Apostles’ Creed
The Apostle’s Creed is the older. It came
from what they called the “Roman Creed”
and basically it summarized what people
thought the Apostles were supposed to
have believed. It’s mentioned in letters
dating from the very early 300s. The
Apostles Creed summarizes the Catholic
faith in twelve articles, and was used as a
baptismal formula in the early Church.
Now it is reserved
for the rosary, and other personal
prayers and for summarizing the faith
in Catechisms. The Apostles’ Creed is
common to all Christian denominations.
The articles of the Apostles’ Creed are
divided into three parts: God the Father and
our Creation. God the Son and our
deliverance. And, God the Holy Spirit and
our sanctification.
Nicenes’ Creed
The two creeds follow
the same structure. They
are both ancient creeds
tracing back to the
origination of the
church. They are both
statements of a belief.
Both are crafted with
the Latin word “creed”
which means “I Believe”.
Both creeds are used to
pray as well as connect
with God.
The Nicene Creed was created to put some
organization into Christianity. In the early
years, people weren’t quite sure what to
believe. If Jesus was the savior, he got
screwed by being killed. So they had to
come up with the idea of the resurrection.
The Nicene Creed is much more detail and
is the result of the Councils of Nicaea and
Constantinople, and has been used at Mass
as a statement of the faith of the Church
since roughly the end of the fourth century.
The Nicene Creed is a more specific and
elaborate statement of the orthodox faith of
the early Christian church in opposition to
certain heresies, especially Arianism. The
Nicene Creed was created in 325 in
reaction to Arianism, originally serving as a
test of the orthodoxy of clergy. It was
expanded at the Ecumenical Council of
Constantinople to be a comprehensive
confession of faith.
