Challenges of the Career Management in the context of Bangladesh:

Introduction: Career management is the combination of structured planning and the

active management choice of one's own professional career. Career Management is an umbrella term that
covers Career Planning & Career Development on an individual level or at an organizational level. Career
management also covers talent management, as part of a talent retention strategy. Career management was
first defined in a social work doctoral thesis by Mary Valentich as the implementation of a career strategy
through the application of career tactics in relation to chosen career orientation (Valentich & Gripton, 1978).
Career orientation referred to the overall design or pattern of one's career, shaped by particular goals and
interests and identifiable by particular positions that embody these goals and interests. Career strategy
pertains to the individual's general approach to the realization of career goals, and to the specificity of the
goals themselves. Two general strategy approaches are adaptive and planned. Career tactics are actions to
maintain oneself in a satisfactory employment situation. Tactics may be more or less assertive, with
assertiveness in the work situation referring to actions taken to advance one's career interests or to exercise
one's legitimate rights while respecting the rights of others.

Question 1: What is career and career management? Describe the process of career management?

A career includes all types of employment ranging from semi-skilled through skilled, and semi-professional
to professional. Careers have often been restricted to an employment commitment to a single trade skill,
profession or business firm for the entire working life of a person. In recent years, however, a career now
includes changes or modifications in employment during the foreseeable future.

Career Management is a life-long process of investing resources to accomplish your future career goals. It is
a continuing process that allows you to adapt to the changing demands of our dynamic economy.  The career
management process embraces various concepts:  Self-awareness, career development planning/career
exploration, life-long learning, and networking. Career Management is a life-long process of investing
resources to accomplish your future career goals. It is a continuing process that allows you to adapt to the
changing demands of our dynamic economy.

Components of a career management System:

The key components of a career management system are as follows-

1. Support from top management

2. Periodic assessment of skills and know-how
3. Open enrolment
4. Full involvement of supervisors and managers in the process
5. Coordination with activities related to human resource
6. Using managers from the human resource as consultants
7. Periodic assessment of programs
8. Onus on success
9. Realistic feedback related to career progress

6
Career management process:

The career management process is about investing resources to accomplish your goals and objectives. It
includes several concepts that are described below-

1. Self-awareness

This is the first step in the career management system and provides self-introspection. What are your
interests, what is essential for you, what are the things you value, what are the things you like, what are your
unique skills etc. are some questions that need to be answered in this phase for discovering specific things
about yourself. All these questions are the means to find your values, traits, interests, and skills so that a
person can set his goals for the future.

2. Career exploration/career development planning

The career development planning or career exploration is a recurring process that includes the following
steps –

 Career values – It is essential to integrate work values with overall life values to know what is
necessary for you in life. It is the work values that acts as a guiding force and helps to focus on the
essential things. An individual who is happy and satisfied in personal life will quickly achieve better
productivity. Remember, work values keep on changing at intervals, and it becomes essential to keep
on reassessing them regularly for overall job success.

 Work preferences – Work preferences play a significant role in career development planning. It is a
personal choice, and it is quite natural for two people to have different work preferences in life. Dig
deeper to assess and identify work preferences and, if necessary, take the help of assessment tools for
your purpose.

7
 Strengths – Understand your strengths if you are interested in career exploration/career development
planning. Look for positive qualities like hard-working, detail-oriented, excellent communication
skills, and also specific traits like good at decision making, soft skills, etc. to develop your full
potential. The more specific your abilities and qualities are, the more you will be successful in the job
interviews.

 Weakness – Just like strengths, it is also essential to identify your weakness if you are interested in
career exploration/career development planning. Hiring managers pay special attention to the
weakness of the applicants, and often one of the job interview questions is what do you consider your
weakness. An honest understanding of your weakness will help you in overcoming them in time so
that you are not embarrassed by it at any moment. Do not be overly self-critical as this step is
designed so that a person can call attention to perceived weaknesses and take matters in hand to
eliminate them.

8
3. Lifelong learning

Technology is reigning supreme in all the spheres of our life. All the technical devices like tablets, phones,
and computers have become necessary in the workplace and often determine how we are managing our work
life. Adapt to the ongoing innovations and devices by updating your skills and know-how regularly.

4. Networking

One of the most critical aspects of career exploration/career development planning is effective networking.
It is an essential asset that can take your career a step further. Develop and hone your ability to connect and
interact with important people.

