The webinar titled Decision Making and Principles in Natural Resource Management
discusses how humans as consumers decide to use natural resources. The thing that was most
emphasized during the discussion in the webinar was the importance of the value of natural
resources that we still have today. For example, the ‘pokok belian’, the privileges it possesses
such as its durability and its robust structure as well as the expensive price cause people to
place a high value on it. Moreover, the tree is a rare species and difficult to find as it is only
found in the Borneo Islands and the Philippines causing it to be a protected species by the
authorities. When human beings place that natural resource as something valuable and
important, then various efforts will be made to appreciate and protect its existence. We can also
generate income for the economy from natural resources by producing and selling products
based on certain natural resources.

In this regard, we can see the various acts and laws introduced to protect our natural
resources. Because some natural resources in our country are threatened with extinction, the
authorities have gazetted some forest reserves as a measure to preserve and conserve these
natural resources. Today, many policies related to natural resources have been created to
preserve and maintain natural resources in our country. Every policy made plays a role in
safeguarding and protecting natural resources. With these policies, laws and laws we can
control and manage natural resources well so that there is no waste. This is because, if no policy
or act is enforced, some irresponsible parties will use natural resources without control.
Therefore, the policy made to protect natural resources will make resource management more
organized and controlled.

We must also preserve and preserve other species other than the endangered natural
resources. This is said so because, in Malaysia there are still many natural resources whose
benefits and uses are not yet known today. Perhaps today we do not know the importance of
natural resources, along with the advancement of technologies, we can conduct research to
study the benefits that can be obtained from natural resources. In my view, in terms of how to
sustain the number of species, we need to take early action to prevent certain species from
being destroyed or taken illegally by certain parties. Having natural resources such as trees is
an advantage for a country, especially in the Borneo Islands and the Philippines.

In my opinion, every natural resource that exists on this earth will experience depletion
or depletion at some point in the future. Here, human beings as consumers are forced to decide
whether to continue to use those natural resources until depleted or explore other natural

resources as an alternative to replace the nearly depleted ones. For example, in the next 30 or
50 years, the ‘pokok belian’ will still exist and in small amounts, will we cut it down for
industrial purposes or specific interests? Or are we going to keep it for the next 60 years? We
will make a huge profit if we sell the ‘pokok belian’ because it is a high value natural resource.
On the other hand, if we decide to continue to preserve and protect the ‘pokok belian’ species
then we can guarantee its existence for the future.
