Audre Lorde wrote; “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability
to recognize, respect and celebrate those differences.” Our world today gave rise
to a new generation. With the differences of everyone, discrimination between
individuals may arise. Anti-discrimination allows us to learn from each other's
differences and set aside any prejudice. Now let's talk more about discrimination
and anti-discrimination.

Discrimination may come in different forms and ways. It may be indirectly

or directly. A person who feels excluded and treated differently in a negative way
than the others is one form of discrimination. Discrimination in the workplace,
society, household, or through age, sex, and gender is one of the frequent cases.
In an article by Ladrido in 2018, 76% of females in the Philippines deal with
inequality and prejudice in the workplace, as reported. Women are paid 18-22%
percent less in the workplace, as stated by Audrey Pe in the same article. The
members of the LGBTQIA+ community get discriminated against for whom they
want to love, whom they are attracted to, and how they express themselves.
There is much gender-based violence reported around the world, and
unfortunately, it’s still happening today.

Let me share a little about my previous high school. The previous high
school I attended had two choices for senior high school. The other one is in the
main building with a more ‘private’ facility and tuition fee. The senior high school I
chose costs a lesser tuition fee and it’s in a different building. My cousin was
hesitant of me enrolling in that school and she warned me that they prioritize the
students enrolled in the other department. I brushed it off because I do not
believe that people can be like that. But, as soon as the school started, teachers
warned us that we’re not allowed to go to the other building’s library nor use their
canteen. Although we come from the same school, our departments’ schedules
of activities are different. One time, during a sports week, my friends told me that
they got yelled at by a teacher because they were eating in their canteen and
that we students from the other building should not be there.

It was a first-hand experience, I would say. Although it was just a little

thing, from not being allowed to use their library and canteen just because we’re
from the other building, I was confused at that time. I was blinded by the school
rules and I just brushed it off. But now, I would say it was a discriminating
experience.

Every day, we can fight against discrimination. Anti-discrimination

promotes learning. People are diverse in nature and we can all learn from each
other. Anti-discrimination in the workplace, society, organization, and any other
group promotes equal opportunity and respect the individual rights. It also
provides a harassment-free and violence-free environment for oppressed
individuals. We can all learn from each other’s differences and explore the
diversity of everyone while we practice respect and acceptance.

There are many oppressed individuals across many countries until today.
They are still fighting for themselves and their rights. There are still people who
are suffering from racial discrimination. There are still people who endure it every
day. We must learn how to respect the differences of everyone. Being different
does not make anyone less of a human.

With that in mind, let me conclude. Anti-discrimination promotes a learning

ground for all. It protects everyone from harassment and anything unjust and
unfair; by practicing anti-discrimination, we can learn from each other's
differences and practice acceptance and respect. So, let's all stand together and
put an end to discrimination. Now is our time to make this generation a better one
.
