ABSTRACT

In the last few years, automatic knowledge extraction has appeared in the media under the

name of data mining. This is an interdisciplinary approach where we use artificial

intelligence, machine learning and statistics. Data mining is the descendant and arguably the

successor of statistics as it is currently practiced. Statistics and data mining have the same

goal, which is to build models accounting for the relations binding the description of a

situation to a result concerning this description. This paper gives an overview about the role

of statistics and data mining in extracting meaningful information / relevant knowledge from

the underlying data.

Keywords: Knowledge Extraction, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Statistics, Data Mining.