Career management is an ongoing and continuous program that puts its onus on the employees and their
wellbeing. It ensures personal development and growth by developing competencies so that it can lead to the
professional rise and career growth.

Question 2: What the present scenario of career of Bangladesh?

In Bangladesh, doctors and engineers are highly valued as professions due to the high earning potential of
healthcare and engineering jobs. Also, legal professions, banking professions, government jobs, and
teaching are highly valued. We can assume these professions as conventional professions in the context of
Bangladesh.

Type of occupation

Common Occupation:

Doctor: Doctor is one of the most sought after professions in our country. Bachelor of Medicine and
Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S.) degree holders can use the title of doctor as per the policy of Bangladesh
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This degree is just the beginning of the medical profession. After
MBBS, doctors pursue higher degrees in any specialized field of medical science. Eg: Medicine, Neurology,
Gynaecology, Oncology, Gastrology, Cardiology etc.

MBBS degree is awarded from a total of 36 government and 70 private medical colleges recognized by
Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC). To get an opportunity to study in a government medical
college, admission will be through a competitive examination. On the other hand, the cost of education in
private institutions is usually high.

Engineering and Architecture: The popularity of engineering as a career of choice is not new. The number
of people interested in engineering has been increasing for a long time. Engineering is an equally attractive
career for today's youth. Along with engineering, nowadays architecture or architect is also at the top of the
youth's choice list. Currently industries are increasing due to increasing industrial dependence. And as a
result, a large amount of manpower is needed. One of them is Industrial Engineer. There are job
opportunities for people skilled in this profession outside the industries as well. Apart from this, the demand
for mechanical engineering profession has increased a lot now compared to other times. Currently, there are
about 18,000 mechanical engineer vacancies every month in the United States due to lack of qualified
workers.

Banking and Finance Manager: Currently the banking sector is in a good position in the job market. This
profession is in the first line of choice of young people who have just completed their education. Because
10
this profession is considered by everyone as a carefree profession and its future is also very good. The
biggest advantage of banking sector is that career in this sector is considered much more secure. With the
establishment of many private banks in the banking sector, the opportunities for young people in this
profession are increasing. Banking sector has a good working environment along with good pay structure.
Therefore, the youth are now becoming interested in developing themselves for this profession. A financial
manager works to keep the organization financially profitable by monitoring the financial status of an
organization, controlling investments or other financial matters. In today's world, there is a huge demand for
skilled workers in this position in various financial and commercial organizations. However, despite the
demand, the crisis of skilled workers in this field is strong.

Non-Traditional Professions:Apart from doctor, engineer, barrister, some career paths have been
developed lately, in which many are succeeding. Like photography, interior designing, event management,
make-up artist, stylist, career grooming, corporate trainer, public speaker, fashion designing, hotel
management, film making, blogging etc. There is not much opportunity for institutional education in these
subjects in Bangladesh, but practical or practical learning is more necessary than theoretical education in
these subjects. These are becoming very popular professions in Bangladesh day by day.

Alternative Occupation: In education we are rarely told that a career is not just a job. There are many other
career paths like becoming an entrepreneur, freelancer, independent-consultant. If you are an entrepreneur,
you have the freedom to do your own work, so you can create employment for many people. In a country
like Bangladesh, where 47% of the educated population is unemployed, trying to become an entrepreneur
would be a timely decision. Hundreds to thousands of educated children get the opportunity to work in
various institutions established by the youth in Bangladesh.

Question 3: What are the challenges of the Career Management and define those based on
Bangladeshi context?

Many professionals set career goals for themselves, such as positions they want to hold or projects they hope
to complete. Understanding some potential challenges that may affect your career goals can help you
proactively find ways to minimize or eliminate those obstacles to help you reach your goals.
In Bangladesh while a career in management can be fulfilling and lucrative, it comes with its own set of
difficulties and tough moments. It is necessary for managers to know how to deal with these and motivate
their team members to do better and achieve professional success. By understanding the various issues that
managers face in the business environment in Bangladesh , we can decide if a career in management might
suit you. In this article, we discover some of the top management challenges and the ways managers can
overcome them. If you're working toward some goals in your career, you may want to learn how you can
overcome potential challenges successfully. In this article, we list

10 common management challenges in Bangladesh :

Here are some of the most common management challenges in Bangladesh and ways to overcome them:

1. Decreased performance levels:

In a fiercely competitive business environment in Bangladesh, companies of Bangladesh expect their
employees to perform their best and meet their productivity goals. While it is common for employees to go
through periods of time where they are less productive and motivated, there are ways to help them feel
motivated again. If left unresolved, a decrease in productivity can affect the performance of other team
members and overall project goals.

