TITLE: AISI 8630 Mod Alloy Steel, 80 KSI Min Yield Strength

1. Scope:

1.1. This specification shall be utilized in procurement of AISI 8630 modified steel (UNS G86300)
in quenched and tempered condition to 22 HRc maximum hardness.

1.2. These materials meet the requirements of NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for hydrogen sulfide
service.

1.3. This material specification is for components with a requirement of corrosion resistance and is
readily weldable.

1.4. Maximum limiting diameter in the solid heat treated condition shall be 10˝. Material above 10˝
diameter needs to be heat treated in hollow form with maximum wall thickness of 6˝.

3. Requirements:

3.1. Melting:

The material shall be electric furnace melted, vacuum degassed, fine grained alloy steel.

3.2. Chemical Composition: The chemical composition shall satisfy the following requirements.

3.3. Heat Treatment:

3.3.1 The material shall be quenched and tempered to meet the mechanical properties of section 3.4

3.3.2 Heat treating equipment qualification and calibration:

Furnaces shall be calibrated no less than once a year or when a furnace is moved, repaired or
rebuilt. The practice for qualification of heat-treating equipment shall be one of the following:

3.3.2.1 API 6A annex for qualification of heat-treating equipment or other equivalent


internationally recognized standard.

3.3.2.2 Manufacturers’ written specifications including acceptance criteria, which are not less
stringent than the procedures identified above.

3.3.3 Temperature monitoring

The material temperature shall be measured by use of either a contact surface thermocouple
or a heat sink as described in API 6A, ISO 10423 or equivalent international standard.

3.3.4 All heat treatment shall be carried out in accordance with written procedures. Temperature,
time at temperature and method of cooling must be reported for each cycle.

3.3.5 The quench media shall be one of the following:

3.3.5.1 Oil
3.3.5.2 Polymer
3.3.5.3 Interrupted water, water or other water equivalent quench

3.3.6 The temperature of the water or the quench media with cooling rate approximately that of water

shall not exceed 40 C (100 F) at the start of the quench. For bath type quenching, the

temperature of water or equivalent quench media shall not exceed 50 C (120 F) at the
completion of quench.

3.3.7 The temperature range for other quenching media shall meet manufacturer written
specification.

3.3.8 If the heat treatment is carried by sub-supplier, heat treater shall ensure the compliance of
mechanical properties established in section 3.4.

3.4. Mechanical Properties:

The test sample shall be drawn from longitudinal direction. The mechanical properties shall be
measured in accordance with ASTM A370 and shall conform to the following.

3.5. NDE:

Material must be examined by UT after heat treatment as per NDE-31 for solids and as per
NDE-35 for hollows. UT demonstrated by comparable industry standards like ASTM E428,
ASTM A213 (For tubing), ASTM A388 (For solids), API 6A PSL 3, API 5CT, SEP 1921 is
acceptable. Mill UT is acceptable when heat treatment is performed by mill.

3.6. Welding: Welding by the supplying mill is prohibited.

3.7. Material Quality:

3.7.1. The material shall be free of injurious seams, laps, or other visual imperfections, which,
due to their nature, will interfere with the use of the material in machining, or fabrication
of suitable parts.

3.8. Identification and Packing:

Protection shall be provided to prevent mechanical damage during shipment. Grade, Heat number,
heat treat condition shall be clearly marked on individual tube/forge lengths. Other information shall
be provided or marked as required by the purchase order.

3.9. Deviation From Requirements:

All requests for deviation must be submitted to Schlumberger for review and approval by the
engineering department, or directly to the engineer in charge of the project.

4. Documentation And Retention:

Supplier records involving this specification must be auditable / retrievable for a period of five (5)
years from the date that the raw materials were certified. Supplier should submit the necessary
documents from following list along with the certification package.

4.1. Copy of the original mill certificate from the producing mill.

4.2. Copy of actual chemical composition (check analysis) of the material which lists all of the

elements specified in paragraph 3.2.

4.3. Copy of the final heat treat data including temperature, time at temperature and method of
cooling must be reported for each cycle in accordance with paragraph 3.3

4.4. Copy of mechanical properties including impact test results. Test results must meet the
requirements of paragraphs 3.4

4.5. The statement of compliance to ultrasonic testing requirements per paragraphs 3.5

4.6. Statement of compliance from mill or supplier conforming compliance with this specification (by
number) and the Schlumberger Purchase order (by number and line item number).

4.7. All documentation generated by this specification shall be retained in accordance with procedure
QA-31.

5. Authority

5.1. Amending Authority

This document is controlled by Project MatEng. It shall be revised only with the agreement of
technical representatives of all Schlumberger Segments using it.

5.2. Interpretation Authority

Interpretation authority for this document shall reside with the Materials Engineering or Quality
Manager of each Technical Centers using it. No deviation from this specification is permitted
without a waiver approved by Engineering.
