I. Background Information for Learners

Words are grouped together according to the purpose they serve or how they convey meaning. Every
English word performs one of the five functions: naming; expressing; doing, or being; modifying;
connecting; expressing emotions.

One of these functions is under noun or naming. A noun is derived from the Latin word nomen meaning
“name”. It designates or names a person, place, thing, idea, or event.
