operator department keeps the Front Office posted with the
information regarding any STD, ISD or personal case made by the
guests of various rooms so that the Front office cashier can do the
posting the guest genera accounts.
 ACCOUNTS - There is a close co-operation between Front
Office cashier and lobby staff. The receptionist informs
cashier about walk-in or scanty baggage and ask him to take
an imprint of credit card of cash in advance. Be caption fees
cashier about our so the he can prepare the bill for
presentation.
 SALES - Sales & Front Office department co-ordinate on
management eve in improving the rooms sale on earn
occupancy days. Sales department sets the rates corporate
companies that are corporate and the meal plan rates, which
is sent to the reservations.

different F & B outlet about the group arrival in advance.

3.Indian Section- This section mainly deals with the production of Indian food
like Yellow dal, Dal Tadka , Biryani etc.

tandoori breads, tandoori chicken et6c
5.Halwai Section- This section mainly deals with the making of sweets like gulab
jamun, gajar ka halwa etc.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
EXECUTIVE CHEF/ CHEF DE CUISINE:
 He is responsible for overall smooth and efficient functioning
of the kitchen as a whole.
 Ensures that prescribed recipes and standards are followed.
 Responsible for quality control, improving standards and
innovation.
 Co- ordination with the departments and section of the
kitchen.
 Attend the morning meetings and perform administrative
duties for the section.
 Prepare the duty roasters.
 Authorizers the formats.
 He is a so authorized for granting eave to personnel in his
own section.

EXECUTIVE/JUNIORSOUSCHEF:
 The sous chef is responsible for his particular department
which may very e.g., pastry, garden manger.
 He issues a duty register for his department and hands over
duty sand responsibilities for the staff working under him.
 The sous chef is answerable to the executive chef and Human
Resource has to keep the functioning of his particular up to
date.
 He sanctions overtime and eave for the personnel in his
department.

CHEFDEPARTE:
 Ensures that the food items are picked up time y and checks
portion control.
 Takes over the duties of jr. sous chef in his absence.
 Prepare the storeroom requisition.
 Ensure the proper storage of raw materials.

cutting and doing mis-en-place.

SUMMARY
It all started with the interviews. This was a very tough period for me, as I
was going to undergo interviews for the first time in my life. I sat for JW
MARRIOTT KOLKATA and fortunately I got selected at the particular
hotel. But as JW MARRIOTT was close to my city, I chose it. My training
schedule was from 4th October 2021 to 23rd January, 2022, overall, 4
months. The initial training period was tough and difficult to get adjusted
to the work scenario. After some days I got addicted to work. I experienced
many new things in life. The training period was a turning point in my
life where I got to earn many new things in life. I got to earn most of
the things of the departments, types of services which are availed in
hotel and a lot many things. Working with new people was not so
difficult I got friendly with them and earned a lot many new things.
During these 4 months I completely changed me to be a hotelier and a
so gained a lot of confidence. I got to know the meaning of hard work.
My whole training period was wonderful. I got to deal with skilled and
experienced staff members who were very supportive both in getting
the work done and providing information. Working with experienced
staff has helped me a lot in earning how to get the maximum work done
in short period of time. Working with them even made me value
manpower and time. My whole training period has made me more
confident about my communication skills as I was in constant contact
with the guest, seniors and other staff members.
This training has made me see the Hotel Industry in its true light. It
has made me realize that Hotel Industry is much more than just fun &
pleasure; it’s a lot of hard work. Once again I would like to thank a the
people who gave me an opportunity to fee the Hotel Industry so closely
and even those who helped me through my whole training period.

CONCLUSION
My training at JW Marriott Kolkata have completely changed my life, it have
helped me to grow personally as well as professionally but more than that this
training period have made me more disciplined, perseverant and patient
towards my life.
I enjoyed a lot while learning and gaining knowledge about the industry in this
time span. I felt independent, matured , responsible and realized my decision
making power.
The aim of my training was to get as much as industry knowledge in this short
span of time and I believe that JW Marriott Kolkata have helped me the most to
gain the practical knowledge about this industry.
I would like to end my SWE project with a big thank you to all of my mentors
who have helped me so much in this period of 4 and a half months and helped
me to complete my first step as a hotelier.