Solution: we can handle management problems related to decreased productivity by regularly monitoring
employee performances. Set clear work targets, implement work processes, assign specific tasks to each
team member and provide constructive feedback if they fall short of the expected performance. We can
analyse the workflow, get to the root of the problem and make necessary adjustments. We may have to
enforce work discipline or restructure the team if performance does not improve. By addressing issues early
on, we can avoid more problems later.

12
2. Hiring skilled employees:
In Bangladesh making the right hiring decisions is crucial for the long-term success of a business. Apart
from the right skills and experience, managers look for people who can fit in with the company culture. The
team can benefit from new employees who can settle in quickly and do not require extensive guidance. A
wrong hiring decision can negatively impact your team's morale. If some employees constantly fail to
handle their assigned tasks, it could affect the :team's overall performance and result in friction within the
team.

Solution: Writing a job advertisement with a detailed work description and skills requirements may help get
the attention of qualified candidates. You can assess the suitability of shortlisted applicants by asking the
right interview questions and having them complete a sample work test. It is also a good idea to seek
professional help from recruitment agencies.

3. Poor communication:
In Bangladesh another challenge that managers face when overseeing teams is ensuring effective
communication. Because every team member has a different personality, there is a chance for
miscommunication from time to time. Communication problems can escalate and affect work relationships
and productivity.

Solution: we can work on your verbal, written and listening skills and make it easy for employees to
approach you with their issues. It can help if we have frequent meetings with employees, set clear work
standards and reiterate project goals. We can also implement a messaging platform for timely and effective
team communication.

4. Poor teamwork:
In Bangladesh a lack of cohesiveness in a team can cause several managerial issues. The team might have
poor communication or face trouble working well together. Some team members may focus more on
completing their specific tasks and less on collaborating with the rest of the team. This can have a
detrimental effect on a project's progress and can even affect the company's long-term business interests.

Solution: To re-establish teamwork, managers can revisit the purpose of a project. We can organize team-
building exercises periodically and demonstrate ways in which team members can work together. Such
events can enable the team members to get to know each other well and improve their relationships.

13
5. Difficult employees:
In Bangladesh dealing with difficult employees is among the top problems that many managers face. Every
manager would prefer a team that gets along well and does its work without creating unnecessary issues.
However, there can be team members who cannot get along socially and professionally with others. They
may be unpleasant to work with and can create a negative, conflict-ridden office environment. Unless the
manager intervenes to stop their behavior, it can harm the team morale and productivity. It can even cause
the top performers to leave the company rather than endure the daily stress.

Solution: It is important to stop a conflict before it creates further concerns. We can have a frank discussion
about it with the feuding parties and other team members to understand the situation. If possible, try to
resolve personal or work-related disputes through mediation. We can remind the employees about the
company's no-tolerance policy regarding disrespectful behavior or bullying. We can make it clear that you
expect them to be professional and civil in the workplace and that they may face disciplinary actions or job
termination if they disregard our directive.

6. Time management:
In Bangladesh managers are in charge of ensuring that the team completes their work on schedule. If the
team falls behind, it might affect other planned schedules and the company's business interests. This can
create stress within the team and lead to poor productivity or work quality. In their rush to finish the project,
the employees might lose their focus and make mistakes, resulting in revisions and more delays.

Solution: We can plan a detailed work schedule at the start of the project, assign tasks and specify
completion deadlines. Make things easier for the team by setting the deadlines several days earlier than the
actual work submission date. That can give the team extra time to check the work and make necessary
changes before finalizing it for the client. We can monitor the work progress during the project and send
friendly reminders to the employees to stay on schedule. If anyone is struggling with their tasks, you can
reassign the work.

7. Performance pressure:
In Bangladesh managers often report to senior executives or directly to clients and may feel the pressure to
improve their work and get more done in less time. They may find it stressful to satisfy their superiors and
follow up with their subordinates. Long work hours, constant pressure to meet deadlines and maintain high
standards can cause excessive stress, anxiety, fatigue and even diseases like high blood pressure and
diabetes.
14
Solution: It may help to have well-structured workdays to stay on schedule. If unexpected issues occur, try
to remain calm and remind yourself that it is normal for everyone to encounter hurdles or make mistakes.
Focus on finding an appropriate solution and inform the senior management and clients about the matter. If
we require work extension or assistance, let them know as soon as possible. They can then make the
necessary arrangements, and we can stop feeling stressed.

