Singapore. Estates near NTU include Boon Lay, Jurong West, and Jurong East.

You can refer to the NTU website for detailed information about Off-campus housing.

You can either rent an apartment of your own or choose to share a flat or housing unit
with a few others. You can also choose to rent a room in an HDB flat (HDB stands for
Housing Development Board and are government-built housing) or a condominium of
your choice.

TIPS: We suggest you choose a location near campus to save on travelling time. Or you
can choose to stay in a student hostel nearby.

Public & Private Housing (HDB / Condominium)

WHAT ARE HDB FLATS?

Most Singaporeans live in government-built apartments known as HDB (Housing
Development Board) flats. These flats (above) have an average of 100 sqm (1,076 sq
ft) and vary from a simple 1-room apartment to elaborate executive flats.

Where to begin your search?

 Room / apartment availability
 Single vs shared occupancy

9
Post-Graduate Handbook

Viewing / Inspecting Prospective Housing (if you arrive earlier)

 No payment is required to inspect the room/apartment.
 View multiple rooms/apartments to assess better whether a piece of property meets
your requirements.
 Make a list, take notes, and pictures of properties viewed for easier comparison.
 Inspect the room/apartment thoroughly to ensure everything is in good working order.
 Ensure that the owner carries out necessary repairs before you sign the lease.
 Assess noise levels in the day and night to ensure that it is a suitable environment for
sleep and study.
 Clarify all doubts and concerns before you sign the tenancy agreement.

The Tenancy Agreement

The tenancy agreement is a legal agreement designed to protect the rights of the tenant
and landlord by setting out all the terms and conditions of the rental arrangement. Do
research your rights and responsibilities before signing the tenancy agreement and
related documents. Get promises for repairs and improvements in writing before signing
the agreement and placing any deposit. Get a receipt for any money you pay with a
description of what it is for and whether it is refundable.

APPENDIX 1: ABOUT SINGAPORE

Vibrancy in the City

Located in Southeast Asia, Singapore has a land area of about 710 square kilometers,
making her one of the smallest countries globally and the smallest in the region – hence
the moniker “The Little Red Dot”. Although small in size, Singapore commands an
enormous presence in the world today with its free trade economy and highly efficient
workforce. Also, her strategic location in the region has enabled her to become a central
sea port along major shipping routes.

At present, Singapore’s population stands at more than five million people, with English
as the primary language of instruction in schools and a mother tongue for each major
ethnic group. One of the distinct characteristics you will notice on our island is a
ubiquitous collage of cultures. Coming together as a society and living in harmony, there
are four major races: the Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Eurasian. Each community offers
a different perspective of life in Singapore in terms of culture, religion, food, and language.

Being a multi-racial society, Singapore is as diverse as it is cohesive. This is perhaps

best experienced through your encounters with the locals with so much to see and do. if
you are feeling nostalgic and looking to discover old-world charm, you can explore and
experience the island’s key historical landmarks or memorials. You can also embark on
a heritage trail and enjoy the sights and sounds at various cultural precincts, notably
Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam.

If you prefer the bright city lights amidst the hustle and bustle, you will be delighted to
know that there are numerous shopping malls, museums, and dining and entertainment
hotspots to choose from. Get into the thick of shopping action at the iconic Orchard Road
stretch, or party the night away at the Clarke Quay and Boat Quay areas, both of which
offer a myriad of nightlife activities.

Another striking characteristic of Singapore is its multifarious offering of food – day or

night, there will always be something to whet your appetite. With a range of dining options,

33
Post-Graduate Handbook

for example, Peranakan, Chinese, Indian, Malay, fusion, and much more, you will be
spoilt for choice.

Beyond its history, culture, people, shopping, and food, there are many more facets to
Singapore’s thriving cityscape for you to discover. And these can only be experienced as
you immerse yourself in exploring this once fishing village turned into a cosmopolitan city.

This guide has been created to assist you in the auditing and preparing your professional
