COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course enables students to develop an understanding of mathematical concepts related to

introductory algebra, logarithm, measurement and geometry through investigation, theory of
functions, trigonometry and hands-on activities. Students will investigate real-life examples to
develop various representations of linear relations, and will determine the connections between
the representations. Students will consolidate their mathematical skills as they solve problems
and communicate their thinking.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The key aim of the course is to fill the gaps in mathematical foundations of the students coming
from the rural educational background with weak high school and college mathematics. The
second key objective of the course is to initiate a cultural transition to the rigorous development
of fundamentals of mathematics required for the undergraduate level. Moreover, to provide and
secure foundations for higher mathematics courses
Course Outcomes
At the end of modules, you should be able to:

1. Develop understanding of basic kinds of numbers like integers, rational, irrational and
real numbers
2. Demonstrate proficiency in the language of sets and do some of its real world
applications;
3. Formulate and solve the system of linear and nonlinear equations.
4. Demonstrate the existence, non-existence and infinitude of solutions of simultaneous
equations;
5. Workout the surds and indices of various kind of numbers;
6. Develop understanding on logarithm, its key properties
7. Solve the logarithmic equations;
8. Manipulate algebraic expressions involving vectors easily and accurately;
9. Carryout the basic operations of matrix algebra;
10. Determine when a matrix has an inverse, and find it when it exists;
11. Calculate a determinant;
12. Carryout computations of the basics of the co-ordinate geometry like co-ordinate,
computing distance between points and using that to compute the areas and perimeters of
triangles and quadrilaterals.
13. Understand what is means for a function to be one-one and onto, and to have an inverse;
14.  Define, identify trigonometric ratios.
15. Prove the basic trigonometric identities
16. Compute the derivative algebraic, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions.
17. Compute the antiderivatie of derivative algebraic, exponential, logarithmic and
trigonometric functions.