Skepticism:
In Bangladesh teams often question the transparency of management when they feel distanced from their
supervisors, especially if certain employees feel like they are doing more work than others. When people
feel they are not part of the plan, their level of trust becomes compromised.

Solution: Clear communication and honest interactions help resolve skepticism in most instances because it
builds trust between an employee and manager. When we delegate tasks, explain why we assigned them and
how it contributes to the overall goal.

9. Retaining high performers

In Bangladesh employees with specialized skills are in demand across industries. It is part of a manager's job
to make an effort to retain these high performers. Otherwise, they are likely to move on to other companies
where they are better appreciated. Staff retention is one of the most pressing issues in management.

Solution: we can pay the high-performing employees what they are worth and let them know how much you
appreciate their contributions to the team and the company. We can incentivize them to remain with the
company by offering rewards, benefits and other perks. It can help if the company has a clear path of career
advancement, offers its employees training programmers to learn new skills and has flexible work options.
10. Firing employees:
In Bangladesh it may become necessary for a company to let go of some of its employees for various
reasons. The company may be downsizing its staff, moving to another location or changing its business
model. It may also decide to dismiss some employees for not meeting work standards or violating the
company policies. The manager is in charge of relaying the news to the concerned employees, and it can be
one of the most challenging parts of their work duties.

Solution: We can call the employee for a one-on-one meeting to break the news. It is never easy to inform
people of impending job loss, but we can tackle the situation better by being a little tactful. If possible, we
15
can suggest other job options within the company or offer to write a recommendation that can help them find
another job. We can call the employee for a one-on-one meeting to break the news. It is never easy to inform

have to own up to their success as well as failure. They cannot dump the blame of their losses on someone
else. Strategic management is an integral part of business management courses that facilitate developing

any time unexpectedly. One must have the courage to face the situation head-on and take corrective

Question 6: What are recommendations and suggestions against the challenges?

A challenge is an obstacle that must be overcome to achieve a goal. When I apply the definition of a
challenge to the workplace, it is a problem that is stopping me from achieving workplace or career success.

Recommendations and Suggestions against the challenges

I will likely face challenges throughout my career, including while searching for a job, starting a new role or
receiving a promotion. Fortunately, there are methods and strategies I can implement to overcome almost
any obstacle, including:

Remain positive:

Staying positive will help me to be motivated and focused on overcoming any challenge, from job
rejections to coworker conflict.

Admit when I need help:

There are times when I will need to ask for help. Whether it is asking a friend to do a mock interview with
me or asking a supervisor for skills training, assistance can help me develop confidence.

Write down a list challenge from all sides:

It is a good idea to consider all aspects of a challenge. Write down a list of all of the possible solutions to a
problem, even the ones that do not seem feasible. I can then choose the solution that seems best from that
list.

Know when to delegate

If I am in a management role, I will need to know when to delegate a challenge to another member of my
team. Not only does delegation help my workload, but it also allows employees to learn new skills and stay
motivated.

Set small goals

Try to divide each challenge into smaller pieces that I can complete instead of trying to do everything at
once. This can assist me in tracking progress and identifying barriers to my project completion.

Challenges after receiving a promotion

I will probably receive promotions throughout my career. In some ways, promotions are much like being a
new hire, since I must become used to new tasks and responsibilities.

Formulate goals

24
Create goals and work toward meeting those goals in my new position to help overcome feelings of
inadequacy. Keep in mind that if I received a promotion, it means that someone recognized my hard work
and has confidence I can succeed in my new role.

Know when to delegate

It can be helpful to compare my previous and current roles and identify the specific tasks I can delegate. As
an employee in a higher position, I may have the ability to delegate some of the time-consuming tasks.

Challenges in a management role

If my career path includes management roles, I may face a new set of demands. Two of the most common
challenges in management roles include having to terminate an employee and not meeting performance
goals.

Be honest, clear and prepared

If I need to terminate an employee, it is best to tell my employee honestly the reason why. Have a concise
answer formulated so I can be direct. While it is best to keep it short, try to avoid sounding harsh or distant.

Evaluate each of your goals individually

My success is dictated by much more than my performance as an individual. My employer may evaluate me
on the sales of the company, the morale of the office and even things like employee retention rates.
